Actually, since we're in Win11, that's "run from Terminal"! (ok, I did configure my Terminal to run cmd by default)
-
@dkf said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
@topspin It runs a terminal, a browser and an IDE () just fine. What else did you need?
QFT.
Slap Cygwin, a custom browser, gvim and Visual Studio on a Windows machine, and it approaches being usable in an emergency.
WSL2 is also approaching a state of almost usability.

So, context menus are now two staged where you have to click some not-a-hamburger option in the NEW context menu to get to the context menu? What the actual fuck?!
To disable the damn hamburger:
reg add HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32 /ve /d "" /f
Obvious and discoverable.

CosmosDB
The main thing behind Cosmos is that you can have the database at many places around the world, close to wherever your customer's sites are distributed. I would not want to set up such a distributed database myself.
Of course, if a one-place db is enough, you pay stupid amounts of money for a thing you do not need.

In the latest Steam hardware survey, Windows 11 usage rose by just over one percent to account for 47.78 percent of Windows systems surveyed. Windows 10 usage fell to 52.23 percent, a drop of half a percent.

Interesting, so Windows 10 and 11 combined account for 100.1% of all Windows versions?
-
@robo2 0.1% of all people are dual-booting Windows 10 + 11?

@topspin But hey, it solves the problem of context menus having
- Scan with Defender
- Turn off Bitlocker
- Change Bitlocker password
- Cast to Device
- Share
- Edit with Paint3D
- Give access
- Previous versions
- Include in Library
+ other shit items that nobody ever asked for
But the stuff in the top-level menu must be commonly used operations, right?

Reminds me when they introduced auto-adjusting expandable menus in office. Most "uncommon" selections would be hidden at first, but if you used them often enough they'd get auto promoted into the unexpanded menu. Good luck muscle memory!

I change my Bitlocker password every day. Twice on Wednesdays.

My guess is you need Windows 11 to run this:
Don't want it on my phone, what makes you think I want it on my desktop?
-
I know I've seen discussion on this, but I don't remember the answer (and MS is known to change the answer, anyway). What hoops do I need to jump through to set up a new machine without an MS account? Is it even possible? OEM Win11 Pro pre-installed.
-
@HardwareGeek go through the OOBE before connecting to the internet.
-
@loopback0 Ah. Since the only connection is WiFi, that's easy to just not give it access.
-
@HardwareGeek yeah, the step in the OOBE for connecting to wifi has a "I don't have a network connection" or similar button
-
@loopback0 That's how I did it in 10. I thought I remembered that MS had made it more difficult in 11, but if that still works, .
-
@HardwareGeek they might have for Home? That's exactly what I did on 11 Pro a couple of months ago though.
-
Apparently itβs changed since then, and the MS acct is harder than ever to skip.
-
Classic Windows.
As long as the Domain Join option is still under Sign In Options then that creates a local login too. You don't need to actually join a domain.edit: Setup for Work or School -> Sign-in Options -> Domain Join. Assuming that's not disappeared recently too.
-
@Arantor said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

That's what I thought I'd heard. I guess I'll find out when my new laptop gets here (0.5 β 3.5 hours).
-
@HardwareGeek I get on a group Discord chat with some college friends every Saturday and we discussed this a couple of weeks back. If the DDF can delay your laptop long enough I can ask what the solution was because frankly I forgot (the friend that brought it up sets up PCs as part of his job so he should remember).
-
@Zenith said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

Strictly speaking, that doesn't require the DDF. OOBE is not required to occur immediately after arrival; I want it to, of course, but I'm theoretically supposed to be doing stuff on my work laptop for another 5 hours, or so.
-
@HardwareGeek OK, I'll ask. My mom got a laptop for Christmas with Windows 11 and we couldn't find any way to skip the internet connection part. I vaguely recall that it was changed to something arcane like how you used to hold down F2 to get into BIOS.

Here are the notes I wrote for myself back when I first installed Windows 11 about a year ago:
At first 'Let's Connect You To A Network' screen:
- Press Shift-F10 to open command prompt
- Type: oobe\BypassNRO [enter]
At next 'Let's Connect You To A Network' screen:
- Press Shift-F10 to open command prompt
- Type: ipconfig /release
Click on 'I don't have Internet'
Click on 'Continue with limited setup'
-
If you're creating new install stick from ISO, Rufus has options to deal with this.
If you want to keep manufacturer's out-of-the-box
experienceexcrements, then the trick posted above by might work.
-
@Gern_Blaanston glad to see that Windows is still easy to install

seems to be optional, at least if one has not previously configured any network settings. I inadvertently skipped that step, and it let me continue with a local account anyway.

@TimeBandit Well it is, just bend over and close your eyes and it will be over in an instant!
-
There's a new exploit and it's potentially super dangerous
Impact: Remote Code Execution
Max Severity: Important
An unauthenticated attacker could send a malicious networking packet to an adjacent system that is employing a Wi-Fi networking adapter, which could enable remote code execution.
So update your Windows ASAP

Status: The GPU render process in Chrome crashed after closing a tab that was playing a WAV audio file. The other tab that was playing YouTube twitched because of that, and suddenly was about 20% louder unexpectedly (the volume slider on the player was already 100%).
Magical.

I'm glad to see that Microsoft are busy fixing bugs, seeing as I once again am struck by the opening color picker in Excel a second time a bit too fast after I have used it will result in dwm.exe crashing.

Windows 11 have boasted being able to control microphone in applications that use it with a common button, which would be a big improvement over having to fish out the Teams call windows somewhere if it effing worked, which it never did. It used to say that it can't control Teams and then it seems to have silently disappeared until yesterday.
After yesterday's update I started getting a new highlighted microphone icon on the status bar. Like:
It can be clicked, which turns it into:
Guess what does it do? You have three attempts.
- β¦
- β¦
- β¦
Jack shit, of course!. Yup, the microphone is still on. Both of them (the built-in and the one on the head-set I only plug in when I call). It's blatantly lying.
W. T. kurwa F.β½
-
The NSA asked MS to keep the microphone enabled at all times, even when it's supposed to be muted. MS just botched the "fake mute" implementation, as usual.
-
@Bulb Stupid external USB gamer mic with too many LEDs but a physical mute button FTW.
-
@cvi Doesn't help, though, if you're using a laptop with a built-in mic, and it's enabled.
-
@HardwareGeek It does, because only one mic is enabled at a time. Well, not against NSA, but against Teams it does.
-
Might be able to reinstall with a windows 11 iso and get the drivers via update.
*edit use linux in the comments. Good fucking luck with that one and a new surface. Maybe in a few months. I also liked the dd comment.

@DogsB But you have a backup?
