Get one with brown switches. Ducky 1087 is a good cheap entry.

I shall use my Logitech G15 V1 until it falls apart.

Just make sure that you learn how to type delicately enough so you don't bottom out the keys. These keyboards can still be quite loud otherwise.

Or get some rubber dampeners

@MrL Sadly, AFAIK nobody makes an ergonomic keyboard with mechanical switches. (Also, numpad is an absolute must.) I love my MS 4000 (which does not have mechanical switches), but sadly MS does not make it any more, and ones that dealers still have in stock go for 10x MSRP. I needed a new ergo keyboard for working from home, and the best I could find was a Kensington, but don't like it; it's essentially a laptop keyboard but with better hand position. :(

There a few custom, niche, expensive, obscure, and nearly impractical to buy options in the list at the bottom of the page here. Unfortunately, mechanical ergonomic keyboards aren't a big enough market.

I've been through so many MS 4000 (I'm a klutz). I found a waterproof ergo and then when that broke, they stopped making them.

Not sure if I actually have. I've been using the MS keyboards for so long now...

Thanks. After just a quick skim through the list, the Cloud9 looks pretty good (except for the $*@#&$! RGB backlighting), and it's not too absurdly overpriced.

3 monitors are obvious, right?
Assuming you mean per-computer - I tried that. Kept losing things.
That said, I have 4 on my desk now. Ok, technically 3 + laptop. This system (2 22" [2K and 4K]) and work (laptop + 27"[4K]). Sigh, speaking of which, I need to get back to...

I bought my last one from MS last March. If I remember, I never did find a direct link, but some magic googling brought me to an MS page I could order it from. For the regular price!

@dcon That's not quite the same as the 10(?)-year old one I have. It's missing some keys that I don't really care about, but the palm/wrist support doesn't look like the same position, and the keys themselves look less well-designed. Better than my Kensington, but not as good as my old 4000. Nevertheless, I've bookmarked it for the next time I'm in the market for a keyboard.
-
@HardwareGeek Oh, you're right. I didn't look too closely... (since the originating google link had "4000" prominently in the caption)

They're not all obnoxiously loud. I have one which has "Silent" switches and while they're obviously not actually silent they sure are relatively quiet and aren't any louder under normal typing than the other membrane keyboards I have.
It's also possible to buy little O-rings that go under the keycaps and dampen some of the racket on the noisier ones.TBH I don't really see the fuss over typing on mechanical keyboards and never have. I have a mechanical keyboard because I wanted other features and it happened to be mechanical.
If there hadn't been a quieter option I might not have got it though.

If there hadn't been a quieter option I might not have got it though. It's the 'feel' while typing. Rubber dome feels, well, ugly.
But I think the difference is not apparent if you bottom out the keys.I also type much faster on mechanical.

@Karla I've never used one, but I think we can all agree that mechanical keyboards are in general a Good Thing™. (Whatever happened to Martha Stewart?)
Get your pitchforks ready, for I have never been a fan of mechanical keyboards.
My son has one, and I am not a fan of it. It has 3 problems:
- Loud
- No numpad
- Too many LEDs. (At least it's constant color, or maybe it's capable of multi-color and he is sane enough (?!? never thought I'd say that) to have configured it for constant color, not ever-changing RGB lighting. That would call for the application of a large hammer.)
If one could get the feel of a mechanical keyboard without the sound, that would be ideal.
Sounds like you need to look into the different switch types. I recommend Cherry Red.

3 for my main rig. Two of them are connected to docking station for when I work.
Everything else is single screen or no screen.

Cloud 9 has mechanical switched (pick between three different types when you order), fully split layout, and a numpad. If you want, you can even turn off the RGB back lighting.
EDIT: Based on reading more of the thread, I've added emphasis to a point that seems to be important to @HardwareGeek.

These are custom cables with special pins that will only work for the Cloud Nine Keyboards.
Note: A standard USB-C cable will not work you will need one of these cables if you want to spread your keyboard out farther.Fuck you, niners, and fuck the cloud you fucked in on.

I don't disagree. I wouldn't have bought that one, even if it was super cheap. (It might or might not have been; budget was definitely an issue when he was building his rig, but also gaming.)

How far apart do you need the two halves? I'm betting part of the reason the price is so high is because of low demand.

It allows you to mount each half on a chair arm? So you can then totally destroy things (and have to buy them again) when you get up quickly and forget you're wired in.

I've got one of these and it being a fairly low demand item + being built in the EU is definitely visible in the price.
If only it didn't have the ridiculous "Ultimate Hacking Keyboard" name...

The UHK palm rest belongs to a class of its own. It's made of natural beech wood, which is then machined, pickled, lacquered, and finally fixated to a powder-coated steel plate. It offers a unique combination of warmth, class, and durability.
