I saw this at a bookshop once. I might have commented on it.
Regardless, I can certainly comment now that the depiction of the pterosaur on the front cover is unfortunately deficient.

The marvel is not the depth of the bear's ennui, but that the bear has an existential crisis at all.
Where's his tie?

I don't think that works in Canada. You'd get entwilightened, that probably sounds different.

It'll tell you if you have "confirm before closing multiple tabs" set and try and close the window(s).
Yes, but I'd have to do that for each window, and add the number of tabs myself. If I attempt to exit Firefox entirely, it just says
Yes, I think you should close Windows 98 and upgrade to something more modern.

My Smart Home is Stupid
The Io thread is .
It's fascinating to see the guy whining that having one physical thermostat in each room with analogue technology was so awfully bad (because, uh, just trust him, it was bad), and instead replaced them by stuff that is so great because it doesn't the cloud -- well, except to set it up. And that requires countless hacks and plugins and what not. And a whole actual physical server rack in his basement which is the thing that is actually heating his home. And then he marvels at how local connections (without going through the cloud) are so great because you click a button and boom instantly the corresponding circuit gets triggered, and it'll work even if there is a network outage. Like, you know, these old thermostats that were sooooo bad that you had to rip them out.
In a sense, that's perfectly fitting for this thread, because I can think of a quite a few people here who love nothing more than over-complicating stuff just for the sake of using a new gizmo, and who end up reinventing far simpler and far more efficient systems, but worse.

He really wants to control the temperatures from his smartphone, and you can't do that with an analogue thermostat. I mean, you can, but the setup would be even more WTF.
He's a tech nerd. A dumb tech nerd with enough money to actually realize his dumb fantasies. The world needs people like him. Not too many, the fewer the better, but we need at least one. Preferably one with access to professional film crew so we can watch the consequences of his bad decisions in their full glory. He's just perfect for this.

Fair point. He's making a great point about smart homes. Maybe not the point he thinks (I have no idea where his beef lies), and certainly not the point smart home sellers would like, but a great point nonetheless.

He has all kinds of stuff in that basement server rack, home automation is only a small part of it. The beefy stuff in there is I think his own (separate from his company) large storage system and one or more gaming rigs (he has remote play set up to avoid fan noise apparently). Said another way, he'd still have the basement server rack even if he didn't do home automation.

Yes, I believe the latest science indicates he would have been wearing a much more ornate, brightly coloured turban

@DogsB what kind of poem is that? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to literature, but I can't find any rhyme or meter to it.

That's fine. We'll slap an avant-garde sticker onto it and it'll sell.
