@Mason_Wheeler ? Asking to go online after calling the local police?
What if they just stole my only means of going online?
I know increasingly this equals "phone", but that's certainly not the case for me at least.
-
@Zecc It makes sense to try and redirect people online for low-urgency issues (assuming this is when calling some non-urgent number!), but of course the is to not allow bypassing that.
Something similar (though in the end I could bypass it, thankfully) happened to me recently. I came home one evening to a power cut, and since that sometimes happens, and it was summer already so plenty of light, I didn't care too much. Yet when it stayed out for too long I started to wonder and went to have a look at neighbours, and it turned out it was my house only.
I had already checked my fuse box and other obvious things, so I called the 24h emergency number for my provider, where the robot voice redirected me to a website which basically couldn't find anything (I think the site only checks if there is a known incident in my area, nothing specific to my house). I called again and had to wait through a few sterner and sterner robot voice messages about only staying on the line if it really, truly was an emergency, nay, a serious emergency (such as a live line on the ground). I was starting to wonder if that really was the number to call for my not really that serious emergency (I mean, I had no power, but there wasn't anything more serious than that) when I finally got through. The support technician though didn't comment in any way on my call and dispatched someone immediately, so clearly it was OK to call them. But they tried very hard to dissuade me.
(the technician found out that ants had eaten through the starch-based insulation of wires in the meter, frying the whole thing in a weird way (it thought, showed and reported that it was still working, but it obviously wasn't), and simply changed it)

starch-based insulation of wires
-
@Mason_Wheeler You'd think so, wouldn't you? And yet...
(first random result for a vaguely relevant search, though I picked it for the obvious downside of it all)
-
@remi From the linked article:
Forum solutions are frequently just as elaborate, often including plots to kill the varmints before they can get comfortable inside the engine bay. Our favorite reoccurring recommendation involves coating every single centimeter of wiring with hot sauce on a weekly basis.
Or you could just get a cat...

@boomzilla I am absolutely in this post.
-
@boomzilla It's unfortunate that WDTWTF doesn't have badges anymore. Otherwise you could mention them on your linkedin (et al.) profile, to show how important you are.
-
@cvi I'm almost tempted to try to work out how to embed the Badger video in my profile there, but that would involve using LinkedIn so no, I won't.

@LaoC I've not planned that far ahead for something that will definitely prevent me from doing.
