@BernieTheBernie when I was a kid I found it very amusing that Chile looks like a chilli pepper.

Heard on a rerun of "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" from 1972 the other night:
"Hungary briefly severed ties with the Soviet Union today and instead aligned itself with the Chinese. However, an hour later it was Hungary again."

Finally the Midwest gets a beach!

No thanks.
-
@loopback0 With a little rise of the sea level, Florida just will be washed away anyway.
-
@loopback0 I know, right? They went and completely ignored the Korean Peninsula like that.

@DogsB SHARKNADO WAS REAL

@DogsB said in Fun with maps:
That got me thinking: do those landlocked states have aquariums with sharks in them?
And it turns out that, yes, that is the explanation
In 2006, at least 12 people at Kentucky's Newport Aquarium were bitten by sharks while at an exhibit that allows visitors to touch the animals
(…)
Missouri's lone attack also occurred in captivity — in 1996, when a couple was performing at the St. Louis Boat and Sports Show. Kathi Peters, who was at the show with her husband, Marco, put her hand in a 9,000-gallon tank with six nurse sharks. She suffered from five puncture wounds to her hand, according to the Global Shark Attack File.

Used to be a shrimp farm in Gila Bend, Arizona. For those who didn't want to go all the way to Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco).

The nurse sharks were just trying to draw blood.

@boomzilla I think Switzerland should be only partially green though; I suppose the French- and Italian-speaking Swiss don't have that words when the other lands using those languages don't.
-
@Bulb I also doubt the Flemish have voetvingers.

Noooo! Languages have got to exactly follow national geographic boundaries!!!
-
@Bulb: there is a word for toe in French: orteil.
-
@dkf
We are trying to rectify that for at least 100 years
-
@boomzilla And now add a map for languages which have a word for
glove
vs. languages which useshoe for hand
(e.g. ).

I’m already anticipating Brussels ending up like a giant Baarle-Hertog but at individual apartment level.

French also doesn't have words for 70, 80, or 90, instead using sixty-ten, four-twenty, and four-twenty-ten respectively.
-
@PleegWat In France and its former colonies, anyway. Other places where French is spoken as a local language may vary, and not all in the same way.

Talking about her can get kinda , so let's just say she should have kept her focus on the climate debate.

@Atazhaia That was indeed the general opinion in the newspaper this morning.

After all, as the proverb goes, God created the heavens and the earth, but he did not create The Netherlands.

@topspin "Wouldn't it be nice if these large lakes threatening nearby villages/cities were just farmland instead."
Dutch reclamations were not created by raising the land. They were created by lowering the water.
We built dikes and waterways around the lakes, and used windmills to pump all the water from the lake to the sea. Thus the lakebed fell dry-ish. Add more ditches and waterways, leave part of the windmills in place to pump out rainwater and seepage. Other windmills were disassembled and reused elsewhere.
