Where should I buy a chair?
-
It's likely, no matter what I choose for a job, that I'll be working remotely for a while.
My current chair (a wooden kitchen chair) just won't cut it. But I'm not really willing to drop $1k on a chair either.
Anyone got a source of computer chairs they prefer? Preferably with online ordering? Bonus points if they're suitable for...larger...people.
-
@Benjamin-Hall For the price, the Fully is pretty nice. The only thing I didn't realize was the tilt functionality is the back only. (I like when tilt is back+seat.) Also, the fabric on the seat makes my Purple seat cushion slide a lot.
-
I got this one for my brother ~1month ago:
He doesn't have much time with it, but so far it has served him well.
-
I’ve had one of these for nearly 3 years and it shows minimal wear and still provides good back support when I remember not to slouch in it.

Given that the $100-150 “top end” Office Depot faux leather chairs were good for a max of 2 years before they were down multiple wheels and the “leather” covering, I’ve been extremely satisfied with the value. I’m given to understand you can get individual replacement parts for these if needed, but I have no experience to speak to that.
-
I have one of these which is pretty comfortable, and can be adjusted in many ways. It's pretty sturdy and well-made.
-
@loopback0 seems UK/EU only though...I'd hate to pay shipping on that.
-
@Benjamin-Hall There do seem to be US sellers. Amazon, Newegg, etc.
-
@loopback0 All I can find are the $500 Fallout branded chairs. And that's a no.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Looks like NewEgg are out of stock but...
-
@Benjamin-Hall My choice was definitely "opinionated" (i.e., not for everyone), so I can't necessarily recommend it. But as a fat person, I really like my "bungie chair". I got mine at Staples (I think) in like 2006. Mine is still in awesome shape. They sell them "everywhere", just search for bungee chair for a look.
-
@Benjamin-Hall I've had this chair in my home office for about two years:
Was only using it occasionally pre-pandemic, but having spent 8 hours a day in it the last few months, it still seems to do the job.
They say supported weight is 350 pounds, but it's held up fine so far even though I'm closer to 400.

https://www.dxracer.com/us/en-us/product/1/gaming-chairs/formula-and-racing-series/oh-rv131-nb/I think I have a very similar (older) model to this one (with the fabric instead of fake leather):
https://www.dxracer.com/us/en-us/product/1/gaming-chairs/formula-and-racing-series/oh-fd01-nr/
I bought it probably 7-8 years ago and I'm still using it (more now than before). Some of the parts are getting a bit worn, but it's still comfy. Got it from a 3rd party retailer. Don't know about US ones, but the brand is somewhat common these days, so you might be able to find one elsewhere than their online shop (which seems somewhat sold out).
-
This is not a chair, despite what the URL says. And it was linked from a brand store within Amazon.

As a counterpoint, I'm roughly half that weight and I bought that exact same chair about two years ago and it developed a lean to the point that it got demoted to my electronics area about a year ago. So it lasted ~1 year.
To each their own. I tend to lean in my chairs. So YMMV.
That being said, I'm over two years into a Respawn chair from Amazon and no issues so far. I'm ~200lbs, pretty muscular for a nerd and I find them super comfy. In fact I've bought a few more of them. Even my wife gave me shit for the aesthetics of it but after sitting in it a few times she gave that up and I had to order one for her office before the world caught fire.
Even Lil'Dude commandeers them when he gets the chance, so apparently it works for a wide variety of sizes.
-
I know you said you didn't want to spend $1000, but I'd definitely recommend to not cheap out!
We have dozens of these in the office, and have had them for at least 10 years. I used it while i was quite fat, and actually, still have the same one now that I'm half the man i used to be.
It seems hard to justify (its a cheap aeron, however), but oh man did they make a difference. We used to have cheap chairs ($200 grade?), and after switching, that's when you really notice it. Hard to describe.
Since I started working out of the Japan office full-time, I forgot about how uncomfortable a normal chair was. Again, didn't really realize it until after i switched. I bought one of these for Japan, and holy crap each day was better.
-
@apapadimoulis at least as posted, there are two problems with that chair. First, a weight limit of 250. I'm...a bit above that and have been consistently since early college. Second, it doesn't list the price. Which means there's no way I can afford it. Especially since I'm going to have to pay move in costs wherever I end up, plus get a new phone real soon.
-
@Benjamin-Hall oh I had no idea... I was quite a bit above that for a while, and it seems to have been okay...
You could probably find on Amazon, but it's gonna be $600-700ish, depending. It's only worth it if you are indefinitely doing 8hours/5days week. I bought one in Japan only once that became my office schedule; otherwise the mid-grade ($300?) was fine.
-
@apapadimoulis I've just destroyed chairs quickly before. It's the gas cylinder that always goes first, and the "fits all brands" replacements... Don't.

I recently got this for ~$200
It does the job, but I was a bit disappointed in the range of adjustments. I do like being able to put up the armrests.

I've tried a gaming chair, they hurt my back and hip.

@Benjamin-Hall i bought a second hand from an office-clearance reseller. They had good professional office chairs that originally cost €800 for around €200 (with new cloth on the seats). Me and my wife tested about 10 different models before settling on a fully adjustable chair which serves us well since lockdown began. Maybe there are similar shops in your neighborhood?
We are both under 80kg, so ability to adjust was more important the seat being heavy duty. Still I would recommend trying before you buy, you'll be sitting on it for too much anyway, it better be good.

I am literally this:
Used to be a scrawny nerd, have since turned into a skinny-fat nerd. Still not enough muscles to support my body and a terrible posture acquired by laziness.
Even Lil'Dude commandeers them when he gets the chance
-
@topspin Yeah. Count me into the "weak + horrible horrible posture" group.
I knew a kid in high school who we thought had replaced his spine with a metal rod. Kid couldn't slouch if his life depended on it. At the time, it was weird. But now I wish I were like that. But not enough to actually, you know, fix my posture. is a central fact of my life.

Another common cause: Sitting down with your wallet in your back pocket.

Thankfully I don’t carry anything in my back pockets. At least my posture is only fucked up in the front-back direction, not sideways too.

@Benjamin-Hall said in Where should I buy a chair?:
I've just destroyed chairs quickly before. It's the gas cylinder that always goes first
I had one chair break where the gas cylinder meets the roller bottom. It was that socket in the chair base that broke. I was sitting at my desk working and there was a very loud POP and I felt myself drop just a little bit. I got up and everything seemed fine at first so I sat back down. Behind my desk there is a table that I will sometimes work from or lay out papers, or just generally it is a gravity well for clutter. Well I went to spin around and roll over to it and when I did screech. The bottom of the gas cylinder was rubbing the tile and then I saw where it had broken.
I ended up epoxying the ram in place and reinforcing it so it was still functional and that chair got demoted to my electronics area and was subsequently replaced via another demotion of the chair I recently mentioned.
-
@topspin said in Where should I buy a chair?:
I am literally this:
#MeToo, also on the terrible posture and upvoted for Archer reference.
-
@PleegWat said in Where should I buy a chair?:

That may be where I got it from. I've since switched to a front pocket wallet/cell phone case. But the habit remains.
-
@Polygeekery in my case, it's always that the cylinder loses its umph and slides down/won't stay up.
INB4 OOC thread.

This is my current chair:
I bought it in 2016. I had a back and a mechanism / cylinder die but they replaced them both at no charge. I really like the chair, although the padding leaves a bit to be desired, which is why I recently bought a purple seat cushion, which is great.
This chair gets a ton of use in our house. Mostly by me. I've been up towards 315lbs at times (a bit less now). Very happy with the purchase.
-
So I ended up ordering this one:
along with a dual-monitor VESA mount for my monitors (because getting them the right height otherwise is a pain in the butt).
-
@Benjamin-Hall if you don't already have one, I'd recommend getting a plastic chair mat so you don't destroy your floor rolling around in the chair.
-
@PleegWat said in Where should I buy a chair?:

I keep seeing and hearing this, but I don't understand why. Do most people sit on their wallets? When I sit down, the back pocket is high enough that a wallet doesn't affect how I'm sitting.
-
@djls45 I've always kept my wallet in my front pocket, so I have no practical experience, but it may depend on the exact layout of your pants.

I am literally this:
I have a RealSpace big and tall executive chair that's held up really well but does not recline at all so I end up sitting like that too.
(Not that I really fit the "big and tall" part but it's really hard to find microfiber chairs for some reason. Everything seems to be either rough canvas, low quality fake vinyl, or whatever trampolines are made of.)
-
@PleegWat My back used to hurt for years (over a decade ago).
It went away the day I got a new car.My back hates the standard Volkswagen seats.

I could not agree more.
My chair is much more comfortable and durable than most office chairs I encountered later on other jobs. No back ache when using it.
I got it from my employer when I needed to do a project from home. That was 23 years ago.
With near-daily use, the chair is still looking almost new.
I believe it was somewhere in the 600 dollar range in 1997.
-
This is the model my company uses.
I've seen the same brand chairs in a top music recording studio I've been to. I think they're well loved around here.
-
@marczellm Maybe it's just the specific model, but the Aeron chairs our office had aren't comfortable for me - probably because my butt's too wide.
