this is actually very mean. it is exploiting their built-in default HOLY SHIT THAT'S A SNAKE GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE SNAKE reaction and can lead to them becoming stressed.

Cat status: chasing her tail.
She doesn't do it like a dog, round and round. She stalks it. She sits there staring over her shoulder, watching her own tail twitch with that intent expression, and then she pounces. On her own tail. If she catches it, she traps it with her foot and then licks it.
It's equal parts hilarious, alarming, adorable, and just plain weird. Should I worry?
I didn't get a picture. She's very good at stopping whatever she was doing when the camera comes out.
-
@CarrieVS
Mine does that too, occasionally. She usually licks her tail whenever she did something clumsy, though, like miscalculate a jump or slip on something. No idea why, but it's cute.

Not at all. Every cat I've ever had has done that.

I used to have two from the same nest (one died last year). They would play whack-a-paw from two sides of an open door.

Hm, right. Is that called a litter in English or is that just dogs?
-
Yes. Cats and dogs come from litters. Nests refer to the homes of birds... and rats for some reason? (Colloquially, homes of people as well.)
-
@PleegWat It's generally litter for live-bearing mammals, which would include cats. We usually say clutch or brood for egg-laying non-mammals. I must confess I don't know for sure what the term is for egg-laying mammals or live-bearing non-mammals.
Cats will make nests in which to give birth to their litters though. The term nest can be used for many creatures besides birds.

I'm going to say "burrow".

It's OK, they're protesters.

They’re 6 feet apart (scaled to cat dimensions), instead of lying atop each other.

Have you ever tried to put a mask on a cat?

It's a lot easier if you put a vest on them first....

It's also easier if you wear heavy gloves. Masonry gauntlets or something like that. Like that, you keep most of your fingers mostly intact…

Status: Checking out the new neighbors
-
@El_Heffe tomorrow: checking in the neighbors.
Fake edit: The Free Dictionary has turned this post into another unintended Schródinger joke.
check in
- To officially confirm one's arrival at a certain place where one is expected, such as a hotel.
- To officially record someone's or something's arrival at a certain place. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "check" and "in."
- To communicate with someone at a certain interval in time so as to provide or ask about an update in status or otherwise simply talk.
- To die.

Cat status: either she's gotten more determined or she's been working out. I've always been able to leave the window open an inch and I've seen her try to push her way out and not be able to move it. Today...
Managed to put a stop to the unauthorised adventure when she was facing off with another neighbourhood mog, which is of course the last thing I want while she's not fully vaccinated, and apparently she was pleased to have backup, so I was able to get close and pick her up. Then had to carry her approximately three times as far as she's willing to be held for, and was extremely hissed at.
I think I'm going to have to relax restrictions. Three more weeks of lockdown is going to drive at least one of us mad. She's been getting more and more frustrated lately, but she was so chilled out and relaxed when she was back inside, in spite of the indignity of being carried back home, that I just don't think the small risk is worth it. Not going to let her out freely until she's fully vaccinated, but I'm going to start some supervised outside time before her dinner (in theory, she'll be hungry enough to come back in. But it probably won't go to plan.)

Cat status: grounded, after she did a runner and stayed out for over two hours, completely out of sight, worrying me sick. (Not that I'll worry about her being out for two hours once she's had all her jabs and has a catflap to get back in and it wasn't supposed to be quarter of an hour's outside playtime near the back garden. But I was worried sick.)
Also getting zero sympathy next time she eats all her dry food by 11am and begs all day, because if she was really as hungry as she spent most of today pretending, she'd have come home when I waved her full bowl at her.

Neighbour Cat Status : Scared the unholy hell out of me when it scampered in the window and sat on me in the middle of the night. I haven't seen it since.

@DogsB lol. I'm guessing it was doing it on a dare.
