Random Thought of the Day
-
I seem to remember we had a topic something like, Random Thoughts, but I can't seem to find it.
Anyway, my random thought of the day is that it would be interesting to have a program that analyzed Twitter posts (and what they were replying to) of a user and gave an estimate of their intelligence. It would have to be politically neutral, and it would be important to compare the tweet to what it was replying to to see if it fit.

It's titled precisely the same, in the same category, less than a page down.
Did you even try???

Yes, I did. I even did a search, and it did not come up in the first page.

Now I'll have to have as much as two random thoughts per day. I'm having a thought it may be too much thoughts, and I'm not sure I can handle the thinking.

Handles are pretty cheap to hold on to. Just make sure you free them once you're done!

That's the easy way.

When using a microwave, you can set up to 1 minute and 39 seconds using only seconds (ex.: 99)

Yes, I almost always select times based on repeated digits. This was taught to me by a programmer before I started programming. I said that I was probably one of the few people in the building who would appreciate that. Of course, the amount of time I will save in my whole life by that trick is probably less than it's taking me to write this reply.

I like to imagine that I'm increasing the lifespan of the zero spot on the key pad.

It's not about the time saved, it's about the effort not done

I just use the "add 30 seconds" button. I don't even have to press start!

What happened to pure mad science? Every mad scientist these days has some axe to grind and it has nothing to do with projectile vomiting into the eye of God. Eco-mad-scientist may as well drop the mad, it's not properly mad, just angry. Socio-mad-scientist isn't even real mad science. At peak investment, the majority of mad scientists were doing pure mad research. Now, mad science is in the hands of the last of the surviving generation, and nothing is filling in the attrition. Students aren't learning that a callous disregard for life, morality, and the apparent laws of causality isn't an end in itself - it's a practice. Who's going to stuff the gerbils of tomorrow?

@Gribnit said in Random Thought of the Day:

You just don't meet that many mad social scientists.
-
@Gribnit Maybe the pure mad scientists aren't telling anyone what they're working on?

The pure mad scientists tell people what they're working on, but the applied mad scientists aren't listening because they have gerbils to stuff.

Want to feel old?
Elián Gonzalez is 27 years old.
Jessica McClure (aka "Baby Jessica", the girl who fell down a well) is 35 and has two kids of her own.
Two and a half weeks from now, JonBenét Ramsay would have celebrated her 31st birthday.

Considering that Ariel is a masculine name...

I feel the same as before. Excel was written closer to your birth, than to now. If you need to feel young again.

No. And if I did, I don't need your help.

And for extra bonus points, all but Baby Jessica are less than half my age. Thanks so much; just what I needed this morning.

Random thought:
We took the kids to an amusement park today. The world's falling down around us, but at least the amusement parks are open, so I don't need to break the news to the kids yet.
Anyways, I'm sitting in a rollercoaster that's being hauled up the first hill by the classic chain arrangement. The track is made out of wood, and the structure is only some 40m high. The park has more modern ones too, but the wooden one is a gimmick.
The car takes a while getting hauled up, and as I'm listening to the safety clacker, I start wondering: Just how many tonnes does that chain weigh?
-
@acrow said in Random Thought of the Day:

It's more rewarding to ask these questions of the other people in line. "Does that look like dry rot?" is a special bonus option for wooden coasters.
-
@Gribnit I did consider smuggling an empty plastic bottle onto one of the coasters for making a crack noise just before the acceleration starts. But I don't want to cause any actual heart attacks. Or be banned from the park.

The Jetsons' building janitor is Henry Orbit. Judy Jetson attends Orbit High School. Wonder if Henry's related to whoever the school is named after.

(Disclaimer: it's about an hour past midnight here, so this is technically a random thought of the day for yesterday.)
September 16th is the actual Mexican day of independence. Not that Cinco de Mayo thing that's actually a very minor observance in Mexico proper.
And yet, I didn't see a single deal on tacos or anything on the anniversary of Mexico's actual independence. Not one, even mentioned in passing.
(We now anxiously look forward to seeing if anyone talks like a pirate on Sunday.)

What is the most common element in the human body?
Oxygen.
What is the most common element in the earth's atmospher?
Nitrogen.
What is the most common element in the earth's crust?
Oxygen.
What is the most common element in the earth's core?
Iron.
What is the most common element in the universe?
Hydrogen.
What is the most common element in the internet?
I had to do a llittle work to get an answer I could believe to this one. Googled the names of every element in the periodic table and made a list of the number of hits, then sorted the list. Turns out the most common element in the internet is gold.
(I still have the full list of elements sorted in rank order if anyone's interested. Decided it really wouldn't skew the results too much if I accepted things like "lead" meaning what the person at the front of a parade does, "tin" for the editor, or "krypton" for Superman's home planet.)

Actually (1) there is no such thread, and (2) I defy anyone to find a better example of a "random thought" than the one that triggered this project, so, the very definition of on-topic.
