It's really not any more complicated that that.Well, it wasn't. Obviously it has been made way more complicated.

You should try being a lot less easy to mock. Just a thought.

or if not that, then stop giving such good reaction when mocked. if you ignored it it would quickly become boring and would stop on its own.
and then the problem would be solved!

@levicki said in Lime scooters:
Finally, why should I put in extra work to explain every acronym
Because you want to communicate meaningful information (assuming you do want to communicate, which is not always apparent). And it is certainly not necessary to define every acronym, only non-obvious ones. Nobody here would expect you to define CPU, RAM, TCP/IP, CEO, or dozens of other common computer and business acronyms we all use every day. But something like DAW is more music-related than computer-related; yes, it is a type of program, but the people who use that type of program are musicians, not IT professionals, 90+% of whom will never encounter the term.
when you can Google it if you want to know what it means,
Google doesn't always return helpful results. I still don't know what CISOs means in the context of tourist attractions, because all the results I saw were for Chief Information Security Officers.
and ask for clarification only if it is ambiguous
So 20 people are supposed to spend a few minutes of googling and guessing various extra search words trying to get sensible results to save you a few seconds to type something you already know. Are you really that arrogant and self-centered?

@boomzilla said in Lime scooters:
@levicki said in Lime scooters:
People asking about DAW where whining.
No one was whining, you twit. At worst they were mocking.
Around here, mocking is a sign of endearment. Well, sometimes.

As close as we misanthropists (and misvulpinists) get.
-
@levicki said in Lime scooters:
So they got mocked right back for being ignorant
While technically they were indeed ignorant, they were ignorant of something they could not reasonably have been expected to know. Rather than mocking them, educating them would have been more effective, more friendly, and saved us all this whole long discussion.
-
A lot of those aren't even acronyms
-
@levicki said in Lime scooters:
Yes, because people see only other people's faults all the time, never their own.

Well, it's a better use than unit testing

re you really that arrogant and self-centered?
Based on imperical evidence provided here and elsewhere I have reason to believe the correct answer is:
I would apologize for that, but..... I'm not going to.

NONE OF THIS IS ABOUT LIME SCOOTERS!
-
@levicki said in Lime scooters:
When you are reading a book or watching a movie and encounter an unfamiliar term do you get mad at the writers as well for not explaining it,
It really depends on how it is handled in the material. There are certainly instances where they have failed to provide enough information for me to grasp what they meant, so yeah, in those cases it can be off putting.
Was reading a collection of short stories recently and that was a consistent problem in the work. The constant struggle of trying to figure out what they meant detracted from many of the stories.
In an entertainment setting, you never want to lose your audience, so things like unfamiliar terms are not exactly ideal. Now obviously, you don't need to say what the SCIF is in season 8 of NCIS, by now anyone who cares about the show understands what it is, but in the first season they explained what it was.
Two questions:
Am I supposed to assume that out of 20 people 20 won't know what I am talking about? Is it really that bad?My general assumption is that most acronyms are only known by people in that area. I try and expand on any acronyms at least once per conversation if I think there are people from a different area in that conversation.
As you probably noticed I do define things and use abbr tag often when I post from the comfort of my PC keyboard, but are all of you really that arrogant and self-centered to expect me to type long acronym definitions even when posting from a phone? Really?
Uh, how would any of us know what device you are posting from when you post?
You know what would have also saved us from all this whole long discussion?
Asking nicely instead of mocking me. It's really that simple.
I thought a staple of this forum was being and arrogant 's is the response really that surprising?

Yes. You're like a slightly less mercury-addled version of @Gribnit.

There are shortcuts at the top of the compose box. I used them here when posting from mobile.

Given the context, I'm guessing it is some sort of Canadian compact disk images...

Uh? I was just under the impression it was a misspelling of CISCO.

You mean, other than by the lack of any special formatting such as bold and italic, lack of quotes in my replies, no hyperlinks, no images, and no tag? Yeah, it's really hard to tell.
Oh, so I am suppose to use your lack of editing as the indicator that you are on mobile or not? spare me.
-
@levicki said in Lime scooters:
Yeah, it's really hard to tell.
Yeah, it really is.
Lots of people on mobile do those. Lots of people on desktops don't do those. See? No special formatting. (But then for me, it's an easy guess - I never post (or read) from mobile - but you knew that, right?)
-
@levicki said in Lime scooters:
You could also use the lack of explanations for acronyms as the indicator that I am on mobile.
Or you (like myself) are a lazy fuck and rarely do any formating, hard to tell the difference from here.
On a more serious note, you people are such intolerant hard-asses. You expect from others what you probably would never do yourself, and if I criticized you for the same thing (and I am sure I could find plenty of examples around here), you would say that I am the one who's arrogant and self-centered for expecting you to provide explanations.
In other words, your criticism would be much better taken if you weren't such a sad bunch of hypocrites.
Yeah, as the CISCO picks above clearly demonstrate.

-
@TimeBandit Or this:
-
@dcon said in Lime scooters:
Lots of people on mobile do those.
I do most (currently, due to completely broken hotel WiFi, all) of my posting from mobile, and yet I somehow manage to quote, format, use
abbr
tags, and even post meme images. Images are a PITA because I can't copy them to the clipboard, and copying stuff from other websites (Wikipedia, news, other research) is a PITA because editor closes when switching tabs, and some formatting is a minor PITA because switching keyboard modes, but I do it anyway because I want to communicate clearly.
-
@levicki said in Lime scooters:
It is if you are not observant, but then you should not to be so quick to judge people who are only occasionally less verbose than usual.
There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 (mods/admins, please correct me if the number is significantly inaccurate) active posters here, and although a few have rather distinctive writing styles, I don't think it is reasonable to expect anyone to memorize everyone's usual style and notice occasional deviations.
