@anotherusername Guinness or Ripley?

@anotherusername said in Lime scooters:
@boomzilla It was close enough for the record books, anyway.
That close is plenty far enough away from my lawn that won't get in trouble, though.

Bird could try to punish its customers for doing this, but how is it in their best interest to do so? There's nothing to incentivize them to punish their own paying customers, unless it's to avoid being punished themselves for something that isn't their fault and which they couldn't reasonably have prevented.
Like... people leaving their scooters in private property?

Yes?
They don't have to go to a lot of extra effort to make sure that their users follow the laws. Their users should do that all by themselves. There's certainly no incentive for the users to not follow the laws -- unless that's to go and retrieve a scooter that someone else already ditched on private property. And at that point, frankly, I don't know what else they should do.
It's worth pointing out here that inadvertent trespass is generally not a crime. Trespassing only becomes illegal if you trespass for the purposes of committing another crime, or, if you've been personally informed that the property owner doesn't want you trespassing there (a "no trespassing" sign is sufficient notice of this in some jurisdictions... but not necessarily in all of them), and you refuse to heed their wishes and trespass anyway.
I seriously doubt that either leaving a scooter on what might be private property adjacent to public property, or entering that private property even if you knew to be private property to retrieve a scooter that had been left there by someone else, would be criminal trespassing. The scooter obviously belongs to Bird, not the property owner, so there's no criminal intent in walking onto someone's lawn to grab it. You should, of course, assume that you don't have permission to drop it off there, but even then I don't think there would be criminal intent.

Fucking wankers. I bet they trip over the cracks in sidewalks too, eh?

@boomzilla Perfect opportunity for the property owner to take the scooters, strip them for valuable parts, and toss the rest in the bin. The batteries and motor ought to be worth at least a little bit.

@Carnage said in Lime scooters:
Perfect opportunity for the property owner to take the scooters, strip them for valuable parts, and toss the rest in the bin.
That'd be great… up until the scooter owner sues them for destruction of their scooter (a pretty easy case to win) and the property owner has to purchase a new scooter to replace the one they destroyed and tried to profit from the destruction of. The chance is strong that the property owner would end up taking quite a big loss unless they first get a court to rule that they own the scooter (as recompense for the formal trespass).
Basically, if someone leaves a scooter on your lawn, you don't suddenly become the owner of the scooter. You can tell them to keep the scooter off your lawn, you can remove the scooter to somewhere where they can retrieve it, but you can't destroy it or sell it.

Not that I was particularly serious, but what are the laws regarding littering?

No idea, but I'd expect that to be on the person who actually dumped the scooter where they shouldn't.
-
"Your honor, since the accuser abandoned the scooter on my client's property, and made no effort to get it back after being contacted, my client logically concluded the scooter was trash being illegally dumped. Being a responsible individual, my client ensured that the trash was disposed of in accordance with recycling policies."

Electric scooter explosion in Poznan. Windows in nearby buildings smashed.
-
-
@MrL Any clue about what happened?
Hot gases or a serious fire are not uncommon, as can be seen in a video from 2018:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNBNe_Gq2X4
But blowing out windows? I'm somewhat sceptical.

It exploded while charging, inside a building. Info about shattered windows is from a witness, not official sources.

Yeah. Not only do they have non-broken versions of Windows 10 and Discourse, they also have wireless brakes.

I think I even remember that post elsewere, but one wouldn't be enough anyway. So now forgetting to charge the batteries gets you a free faceplant into the nearest oncoming car. Nevermind the random hiccups in wireless connections.

Gears are for weaklings.

@Luhmann Doesn't a fixie typically still have two gears and a chain?

See.... that's where the market throws a curveball.
It doesn't matter if the product is completely stupid. If people want it, it's not a stupid startup.

No. It can still be stupid. Stupid things can be successful.

That's 2 sprockets. 1 gear. Though I guess since you can go backwards, you could argue that's 2 gears...

Running the engine backwards doesn't make a reverse gear.

My engine doesn't run backwards. (Of course, I can't stay upright when I go backwards either - oh, and trying to brake with your legs on a fixed gear? Yeah, not going to work well at speed. BTDT.)
-
@dcon said in Lime scooters:

Even if you did manage to not break your legs while trying to do so, the angular momentum will reduce the amount of friction between the rear wheel and the ground.

A startup can be dumb as fuck and successful. Often it's only kept going by the lack of non-idiotic competition and/or funds from investors who haven't yet figured out the truth.

I agree.
I mean that the determining factor IMO whether a startup is dumb, is whether you fielded for interest and got back enough interest to justify investment.
If it's a dumb product that everyone is lined up saying, "Take my money", it's not a dumb startup.
Yet, dumb startups can be successful, dumb products can be successful. Smart products can have dumb startups, and vice versa. They are independent factors.

I don't know the English name, and I was on mobile at the time so to type out a sentence to that effect. It is a bicycle braking system where turning the pedals backward for about a quarter of a turn engages the brake.

A startup founder doesn't care whether the investments they're receiving are justified. They only care whether investments keep flowing.
