Rumours: Microsoft to buy github
-
@anonymous234 I wonder how many Linuxy people forgot that Github was a business and not a public service.
It's worse than a business, it's a business accountable to dozens of angel investors. Which means they were probably getting the constant drumbeat of "profits profits profits" the last 5 years.
-
@blakeyrat not many, in fact GitHub was always "great but". In this case, it was/is proprietary. There is a mass exodus to Gitlab currently. It's going to crash hard in the following hours, if it doesn't, then Gitlab's no longer a virgin I guess
-
@admiral_p Maybe GitLab allows you to attach files to bug reports and thus isn't as shitty. Could be a win-win.

@coderpatsy Modern business model for technology companies:
- Give free services to everyone
- Collect user accounts
- Get bought by Google, Microsoft or Facebook
- Profit
How does step 3 work for Google, Microsoft or Facebook though? They are doing step 1 and 2 as well, with exception of Microsoft basically exclusively.
-
@coderpatsy said in Rumours: Microsoft to buy github:
ITT: people who never heard of GitHub for Business.
-
@bulb Step 3 for them is "collect infinite money from investors" apparently.

They have to prepare their migration to the Linux kernel somehow
I mean you can run it side-by side on the same running system and have them send messages to eachother right now.

Maybe I need a bit more explanation on the doom and gloom going on here. Microsoft acquired LinkedIn, and pretty much left them alone and they aren't too different. I know that a lot of Azure stuff is kept on GitHub, so maybe they'll leave it alone like they did LinkedIn and Mojang?
-
@thebread said in Rumours: Microsoft to buy github:

Wow, really? When did that happen?
-
@thebread I don't get the thing I keep seeing about "Microsoft acquired Skype then killed it". I admit I'm not a huge fan of the new Skype UI, but the old UI wasn't better, just different. And Skype's been rock-solid since Microsoft actually bought them servers, unlike the frequent multi-day outages we got before.
-
@blakeyrat I'd rather complain they killed Messenger that was much better in favor of this skype crap
-
@thebread said in Rumours: Microsoft to buy github:
MoJang
That's some interesting capitalization you've got there.
-
@gąska they acquired them back in 2016

I don't know what you're talking about, it's spelled normally in my post

The old one had no ads, and therefore was objectively better.
It also had less weird glitchy behavior.
And Skype's been rock-solid since Microsoft actually bought them servers,
Huh?
unlike the frequent multi-day outages we got before.
What?
You've kind of got that backwards. I never saw Skype outages before Microsoft bought them out...

Here's the thing.
Skype for Business sucks.
Microsoft Teams sucks a few orders of magnitude more, despite being pretty much the same program, using the same infrastructure, by the same company.
Want an easy way to empty your laptop's battery? Unplug your laptop, install Microsoft Teams, and then take a short bathroom break.

So when are they going to rename it to CodePlex?
I miss CodePlex. :(

Did anyone ever figure out why GitHub never managed to implement the most basic features in their issue tracker? After 10 years, it's still embarrassing. There would have been enough time to develop something that doesn't completely suck.

That might be the Facebook case, which does appear to be quite a bubble, but Google seems doing mighty fine (so is Microsoft, but they have solid foundation in Azure and Office 666).

Programmers are experts at working around lack of features, so when making programming tools, you don't really need to have any features at all.

The “attach files to an issue” thing seems to be there, according to the UI:
Never used it myself, but that's not because it isn't there.
-
@dkf Files other than images? You could always attach images. That's no good when the ticket is "implement attached CSS file on mobile version of site" where you want the CSS file attached to the ticket as a record of the work done.
-
@blakeyrat from their help page:
We support these files:
PNG (.png)
GIF (.gif)
JPEG (.jpg)
Log files (.log)
Microsoft Word (.docx), Powerpoint (.pptx), and Excel (.xlsx) documents
Text files (.txt)
PDFs (.pdf)
ZIP (.zip, .gz)
So, you just zip the thing and you can attach anything.
-
@gąska Hm I wonder when they fixed that then.

I apologize, I'm in a particularly constructive mood today. I'll work on that.
-
I wonder whether this means that github will be rewritten from Ruby into C#? It'd be nice to have less Ruby code in the world…
-
@dfdub it's not abuse if there's no other way. If anything, it's GitHub abusing us!
-
@thebread smooth

'Get rid of the idiots' is still pretty high on my list.

Github abandoned meritocracy a while ago.
-
@dfdub Except you can attach files on Github issues, and I have no idea when you couldn't. shrug
-
@erufael in our OSS repo, we work around this by base64 file, then put ASCII letters into animated gif
Morse code is slow but animated gif can be fast forward by gif to video converter

They don't have to rewrite it in C#. They already did. They have their own project hosting, VSTS, which they lately brought up from sucking really, really hard to a match for the best.

Another reason why replacing the crappy GitHub code with (modern—I have the dubious honor of using the 2012 version and that is utter crap) TFS would be a great improvement. It actually has tools for planning. And time tracking. And workflows. And associated changesets…

@zecc Must be in the moderator's bikeshed.
-
We were thinking of moving to GitHub but the idea was spiked on hearing this. No reason given except that we don't like Microsoft which is strange given how many of their products we use on a daily basis.
-
@dogsb Git evangelists continue to behave like Git evangelists.

Huuuuuhhhhh.....I think it got fbmac'd. In any case, it had this link and then a bunch of comments, but the thread itself is deleted:
-
@boomzilla Maybe MS will save Github from the SJW

Hohohoho!
(The author has a few points, but it's all a bit muddled. This is what happens when you get somebody either ignorant or dishonest to talk about something they don't really get).

So much evil would disappear from the world if we just stopped considering earning money to be a sin.

But the recent (well, it's going on for a couple of years) outbreak of GitHub bots just to work around the lack of features is ridiculous. And they mostly implement features like proper CI integration or tracking reviews that other project management tools have built in.
