Some changes planned for the front page
-
First of all: I'm pretty sure I've fixed the submission/contact forms. It looks like the version we tried was not working because of multiple layers of
Task.Result
calls exhausting the thread pool. Apparently ASP.NET MVC supports returning aTask<ActionResult>
from controller actions, so we don't need to useTask.Result
ever. It works pretty well locally now that it's all async. Also:
You'll be automatically logged into the comments if you log into the admin panel. When you post a comment this way, your name will link to your article page (/authors/[name]).
The non-admin-panel changes made by logging in (comment/article edit links being visible, commenting as an author, etc.) persist for up to 2 years instead of 30 minutes, but if you log out manually from the admin panel, those cookies will also be unset.
Additionally, logging in with a forum account no longer looks like a scam:
Other notes:
- I've added an HTTPS redirect for the admin panel because apparently that login wasn't secured but the comment form login was.
- Users that logged into the front page comments via a NodeBB, Discourse, or Community Server account will have their name linked to their forum profile.
- I've removed the Facebook login link. It was already disabled by removing the API key from the configuration file.
- The forum login does work from non-production installs, as long as the NodeBB forum and the WtfWebApp instance have the same encryption keys configured.
Now for the question part: Should forum global moderators be able to moderate front page comments?

The changes to the front page have been deployed by @apapadimoulis about 15 minutes ago, and since nobody's replied to this topic yet, I'm gonna move it to Meta.

@ben_lubar
So now we have this thing, I must complain about the utter lack of third option in your provided choices ...Should forum global moderators be able to moderate front page comments?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No
[ ] We have a front page?

Also:

-

How would anything be different from now if they could?
-
I might actually try to start catching up on the front page articles if I was able to see, and possibly also yea/nay as spam, the "Comment withheld for moderation"s as I went...
just saying...

I noticed we have social media sharing buttons on the Front Page!
You can:
- Share via local Email client.
Bril|ant!

are you running an adblocker that limits the number of tiny icons per page to 1?

On the article page:
On the article listing on the front page:
True to the name, I guess.

Okay, bar is definitely there...
PNG is definitely there...
Umm....One sec, lemme refresh...
Oh, there it is.
Yes, apparently AdBlock is making it disapparate.
-
@Tsaukpaetra that style of blocking is going to cause HUGE amounts of lag every time a page reflows.

No. Usually it's not running at all, because there is not front page!

@loopback0 what does the bonus pack do?
-
According to It Pro Today:
The Bonus Pack components include Microsoft Image Composer, IE 3.0, and Personal Web Server (PWS--a Windows 95 version of Windows NT Workstation's Web server).
-
@Luhmann I keep clicking on that signature's arrow

Doesn't that infringe on a certain Canadian's patent?

Yeah but he's Canadian so the worst that'll happen is they sent the Mounties after you.

If the front page existed, it probably wouldn't have any JavaScript that causes reflows anyway.

Which makes very little sense in context from what you've said previously... What are you talking about JavaScript now? :/

@Tsaukpaetra
I think that's what the forum is written in... maybe there's a hidden module that activates this "front page" category if you find it?

I think that's what the forum is written in... maybe there's a hidden module that activates this "front page" category if you find it?At some point someone mentioned it would be nice to resurrect the bot that reposted Front Page Article links in said mythical category. At another point, someone suggested onebox meta be added to Front Page Articles. At another point, someone argued that this would create unnecessary contention against the New Comments System on the Front Page Articles for the confusing disconnect between the forum and comments sections.
Thus, the quo has been statused.
