In which Ben Lubar builds a new headless Linux machine

@Gribnit
He's still waiting to synchronize the blockchain on his PC so he can cash out his bitcoin and buy the PC. Based on his current download rate, he's on pace for 2971.
-
@izzion well, market movement could change that. as long as the planning effort at any reasonable rate has already exceeded the expense, I'm happy.
-
@mott555 Near a very large shipment, sometimes one or the other of these may be captured by the shipment itself, yielding either very expensive or free shipping.
-
@pie_flavor Correct. Don't give in to those fucking cheapass vendors who have fucked up gigabyte to imply decimal. Demand a binary gigabyte. Fuck gibibyte. If anyone ever asks you to accept this distinction, kill them as many times as circumstances allow.

Status: Computer case and SATA cables have arrived. USB stick with remote Ubuntu installer created. Remaining parts not yet shipped.
-
Both of the transactions are still marked as "Pending". Is this Amazon's problem or my bank's problem? Do I need to contact my bank?
-
@ben_lubar It's not necessarily a problem, they might only process it when the items ship.
-

I've already received the SATA cables (the first row) and the case (part of the order in the second row).
-
@ben_lubar Fair enough, it's still not necessarily a problem.

I have heard that Amazon generally doesn't officially pull the money until the entire order ships, and then the bank can take several days (I've seen up to a week) before it goes from "processing" to actually applied.

Hey Amazon, what does that "Shipping preference" thing mean on the 7 item order you've so far split into 3 parts?

It's a display value?

How many shipments is "as few as possible" for 7 items?
-
@ben_lubar said in In which Ben Lubar builds a new headless Linux machine:

It depends on which warehouses have those items in stock. It's probably cheaper to send you multiple packages than to try and move stuff between warehouses just to send you one box.

So what's the point of the setting? If all the items are available in the same warehouse, it'd be more expensive for them to send them separately.

The point is for when things aren't all dispatching at the same time or from the same place so I'm pretty sure if that was the case it would work out more expensive for you and not Amazon.
If everything is available from the same place at the same time then it comes in a single package.

Minimum 1 maximum 8.

Apparently 3.
Is this the "Ben Lubar bitches and whines about Amazon" thread now?

If you pick that setting, you get charged shipping for one package, regardless of how many they actually use to ship it. (Or $0 if the order total is over $35 or you have Amazon Prime.)
If you don't pick that setting, you get charged shipping for each package, regardless of whether the order total is over $35 or not. (Unless you have Amazon Prime.)
-

And clearly the setting doesn't affect the speed at which they ship the product (it's still two days until the start of the expected delivery window), so why would anyone set it to expensive mode?

If they don't have Amazon Prime, so it's free? You'd have to have more money than sense to pick expensive mode.

No, it's the "Blakeyrat bitches and whines about conversation occurring" thread, as are most of them.

Maybe the display text is a bit of a holdover from before Amazon Prime, Amazon Marketplace, and warehouses everywhere, but if you ordered something that was out of stock or not yet released and you said "as few as possible" they'd hold up your entire order until that missing item was available.

CPU shipped from Lexington, KY
Power supply shipped from ???

It has arrived.

@ben_lubar Are they on Christmas Island time? They're early.

@Zecc Underpromise and overdeliver.
In this case, literally.

thanks for telling me the thing that was delivered an hour ago will arrive some time today

-
Ok, the computer is built. It powers on...
And that's about it. No output on HDMI or VGA. The power button and the case fan seem to be the only things that work so far.
What might I be missing?
-
@ben_lubar Double-check the power leads from the PSU to the motherboard, and make sure they're all plugged in securely (on both ends if it's a modular PSU).
If it's not that, CPU is the only other thing I can think of that is likely to prevent even the BIOS from loading...
-
@sloosecannon and @Weng helped on Discord. I think I can fix this by borrowing the GPU from my desktop computer to set Urist to boot from USB and then putting the GPU back where it belongs.
-
Install went smoothly.
Rebooted.
Apparently I somehow did not install the Linux kernel.
-
@mott555 said in In which Ben Lubar builds a new headless Linux machine:
I'll admit, I've duct-taped SSDs to weird places inside cases before rather than spend the extra money on a mounting bracket and properly attaching them.
Double-sided tape works a treat also. In a pinch I have put a single screw through any hole I could get the SSD to align with in a 3.5" drive bay.
SSDs weigh nothing so it really doesn't matter. You just don't want the drive to flop around in the case and hit something or short something out or whatever.
