Acupuncture. With live bees. Anaphylactic shock and death ensues...

@pjh Not sure if bad ideas thread or evil ideas thread...

Live bees and no emergency plan other than calling an ambulance, which in this case happened to take 30 minutes? Seems like a great idea.
I wonder if they had any adrenaline, breathing aparatus, or even basic first aid training. Sadly the article doesn't say...

The apitherapy clinic personnel administered methylprednisolone. No adrenaline was available.
Even worse is the fact that the clinic did not have epinephrine, the only medication that could have saved her life, or even an epinephrine autoinjector on site in case of just such a reaction.
None of the many news articles covering this report revealed if proper informed consent had been obtained. Though the clinic did not have epinephrine, the did have access to the IV steroid methylprednisolone, which is commonly included in acute management of anaphylaxis but has never been proven to actually improve any outcome, in particular restoration of normal blood pressure or the ability to breath.

One of my colleagues raised an interesting point when he asked "Why not wasps? I could understand that, but not bees." And I do agree with him; wasps can sting several times without dying, so it should be both more economical and humane to use them!
-
The really weird part of this is that she wasn't allergic to bee stings. And then she was.

Because then it wouldn't be apitherapy.
Vespatherapy maybe?
But people would probably get that confused with sewing machines pretending to be scooters.

Not weird at all.
Well, maybe. At first blush. But repeated exposure can - indeed - result in increased risk of anaphylaxis. Bee keepers for example:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15985817
Beekeepers and their family members are at an increased risk of severe sting anaphylaxis and therefore need especially careful instruction with regard to avoidance of re-exposure, emergency treatment and specific immunotherapy with bee venom.

Its been a while since I last read about the subject, but I thought it wasn't uncommon for that to happen.

You can actually build up intolerance. Personally I'm becoming more and more allergic to shellfish...

That's nothing. Just think of what happens to the shellfish!

There's some health benefit to bee sting therapy IIRC. I know my mother would talk about it on occasion.

None that's actually reliably demonstrated in clinical trials, though

Gwyneth Paltrow thinks most people can wipe their bum with a single square of toilet paper.
I am a normal sized bloke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0KnKd3zl6o
I can do some mega shits that makes neo flexing in the matrix looks like some amateur level fart.
There is no way one sheet will wipe an arse with what I call a shit that is called an "event horizon", there is just too much shit.
Gwyneth Paltrow doesn't live in the real world, she doesn't even understand how people poo. Maybe people shouldn't take advice from her regarding bee-keeping.
Also Event Horizon

Of course I can. But my 1 piece is 10ft long...

@dcon Also Iron Man is better when he is a drunken alcoholic billionaire ...
Just saying.
-
As somebody who's not exactly on speaking terms with needles and being stung in general, the idea of bee acupuncture ... Well...
-
@cvi My Dad thinks chinese medicine was wicked until he needed real medicine.
-
@lucas1 Yeah. There's that aspect too.
Had a friend who was convinced into trying out aromatherapy at one point. Plot twist: it didn't work. Acupuncture I can at least see doing something. Like, if you have trouble with some muscle, poking it with sharp bits could conceivably do something.
Hmm. Actually, the same argument applies to bee acupuncture. I'm just less convinced of the potential for a beneficial outcome.
-
@cvi I had a lot of physiotherapy for the fact that right side of my body got smushed.
While not majorly disabled. I have bit weaknesses in my shoulder (bone is healed wrong etc) and my right knee is now knackered.
Anything that isn't real medicine is bullshit.

They'll likely be more frequent but less epic.
-
@boomzilla Talking about that it is almost kebab time.

@lucas1 Speaking of taking a dump and wiping with 1..n sheets of toilet paper. You infidels are all doing it wrong, and Gwyneth Paltrow can surely carry the brown flag of the shitty arse pride parade, should one occur.
Toilet paper won't make your arse anything like clean. You end up with a thin layer of shit smeared all over the skin, sore skin if you are too eager to clean it good, and, in case of some shitty toilet paper brands, particles of that paper up your arse.
Use water and soap, and then you have an opportunity to walk around with a truly clean arse.
Those muslim immigrants could at least bring some nice bathroom designs with them instead of blowing up teen rape statistics and themselves, or organizing their shariah patrols. Just saying.

I know how to wipe my arse thanks. Maybe you didn't learn it properly?
-
@lucas1 whatever. Just pointing out that all of the white Europe and the U. S. is doing it the inferior way.
-
@wft I am sure your shit doesn't stink. If that is what you wanted to hear. Does that make you feel better? I hope it does.

You just have to believe it, placebo is that awesome. Even taking a sugar pill knowing it's a placebo has been show to work IIRC.

If there had room for one when my ex-wife and I were remodeling our house, we would totally have put one in. They're quite useful for personal hygiene in a number of circumstances. Unfortunately, that would have pretty much involved enlarging our bathroom into our neighbor's yard. The city would not have approved of that (to say nothing of our neighbor).

Bee venom is pretty useful for arthritis, tendonitis, and some muscle conditions.

Because other things are at play.
I do think, however, that this research is telling us we should start to recognise the benefits of doctors being realistically positive when they talk to patients.
One hypothesis is that patients who have previously got better after being treated by trusted doctors might experience subconscious boosts to levels of endorphins and neurotransmitters, thereby improving their symptoms. This is the conditioning effect, made famous by the Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov[...]
Another possibility is that patients might be told that placebos have worked before for people with their conditions, leading to a conscious expectation of improvements, resulting in chemical releases that relieve their symptoms.
But, in order for placebos to work, we have to believe they are “real” treatments, which means the doctor would have to lie to us and say that the placebo was actually a real treatment. Or
Open-label placebos probably work in two ways. The first is expectation. Open-label are usually given with a positive suggestion (the doctor will tell the patient the pill is just a placebo but adds that it “produces significant improvement for patients like you”. This positive suggestion creates a positive expectation, which can activate the reward mechanisms in the brain and help the body produce its own substances, such as painkilling endorphins.

Speaking of doctors using questionable methods, it seems that part of a standard physiotherapy my roomie who has a bad knee sometimes receives includes electrostimulation and some sort of an electromagnet.
Now, electrostimulation, okay, I mean, it won't give you abs like those silly commercials tell you, but it will genuinely make the muscles flex and my roomie claims that it does help with the pain, it's basically exercising the muscles that get overworked / stiff due to limping / inability to properly flex the leg, fine.
But what in the fuck should a magnetic field do for a bad knee? What is there for the magnet to work on? Tiny amounts of iron in the bloodstream? To heal a bad joint?
I'm not one of those people who consider all/most doctors to be idiots (though I know plenty of people like that), but you know, sometimes...

The really weird part of this is that she wasn't allergic to bee stings. And then she was.
IIRC from when I read about it earlier this week, this was her 24th time using this "therapy". Repeated exposure can cause anaphylaxis.
