A fool and his not-really-money are soon parted

@TimeBandit Unfortunately (i.e. less Schadenfreude to be had), the order is to not to hand over 5 billion actual dollars, but just his share of bitcoin "worth" that amount. Try selling that and see how much real money you get out of it.

It would pay for a lot of Usenet access, or stuff from Newegg
-
@hungrier I didn’t say it’s not worth anything (when you sell, even though it is worthless crap), but there’s no chance you’d sell it for $5bn without “the market” crashing to a tiny fraction of its value.
-
@topspin But who needs the bitcoin market when you can get 20 million 10 TB hard drives?
-
@hungrier that sure is a lot of porn.

You say that like it would be a bad thing.

I most certainly do not!
-
I got some not-really-money just now!
Y'all should send them to me if you're not using your account.
-
@Tsaukpaetra yet another thing the Initiative Q people did wrong - critical mass can be achieved much more easily if you get all your followers through some other means first.
-
-
@boomzilla Didn't CBOE already do that a couple years ago, immediately before Bitcoin's price had a massive crash it never recovered from?
-
@Mason_Wheeler why are you asking me?
-
@boomzilla Because you posted the article...
-
@Mason_Wheeler not about some loser city like Chicago, I didn't.

This is why I don't want shitcoins to disappear.
-
@boomzilla said in A fool and his not-really-money are soon parted:
So if the entire value of shitcoins is in money laundering and the criminal market (proposition by me), and it appears it no longer works for even that, will it now crash completely? Let’s hope so.

He was a former hacker from Alabama who styled himself a “disruptive technologist” and believed that he was using his data-mining expertise as a force for good.
...
He gave a talk at a conference in Pyongyang about how to use cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to launder money, according to federal investigators.Uh huh.
-
Well, you could say he nailed the "disruptive" part.

The parable of the Farmer and the Viper applies here.

Found on Reddit, there are now two (new?) things in cryptocurrency:
- Investing with leverage in margin accounts
- You can offer your account up as part of that leverage, and be paid a fee for the purpose. It's risk-free interest! ...oh, wait, no, the TOS says that if the people investing on margin don't pay the loan back, you get screwed.
If you like additional discussions of YOR A IDIOT, here's a popcorn sub's take on it:

So the rapper Akon is going to build his own Wakanda (from Black Panther), a futuristic city in Senegal that is to be funded by and will use his own cryptocurrency: Akoin. I can't see any way this will go horribly wrong.

I'm going to wager he'll be so lonely

So I just opened my Youtube subscriptions and this was the first thing I saw:
I never subscribed to any channel that had anything to do with cryptocurrencies, but upon clicking the channel name, it looks like it's SpaceRip, a channel that has some cool space videos that I watched a few times. The space videos are still on the channel, but they renamed themselves to what you see in the pic, and they're currently broadcasting about the "next big thing in crypto" or some shit. It's very clearly not a scam, as you can see from the video description:
I wonder what happened. Did they get their account broken into? Did they sell the account? Has the owner gone mad? Was this the plan all along, to lure in people over a period of several years and then stick ETH 2.0 in their faces?
Oh and when I finally gathered the courage to open the video, the first thing I saw was some rat-human hybrid saying that "cryptoeconomics can compete with cryptography". Has science gone too far?

Akoin
It's only worth penn
iesyIt's a single coin, divided.

They secured a deal™ already:
-
@blek Roughly 6 hours later and it's still streaming. I genuinely wonder if it's on a loop, or if the rat-human hybrid has acatually been talking for somewhere between 1 hour and a could of thousand years, or if it's running on a loop. Each of these possibilities have an equal chance of being true.
Anyway, now it's saying "SNARKs are more efficient" or some shit. Of course they are, I knew that all along.

I have huge savings in SNARKs, but nowadays I mostly invest in MOCKs or flat out INSULTs.

@topspin I'm old school, I just use regular old fiat sarcasm

Probably.... there's a lot of ctyprocurrency malware on about now that tries to steal youtube accounts to promote the crypto scams......

For 741ms I misread this, but hey, the video is topical so why not share?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmONXgmSqYA
The first five minutes are full of jargon and "check out this enterprise-level open-source shit!", and that's half the video! The rest is blabbering about the network topology. The last two minutes were "what we want to do next".
WTF is this video?!?

Funny enough, my DNS has been really dodgy lately, but for this it was fast.
