I can beat that. Late last year someone asked what the HG in HG Wells stood for, and I said "mercury". Then it occurred to me that Wells' near-namesake Orson Welles called his organization (the one that famously put on "War of the Worlds" in 1938) the Mercury Theatre of the Air.
Suddenly there was angelic music and a beam of light from above.
This doesn't beat the ones above, but on a related note I have thought of two of the characters' names in The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon and Leonard. Sheldon Leonard was a top director and producer of sitcoms in the 1960's.

In the mid 70s there was a kid's TV show called The Ghosbusters which featured three characters, two men and and a gorilla, named Spencer, Tracey and Kong.
Spencer and Tracey (the gorilla) were a reference to actor Spencer Tracey, and Kong was a reference to King Kong, with the additional joke that the character named Kong was not the gorilla.

Is that a shalephone?

@Mason_Wheeler Asparagus requires a lot of sun light.
So I'm glad that lets the sunshine in.

And Chuck Lorre, the show's creator, has been quite open about how that was a deliberate tribute.

The other night I watched an old episode of Password from 1968 that had Peter Lawford as one of the celebrity guests, and he mentioned that his new film with Sammy Davis Jr was called "Salt and Pepper". Allen Ludden jokingly said "and you play Pepper?"
Which he did. They did that on purpose too.

Reminds me of Larry and Curly.

Some fat comedian: I was just hired to star in a TV series called Neckfat and Núñez.
I play Núñez.

I'm dabbling in stock investments. Mostly vegetable, chicken & beef.
I'm hoping to become a bouillonaire.

bouillonaire
that's not how the inhabitants of Bouillon are called.

My wife's been complaining about her feet hurting, so she put pads in her shoes.
That's just adding insoles to injury.

Q: How do you make a waterbed more bouncy?
A: Add spring water!

They're essential services. The photo above constitutes a terrorist act.

I don't think a saint could make a pun like that.

@jinpa Puns are holy. They're the highest, most intellectual form of humor. And I can't accept any disagreement here--that would be heresy.

@Jaloopa I guess it made more sense back in 1968.

@Jaloopa
Peter Lawford:
Sammy Davis Jr:
Any reason you can think of why it would be humorous to suggest that Lawford was the Pepper of the duo?
-
-
@Gąska Yes it is. But as you pointed out, it was 1968.

Not a lot to do these days. I'm watching my attractive neighbour drill holes in her fence. It's pretty boring.
-
@Mason_Wheeler I'm sure I've seen this before, and I think there has already also been a discussion around the fact that the correct, though less common, phrasing is "champing at the bit."

It's a little known fact, that while the Enigma machine codes were being cracked by Alan Turing, his sister Kay provided the tea, snacks and sandwiches.
