One thing I always liked/found distinctive about Vancouver is it's tons of weird cable-stayed suspension bridges. Here in the US, we build even the new ones "normal" (with two parallel main cables, like the Golden Gate).
I've seen those new-fangled bridges here. There's definitely one in Delaware, and I think I've seen some elsewhere, though I can't recall where, exactly.
-
@boomzilla Yeah in all honesty, it's probably more due to span-length than anything else. Bridges in the Narrows are going to have a long span-length because... well the fucking Narrows. It's a miracle they were able to sink that first caisson back in the 40s.
Same reason we have floating bridges on Lake Washington, the geography's a bear and Lake Washington's inexplicably like 500,000 feet deep.
-
@blakeyrat I've seen most new bridges in the Eastern half of the country go up in the new style. We have way fewer suspension bridges in general, though.

@lorne-kates Vacation-- TO TARGET!
You know here in the Seattle area you could have seen Target, Fred Meyer, K-Mart and WalMart all on the same day. It's like the Four Corners-- of shitty department stores.

You know, your lack of excitement specifically in the "should I visit Seattle" thread was one of the reasons I skipped Seattle.
And going on vacation for a month and a half means, at some point, you will be stopping in a department store for supplies. Especially baby supplies. Especially poop related baby supplies.
-
Google: founded 1998. Only 18 years old. That explains the lack of a site crawl.

Also, I wanted to see at least one Target in the US. Target came to Canada a couple years ago, and it was such an epic, multi-tiered, billion dollar disaster that was spectacular failures on every single level-- from distribution to marketing to hiring-- such a mega WTF of greed, stupidity, incompetence and utter lack of understanding of the country, that it'll be taught in textbooks for decades to come.
But throughout the entire lifecycle of the disaterous attempt to come North, everyone in Canada was told by their American friends "oh man target is great low prices great products it's gonna be amazing".
It wasn't, and I had to see for myself what an 'authentic american' Target was like. Turns out-- more or less exactly the same. And the exchange rate sucks.

Eh...they're OK. Walmart has better prices. Target is never as crowded, though.
-
@boomzilla
And now Target is the ideal place to let people suffering from gender dysphoria walk in on your daughter in the ladies' room!
-

Walmart has better prices.
But it also has people of incredible girth waddling through the aisles. One day, one of them will have enough gravitational pull to implode the whole store and collapse into a black hole, so I make it a rule not to go there.

Gonna try to get some of these bad boys on NodeBb

I use this phone, and now the poster is in a museum.

I dunno, the one near me was about as good as the Zellers that it replaced that I never went to until it was about to shut down.

Except from the first BASIC manual, written by Bill Gates.
Right from the start, . Microsoft documentation was out of date and actually located somewhere else.

How many operating systems and browsers that you use are in museums?

Computer Space was used as a futuristic set decoration in 1973's Soylent Green. Now you know.
At one point, Leigh Taylor-Young is seen playing it.
Charlton Heston famously hated sci-fi, but damned did he have a knack for picking great sci-fi movies to star in.

Back to the computer museum for a moment...
Kids these days and their damn moon landings...

@lorne-kates I find it amazing that computers that primitive put men on the motherfucking Moon when modern devices so frequently struggle to manage opening a text file properly.

Doing math is easy. Converting arbitrary amounts of data to pretty pictures on a screen and letting a person interact with them is a lot more work.
-
@boomzilla
What society really needs is the LawnEvicter 3000, though, amirite?
-
@izzion No. Sometimes the old ways are best.
-
-
@accalia not as powerful as the 9000 but more configurable than the 1000
