At some point I've configured some group policy or something, so now W10 bugs me about new updates, but doesn't try to install them itself. I am cool with waiting a few months to see what awful new things are coming.
-
For Home users, many of the new features in the Creators Update are focused on making it easier to consume and create 3D content. The update will include support for mixed-reality headsets, with Windows 10-targeted visors from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo launching this year.
Other consumer-targeted additions include 3D Paint and a community site for sharing 3D creations. Also new is better tab management in the Edge browser, Windows 10 Game mode, Beam game streaming and new ebook capabilities.

@anonymous234 Don't be too harsh: if MS keep adding stuff to Edge at this rate, it might actually become a viable product!

No.

@anonymous234
Except I have crater update on my phone and none of those 3d things exist.

Is there a way to move the temp directories on Windows? My
C:
is rather tiny and constantly low on space. I'll resize it one of these days, but I have to backup some of the stuff on other partitions first. I'd like to pull the updates ASAP though.

Set Temp and Tmp to whatever you want. I have mine pointing to a RAMdisk.
There are two sets -- User and System. I set them both to the same location.

3D Paint
I hope they still keep the old Paint alongside it, rather than replacing it like the rumours from a while ago were saying.
-
/me suddenly got the idea to point
%temp%
toNUL
On someone else's machine, of course
-
@Helix Oh, mobile? That's different™.
Apparently Paint 3D is not yet on mobile, but View 3D should be. They are all terrible and useless anyway.
I uploaded a simple Paint3D scene but NodeBB changes the extension from .fbx to .bin so you'll have to fix that and try to open it.
Or try this Remix3D model (this COMPLETELY locks up Edge in my desktop computer so be careful): https://www.remix3d.com/board/43b2B5ziOyn

Windows 10 Game mode
Is "game mode" really needed? If you still do things like terminating explorer.exe in this day and age, you're uhhh... kinda weird.
(If anything, Chrome is the enemy if you want to squeeze out extra performance, but that would be obvious for performance-savvy people)
-
@Sumireko said in Wondows 10 Craters' Pupdate:

No, but try and tell hardcore PC gamers that.
-
@Sumireko From what I hear, it's useful if you're having issues getting it up
(your framerate)
-
@Sumireko gamers and audiophiles are snake oil salesmens' dream customers
-
Opens fine in View 3d, but how do i create content....like...you know.. they demoed? And why not enable the use of 'cardboard' for View 3d? Why do MS make presentations on the stuff they have actually excluded from the build, like the 'my people' feature.

it would be nice if "GameMode" just means "we're turning off all our "maintenance" tasks so you don't start playing then wonder where all your frames went because windows update decided to apply an update and is sitting at 99% across all your cores because it runs as a higher priority process than your game does.
if it does more shenanigains than that, or fails to do that i will be disappoint.
-
@Sumireko
ISTR having read somewhere that Game Mode also provides an additional level of override to Windows Update so that it won't whack your Twitch stream just because you happened to start streaming during your normal idle hours.

or maybe changed it to be "allowable reboot time" so i can just set it to 0300 and say "if i'm still fiscusing awake at 0300 go ahead and reboot on me because i should be flapjacking asleep."
cause that would be nice.

Also, by default, if you were to move your user profile, then your personal temp would move too.

Look, I'm not big on Windows administration, OK?
Also, I can barely find shit on Windows 10 any more (thank fuck the old control panel is still present, for now).

I'm buttuming Windows Update uses the system temp though, which is my main concern.
Honestly, I'd just junction the stuff as I please, but ever since I heard horror stories about some of the junctions inside user directories...

I think it actually uses its own temp, but yeah, it'll be on the system drive.

Can I have my

Yeah, I suspect WU is ... special. So adjusting the temp variables probably won't affect it. I have a VM (well a couple) and a machine on the fast ring - after every update I run the disk cleaner to cleanup the the install files (and the old rollback copy of windows). That typically frees up 20-35GB of data...
-
I see Remix3D is off to a good start

oh look, I found one:

@Yamikuronue Puppies?
5 newly born puppies

WU uses %windir%\SoftwareDistribution as its staging folder for updates. This cannot be directly changed, though you can use junction points (as described in the link above) to "trick" Windows into storing the files elsewhere.
Like all such abuses of the hard-coded Windows file structure (see also: completely moving the Users directory), this is not an actually Microsoft-supported solution, and in previous versions of Windows usually had to be undone before you could apply Service Packs.
Given that W10 has killed the Service Pack servicing model in favor of the In-Place Upgrade feature updates, I would expect that every major Feature Update will undo your change for you, as it installs a new Windows directory and shuffles your old one out to pasture.

The problem is, when I'm asleep my computer is still working. Things like downloading a couple hundred gigabytes of files or rendering video with all 8 cores at 100% for a few hours. That's the whole point of doing it while I'm asleep.
My computer very rarely has any "idle" time, so Microsoft can just fuck off with this idea that they're going to force a bunch of shit on me whether I like it or not.

-shrug- i'm meh on that score. i setup a linux box to do my renders and torrenting of porn for @Perverted_Vixen . that never has to reboot, not even for updates.
-
@accalia IOW: Win10 isn't that bad, as long as you have a Linux box to do your serious stuff on it

magically secure? no.
significantly more secure due to being a less viable target for self replicating and scattershot malware? Yes.
My setup would probably resist a targeted attack for a while, but it would eventually crack, my ice ain't that good. But then it doesn't have to be, it just has to be good enough to stop the drivebys and smart enough to scream for help if a targeted attack shows up, and i my ice is good enough for that.
