@r10pez10 I was going to compliment you on the realistic one-box including a period-appropriate "Netscape NOW!" GIF.
Then I hit "View Raw" and saw it was part of the actual one-box. I am disturbed.

WTF even?!?!
oooh......
i should nip down to the local Homeless Despot and grab some fittings from the plumbing aisle.... i could make something like that for.... probably about 50$ all in, and that's if i go for the good wood to mount it on, and overbuy so i end up making two, maybe three of the things......
but even for 50$ to make three (and keep one because the first two will be rubbish as i learn) would be worth it for the fun of making that thing.

@tsaukpaetra I enjoy the snide remark, but can you fill me in on why this is a dumb thing? Seems like they have significant following and are in shipping stage.

If all it took to build muscle and burn fat was to think I was healthy, I would be a supermodel by now.
-
@tsaukpaetra Um, the functionality of your hypothalamus is just a bit more complicated than 'thinking you're healthy'. If the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus could be controlled, it could directly increase your metabolism and lower your weight. And studies have proven that the ventromedial hypothalamus can in fact be stimulated by electroshock to the vestibular nerve in rabbits.

Well, lemme just drop half a grand on this wonder device that (apparently) hasn't been clinically tested (you'd think they'd be uber proud to post links to published results), provides journal articles that seem to be only loosely related to their claims and had relatively low sample sizes (one of the articles was almost completely off base), and really hasn't been proven to any real degree.
Sure, electrifying the brain can impact brain function, but I'd like just a little bit more evidence before buying this snake oil.
A quote by a journalist of some dude puts it rather well:
It's not that the science is dumb, just that we're off selling the next miracle product that will at best maybe-kinda "inspire" your body to magically burn fat, and at worse alter your brain functionality that cannot be reliably predicted in the long-term (due to lack of testing and data, natch).
-
@tsaukpaetra I sense skepticism.
Make no mistake, if it functions in the precise way they say it does, if it can truly manipulate the stimulation of the vestibular nerve, then it is likely that it would be able to have the effects they say it does.
The question simply becomes whether it does actually precisely manipulate the stimulation of the vestibular nerve, or whether it simply miscellaneously zaps you and costs a ton to boot.

There is widespread acceptance that splitting your skull with an axe will impact brain function.

@zecc That there is. It's not remotely relevant, but there is.

Bussard Fusion Reactor
You know you're too much of a nerd when your first reaction is "those red bits on Starfleet ship nacelles?"
Sorry for the , but those "red bits" aren't reactors. They are buzzard collectors, presumably for collecting all of the space buzzards, and prevent them from getting caught in the ship propellers.
Seriously though, they are called "Bussard collectors", and function to collect interstellar particles.

I know that, but my brain also uses fulltext indexes, and similarity was big enough for the filter to catch it.
-
@onyx those space buzzards are tricky bastards!
-
@doctorjones I keep thinking it's a weird combination - bussard collectors, deuterium crystals, and antimatter in the same drive?

@boomzilla I've only watched like 10 seconds of the video, completely muted so I can't hear anything, and I already hate that woman so much. There's just something about her facial expressions
...yeah. And she's clearly trying really hard to be fun and quirky and empowered. And of course, it's a "smash the patriarchy" thing. I assume the MRAs will respond by drawing dicks on some paper.

@anonymous234 I'm always amused by the conceit that straight men don't want to "celebrate" vaginas or women's boobs.

And, strangely enough, if we "celebrate" penises it tends to result in problems.

"The team" by titles (ordered the way they have them listed, emphasis mine):- CEO
- Managing Director
- Chief Financial Officer
- Chief Communication Officer
- Marketing Manager
- External Innovation Advisor
- Head of Design
- Research Scientist
- Communication Officer
- Graphic Designer
- Marketing Assistant
So, 11 specifically named & pictured people, 8 of whom are in marketing or pure overhead roles. And 1 of the 3 people whose title indicates he could ostensibly be involved in actually making the thing work is an "External Advisor".
Yeah, totally not a marketing scam that ripped off someone else's technical design ideas.
-
@tsaukpaetra It would make more sense to integrate into something like this:
(yes, that appears to be a mouse). If the handle of this was a joystick, it would even have some useful accuracy, which the tilting of normal mouse is unlikely to have and neither is the thumb nipple.

Do you think it was done by someone at Initiative Q?
BattBump are developing an app. The technology aspect regarding the transfer of battery would be purchased from a company/and or persons who already have developed the technology. We will will not be developing this technology ourselves nor utilising any technology within the app without permission of the creators technology or collaborator on board. The current funding will be used to have the shell of the app developed, ready for the technology to be integrated when and if it is available. The video and creative stills are a storyboard to give an idea of how the app and technology would work together once it is available and once it is integrated alongside BattBump. This is our research and development phase and we thank and appreciate our backers patience and support.
Emphasis added.
-
@boomzilla Oh, but they seem to know the magic words:
BattBump utilises Blockchain technology so every time you bump battery you'll earn BB tokens. These tokens will accumulate in your crypto wallet, which you can use to pay for everyday purchases. You'll also be able to trade BB Tokens with other users.

You guys laugh, but I have participated in a battery-sharing thing before.
Admittedly, it was when the charging port on my daughter's phone was broken, and every day she'd swap batteries with me or her brother (we all have the same model phone) so that we could charge the one she'd been using. It worked reasonably well, and eventually we replaced her phone because it was cheaper than getting the charging port repaired.
