@boomzilla if family and friends want to help you pay for your honeymoon, no problem.
You don't need a website for that. That is not "crowdfunding".
It's just applying a new buzzword to an old idea (wedding registries).
Did you drop this?

I love the truth in advertising on this one:
A notebook that is as interesting and unique as it is useful and convenient.

More specifically, it's $25 for half a notebook.

Apparently the QA team was none too pleased, reporting "instructions unclear, dick stuck in pickle jar".

You can crowdfund a honeymoon:
Only if you are a totally self-absorbed cunt. But you can do it.
One of the things that I noticed when we were looking for wedding registries was that the major ones typically didn't have any way to put large-ticket items on there in multiple chunks. And asking for cash donations instead of gifts is considered tacky, even if they're designated for a specific purpose.
Why can't we put "1/5th of a new flatscreen TV" on the wedding registry? I mean, there's only so many towels, toasters, and blenders that you need. There's always the "sign up for way more shit than you could possibly use and then return a bunch of it" option, but that's work, and the people who gave you the gifts would probably be hurt if they knew that you returned their gift for cash. Why not give them the opportunity to give you stuff you actually need, without making them pool their money for it (we put a KitchenAid mixer on our registry, and several people all pooled their money to buy it for us... it would've been nice if we could've let the registry do the work of coordinating that for them/us)?

@tsaukpaetra my gag reflex was triggered just looking at that fucking monstrosity. They took that picture seconds before she vomited in the trash can.

@polygeekery it's so massive. Why would anyone want to put it in their mouth? ()

@raceprouk said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:
Ooh, I do love tearing these apart! :D
Me too, although it helps to list what each one is so that other people don't have to click the link or attempt to infer what the items were.
#15. It wouldn't surprise me if, in 20 years' time, people are still predicting the imminent demise of the 3.5mm headphone jack.
( 3.5mm headphone jacks)
Or paper books.#14. Because we need to make cirrhosis of the liver easier to get
(hangovers)
Isn't it the alcohol that gives both the high and the hangover?#13. Yes, it's so much more convenient to unlock a phone, hunt for the app, start it, restart it, etc, etc, etc.
(remote controls)
Agreed. My parents used to just have one of my siblings change the channel or the volume.#12. This one I agree with.
(physical film video recordings)
Not to mention being able to have exactly duplicate backups and source control.#11. Good luck powering a kettle or a vacuum from USB.
(power sockets)
They just need a new high-amperage standard!#10. Eh... possible, I guess.
("Fish on Fridays")
I challenge the claim. They're basically guessing or guesstimating on a lot of the data, and commercial fishing operations are careful to not damage the breeding populations beyond their annual recovery rates.#9. Hackable doors! Just what I've always wanted!
(door keys)
Agreed. A physical entrance controller should always have a physical bypass system.#8. Basic telephony isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
(phone numbers)
Agreed. As long as people have smartphones, they'll have phone numbers.#7. This one I can believe.
(smoking)
I sure hope so! The smell is terrible.#6. This one is a genuine oft-reported issue.
(antibiotics)
I challenge this claim as sensationalization. So-called "superbugs" are actually less viable than their normie cousins, because they lack something fundamental to having a "healthy" population/genetic pool.
The only advantage drug-resistant strains have is that they don't die as quickly in the presence of antibiotics. Often they can't eat or they reproduce much more slowly or something else detrimental like that.#5. 2020 is too soon, but this is coming eventually.
(human-driven cars)
I think there's too much standardization necessary for this to become a normal and regular thing. There's too much variability in driving for it to be any time soon, though. (E.g. how quickly can a passenger change the destination or path to it?)#4. This I can also believe.
(phone charging via cords)
Why not just implement widescale broadcast power?#3. How wonderful, assuming what applies to the US applies to the whole world. For us Europeans, the proportion of manuals is still well above that of automatics, even with an increasing number of electric cars. And it'll be a few decades before manuals stop being the top transmission type.
(manual transmissions)
I think it's only counting new cars sold during that year. And it probably does have a US-centric bias.
Besides, if human-driven cars are becoming obsolete (#5), then wouldn't that by implication demand that manual transmissions also disappear?#2. Better lighting for less energy. What's not to like?
(incandescent bulbs)
Blue is a terrible color for nighttime lighting. It totally destroys the human eye's adjustment to dim lighting.
Red is best for "night vision", but classic soft yellow is a fairly decent compromise between them.#1. Technically, chocolate is already a luxury food. It just happens to be cheap, too.
(chocolate)
I really don't think chocolate production will diminish. If global warming heats West Africa too much to grow cacao trees, then places that were previously too cold would have become warm enough to support them.

if they are denying science to that degree then they might as well deny gravity and try to fly by throwing themselves at the ground and missing, preferably from a tall building....
actually...... there's minimum downside to that. Either they get proved wrong in a practical way (that does leave a mess to clean up) or they actually are right and we now know how to fly.

do you think that would improve the results?
does they type of drink matters? or is the important part the ethanol?

If nothing else it helps to prevent one from unduly panicking, which you definitely shouldn't do.
does they type of drink matters? or is the important part the ethanol?
It is a curious fact, and one to which no-one knows quite how much importance to attach, that something like 85 percent of all known worlds in the Galaxy, be they primitive or highly advanced, have invented a drink called jynnan tonyx, or gee-N'N-T'N-ix, or jinond-o-nicks, or any one of a thousand variations on this phonetic theme.
The drinks themselves are not the same, and vary between the Sivolvian ‘chinanto/mnigs’ which is ordinary water served just above room temperature, and the Gagrakackan 'tzjin-anthony-ks’ which kills cows at a hundred paces; and in fact the only one common factor between all of them, beyond the fact that their names sound the same, is that they were all invented and named before the worlds concerned made contact with any other worlds.
-
@boomzilla However drinking is not required for flying, merely the knack for being distracted at the crucial time matters.
-
@arantor Exactly. Which effect I would describe as "improv[ing] the results."
-
@boomzilla I would say the consumption of a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is a prerequisite for dealing with Microsoft products.
-
@pie_flavor Yeah, of course, but we're only talking about throwing one's self off of a building in an attempt to defy gravity.
-
@boomzilla If you could do that, you would be the bee's knees, the wasp's nipples. You would be, I would go so far as to say, the entire set of erogenous zones of every major flying insect of the Western world.

Music played through the earphones was supposed to change in pace and volume as the user’s heart raced during a workout.
Volume I can understand, but pace? Like it would speed up your music? Is this something anyone would want?
-
@boomzilla said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:
it's shit like that that has made me decide that i'm either going to invest in a company as an actual investor so i actually get legal options available if they go south, or i'mma gonna wait til they're actually shipping their product. because this whole preorder stuff never seems to live up to the marketing wank it's sold with, if it even ends up being shipped at all.

Depends on if you're listening to specific songs, or just generic music. Like, the music integration with game mechanics was part of why I loved Portal 2, for instance.
