This one is too good to pass up:
Fuck your startup scene with your 30 minute morning routines of reading TechCrunch, TNW, Wired, Gizmodo, Mashable, The Verge and ProductHunt- all so you don’t feel ‘left out’. Fuck your weird fucking conversations, things like “OMG did you see Snapchat’s new feature? OMG Instagram is totally copying Snapchat? Did you see Zuck’s live townhall? OMG did you see what Elon Musk tweeted? OMG Uber raised another round!” Fuck that. Nobody cares.
Fuck reading a book a week. No one can read that fast. Let me repeat that -NO ONE CAN FUCKING READ THAT FAST. How about actually reading that god damn book?! Fuck your references to Malcolm Gladwell and Dan Ariely, and stop fucking quoting Lean Startup, for Christs sake. We’ve all fucking read it.
Fuck you productivity freaks. You try to make me feel bad because I woke up “only” at 6AM. Shit, you woke up at 4:30, meditated for 30 minutes, reviewed your quarterly and yearly “goals” for another 30 minutes, and slurped on a delicious Soylent shake while checking daily retention trends. Fuck your noise cancelling headphones and Pomodoro timers, your fucking to-do lists, apps, notes, sticky notes, and God knows what else.
Fuck you and your stupid interview questions. Who the fuck thinks of these stupid fucking questions? I never had to shift a bit in a C array in my life! And I never got a compilation error on a white board, when I need a hash set in Java I just use HashSet- I don’t fucking care about the complexity of this code block because I can afford another EC2 instance! So fuck you.
Yeah

i routinely read a book a week, if not more.
reading is FUN!
unless you mean reading those "startup culture" books, because fuck them.
the rest of it...... -shrug- well i'm not going to stop you from copulating with all of that, but i think like 90% of that copulation is technically illegal....

I don't read it this way: of course it's possible, but reading a book a week on top of doing all the other stuff you should be doing is not possible.
Especially when you're supposed to work 100 hours per week.
-
@kt_ said in Fuck you <del>startup</del> world:

oooh. that bullshit.
Look, you pay me a salary. that means i've sold you 40 hours a week of my life, if you want more than that you are going to have to PAY ME for that time. Just because i'm on salary and therefore overtime exempt does not mean i'm willing to magically work 100 hours a week so my effective hourly wage is less than i would earn if i got three full time jobs working minimum wage.
because that's not going to happen. I respect my time and if you want it you will compensate me for it.

Especially when you're supposed to work 100 hours per week.Kinda depends on the book, but it is entirely possible to read a book a week, even under these conditions. Hell, the last couple novels I read (a couple of the Dresden Files books) I did in about 3 days each, and that wasn't spending a whole lot of time with them (maybe an hour or two a day, max).
-
@kt_ said in Fuck you <del>startup</del> world:
Fuck your ... sticky notes
What's your problem with sticky notes? I have an end desk which abuts the back of a set of lockers which I use as a personal noticeboard. Currently it holds 5 work-related sticky notes and 10 with pictures I drew of dinosaurs. Sticky notes are great. (Also a laminated card reminding me that my desk isn't actually mine which must be filled out every week or else the desk will be assumed to be available for anyone to use. And a spoon.)

First time I read that series I did almost one a day, but I missed a lot of sleep. I found it hard to put them down.

I don't think I can do the math on that one, but you're claiming to make less then $45,240? Cuz that's how much you would make working 24 hours a day all day everyday for minimum wage.

So

Well, I put some facts in my rant to make it believable. The part about me reading books quickly and having to use sticky notes for everything was true. I would never, ever use noise-cancelling headphones, though. ;)

I'm salaried, and I make way less than that. It's one reason I'm curious as to what my company's gonna do come December when the new US overtime rules kick in...

Different places have different minimum wages. Here that'd be well over 60k.

I just had an interview like that, with algorithms and complexities.
I understand why people don't like this.
But I participated in the algorithmics competitions and gave lectures about this stuff, so I will definitely not complain :P

I like to read Neal Stephenson books you insensitive clod!
-
When I was in my secondary school, I used to read dictionary-sized book (in Chinese or English) every 3 days during my summer holiday.
Be able to get used to that makes me a speedy reader, and make me the only one in my class being able to complete "reading comprehension" mock test in A-Level within time limit and with full mark. (IMO that kind of test format is pretty off-the-point because practically no one is going to judge how good you are in Chinese skill using that as criteria... maybe that's the reason why even though this format exists as a selectable form of test in the syllabus, it's never chosen for the actual exam)

No. Usually fictions, occasionlly other kinds of books like this one. The local district library here did own all three books in the series.

I usually get two hours because of this, averaging ~12k words a night, depending on sustained mental capacity (very recently it has gone down now that I've been needing more S5 time for maintenance).
Despite this, I'm way behind on my list...

I have a Kindle hooked up with my local library - just filled my list again. But it's not nearly as long as I'd like - I keep finding interesting books, then discover they're part of a series. And the stupid library only has books 2+3, or 1+5, or some shit like that. (A lot of my reading is on the train)
