Maybe everyone else knew, but I didn't know that RepRap and the modern 3D printing movement came about from a university project to develop a machine that could build itself.
The guy who started it is a pretty interesting fellow. Well worth a watch.

well..... with CNC routers, lathes, and mills, 3D printers capable of printing in anything from PLA to basically Rubber (Thermo plastic elastomere), electronic pick and place machines, automatic welders, solderers, and metal benders. couple of industrial automation arms for moving parts from one station to the next....... there's nothing in principle that would prevent us from putting enough printer and other computer driven machines together that are capable of making a complete copy of itself.
it'll just be really big, complex, and probably require human intervention for debugging more often than not.... but at this point, thanks in large part to teh Rep Rap movement it is totally possible in principle.

Well, I may have phrased that poorly. What I think I should have said was: "A machine that can manufacture the parts to produce more of itself". Also, as far back as mid-2009 a RepRap machine produced PCBs that although rudimentary were functional.
The RepRap Snappy probably gets the closest so far:
The RepRap Snappy is able to create 73% of its own parts by volume with a design that eliminates as many of the non 3D printed parts as possible including belts and bearings which are replaced with a rack and pinion system.
The only non self replicating parts on the printer are the motors, electronics, a glass build plate and one 686 bearing, the 3D printed parts take around 150 hours to create.
It is pretty impressive considering it has always been open source and basically made by a bunch of nerds from disparate geographies, in their free time, for "fun".

having owned a okay quality 3D printer that i now plan to slowly upgrade from okay to "pretty damned good"...... yeah I can see how this thing could be a fun hobby...... :-)

To a certain degree, yes. To a larger degree, "the modern movement" was inevitable; all this technology has been around for decades, and "the modern movement" emerged essentially immediately after a few key patents expired and the technology became unencumbered for anyone to use freely. If it hadn't been this guy who came up with a cool idea to popularize it first, it would inevitably have been someone else a few days later.

History that really does deserve to be remembered.

@Polygeekery Random but Not Dumb fact: not coincidentally at all, not far from where she sunk is the Birkenhead Brewery that brews some outstanding beers.

Okay, let's ignore that the guy appears to be a prepper who thinks that he could "bug out" in a homemade tank with no exhaust. He built a freaking tank for $400, with a lot of scavenged materials and time.

Something I just noticed: the YouTube progress bar aligns oh-so-nicely with the X-axis on the video.
I like to think this is done on purpose.

I'm not sure if this is interesting to anyone not familar with Warhammer 40000 at all, but I feel like this is pretty well made even if you don't understand the context. It's a playlist because the author released it in parts; the final, longest part just came out yesterday.

Tom Scott is making ContentID look good:

Or more correctly: copyright law sucks (which the video goes mostly into), ContentId is just the lesser of two evils. Better know the laws and pay upfront, or get lobying.

@Tsaukpaetra Title says "learn how to", but the video never explains the technique involved.

It's much like those other "tutorial videos" where they're just showing Synthesia playing a midi file.

It's very simple.
- Take a coffee mixing stick to your desk.

Neither Random nor Dumb. My favorite indie group has just reposted a bunch of their videos on YouTube. It's what the Eurythmics would be like if they were Japanese, and massive fans of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Sheryl Crow:
