Which promptly became Ben Laden, and the butt of many jokes.I've once had a friend's phone number saved as contact named "Bin Laden" (for no particular reason). During the wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, (which we'd been watching as part of English class), I called him to ask if he could organize a terrorist attack or something. He said he'll go there by train. About an hour later, the wedding transmission got interrupted by breaking news of a passenger train going off rails somewhere in northern France, injuring a couple dozen people.

Coal is basically compressed sunlight. Burning it is basically undoing the photosynthesis done by the plant that became coal.

It would be weird if we didn't have the technology to produce monitors, but still had computers.
Like we could still have numeric and simple text outputs with LEDs. So we could do simulations and banking and stuff, but they wouldn't be a part of everyday life for most people.

We had at least 2 working methods of creating monitors long before we had anything called a "computer". Baird and Farnsworth's televisions. (Baird's was clunky, but it worked.)

@sockpuppet7 said in Random thought of the day:

You need to rewatch it. Not only did all the aircraft/spacecraft in that movie have glass cockpits of a standard design with each display's functions shown as a 3-letter code (very forward-thinking on Kubrick's part-- it must be a lot easier to learn to be a pilot in his world), there are several scenes that shows tablet computers the astronauts can carry around Discovery, at least one of which also shows HAL providing video to it wirelessly:
You seriously don't remember that scene? About the only criticism there you could give is they didn't imagine "soft buttons" and so their tablet has a row of physical buttons on the bottom.
BUT LOOK HOW BIG THE SCREEN ON IT IS! I was just looking for 12" or larger tablets, and it's a wasteland-- that market basically doesn't exist in our reality.
EDIT: also don't forget the circuit tracing computer:

Leviathan: Job 41:1-34

Listening to songs/conversations in languages that are close, but not identical, to ones you speak is quite odd. At least for me, listening to Slavic (including Polish, Croatian, Ukrainian, and several others)-language-family material feels like it's drifting in and out of comprehension. This came up as I was listening to a Croatian song (linked on a linguistics blog I read).
The song in question is
But that's relatively irrelevant.
I talked to a guy for several minutes back when I lived in the Baltics, wondering why I would only get about 1/3 of what he was saying, and that in spurts--one or two phrases would be totally clear (seeming) Russian and then it would lapse into incomprehensibility. Turns out he was speaking Polish.

It's a widely known phenomenon here in Poland. It's also why "Jožin z bažin" was so much more popular in Poland than in Czechia.

I care more about how my car looks than how I look.
Which is only strange until you remember I don't have to look at myself.
Also, "alien" probably got its second meaning as "strange" only because the second meaning of "strange" is "alien".
-
To continue my thought on strange aliens - going by etymology of one and the other, it would make more sense if their main meanings were reversed.
