@kt_ The thing is, I don't know you from Adam, so I don't care about you, and don't know you well enough to value your opinion. Is that clear enough? Also, I don't see why you care so much. Since you don't know me from Adam, either.

As I've said before, Apple only exists in one of two potential states.
- Successful, while operating as Steve Jobs's own private cult of personality
- Lost and adrift without Steve Jobs at the helm
Seeing as how Jobs is dead, it's not hard to guess which state they're in now.

Funny you should say that, since iOS 10 is kinda rad.

@kt_ I always find it funny when people say I have privileged as a white man, I worked at McDonalds when I was 16 and stacked veg at Tesco for 8 years while getting my degree and I an still paying debts from that time (almost over thank god :D). I worked for every single penny I have. My parents just now are comfortable financially.
Thank you for your anecdote.

That's a good start; ignoring rules is a great way to fuck with people and make them angry.

@masonwheeler It doesn't matter when you are huge margins on each sale, while Android phones are a race to the bottom. Market share isn't as meaningful in this circumstance.

My phone (not an iPhone) is so old that it differentiates between SMS and MMS. It's a bit of a pain to text with people with those fancy, new-fangled Android-, i-, and Windows-Phones, because they'll try to toss in a small GIF or emoji graphic, and my phone requires me to download the "picture" in order to see the message (and charges me the higher "media" rate for the twitter-sized message).
There's no such thing as "upgrades" for it, either, unless you count firmware updates (there are none) or the programming required to activate it on a compatible carrier's network.

You can still listen with the old headphones.
All you apple haters are just a little bit a lot too emotional, for my taste.

Or until you lose your phone, for that matter.

@kt_ yeah, so your chances of losing something have just increased by 50%.
There's also the other way round. You buy a phone and use the included headphones. If the phone dies or is unavailable you can still use the headphones to plug in to your computer, a radio, an ipod or anything else you might want to listen to stuff through. You buy an iphone 7 and your headphones are useless in any other device because Lightning is a propitiatory technology

Yes.
Hey, if headphones were permanently attached to your phone there'd be 50% less things you can lose!

Yes.
However, do you really want to plug earphones you got with your phone to something else?
I understand you people, don't think I don't! I understand why jack is a nice thing. I understand why interoperability is a nice thing. On principle.
Meanwhile, in the real world, I don't think I'm gonna suffer because of this. And this is why I'm unmoved. Can't listen while charging? I generally don't listen why charging (maybe happened to me 5 times). Can't plug my new stock earphones into, well... someone else's phone? Cause why the heck would I plug into anywhere else? Laptop? Nah, don't do that either. Desktop? Cable is too short. So: can't plug my stock earphones there? Easy, I'll just keep using my old earphones. Come to think of it, I even lost somewhere my new stock iPhone 6 earphones and am now using those I got with iP4.
So why would I care.
Sure, I get that all those different groups (Android lovers, Apple haters, GNU loving guys, ideologically-minded people) hate on Apple (and their customers; so... me). But it's still to emotional a stance for me, since this whole "proprietary" problem that @masonwheeler tries to scare me with can easily be solved with an adapter.
So yeah, I don't really care. Am I gonna buy iPhone 7? Probably not, I think I'm gonna wait for 7S or 8 before I upgrade, but I'm probably gonna stick with Apple. You see, apart from all this stuff you FUD about, these devices and accompanying software is extremely enjoyable and I'm already heavily invested in it, so why would I changed? I see no practical reason for that.

Ignoring everything else, the apple airpods look so stupid.
Fist, meet face.
Your choice on why they're bad:
- They look like cigarettes hanging from your ears
- It reminds you of people with bluetooths in their ears talking in the middle of the street

I've never used my phone for headphones / set, but I use it with a Square reader to take credit card payments. Of course, there are other peripherals that use the same jack. Good thing Apple knows what people use phones for!

You do know that those accessories still work with the adapter, right? I mean yeah, the Square reader especially might be a bit awkward to use when it's hanging on a cable, but it's not like you'd have to throw it away completely...
-

No. Honestly, I might not even recognize an iPhone if I saw one. But you can usually tell by the person using it.

Me. Lorne Kates. I was actually, for once, about to intentionally UPGRADE A WORKING OS.

Surprised it didn't say:
In order to upgrade, you must buy a new phone. I'll brick this for you now.

@boomzilla Well then, now you know ;).
Personally, while I don't exactly agree with Apple's reasoning for leaving out the audio port, I don't really care either. I've still ordered an iPhone 7, because I only ever use one pair of headphones (and I only use those with my phone) so I'll just leave the adapter connected to those. It's mostly a matter of taste, I think, and honestly, it seems to me like the majority of people complaining about that change are those who wouldn't buy an iPhone anyway
-
@Akko said in Don't Update Your iPhone:

Damn right, I'm complaining. Where apple goes, others follow and I don't want my next phone to have the same bullshit they're foisting on their fans
-
@Jaloopa well that's your prerogative of course. I didn't mean to judge or anything either, but I do think it's an interesting fact (well not exactly "fact", since I have no numbers on that).
And doesn't it say something that others often do what Apple does? It can't only be blind "Apple makes money with it, so we must do the same", can it?
Also, if you're not going to buy an iPhone, and weren't going to buy one anyway, does your complaining mean anything to Apple after all?
-
@Akko said in Don't Update Your iPhone:

It just feels like something one can easily blame for the form-over-function philosophy of phones that has been taking over more and more in recent times.
I guess having Apple as the big bad enemy just helps people feel better.

Probably mostly the same reason I stick with Andriod. Comfort with the ecosystem, knowledge of the UI and money invested in the app store. With Apple there's the added inertia of having other gadgets that no other device will plug into (my wife has a Bose stereo and a bedside alarm clock that house an iphone and are useless to me)

You got that right.
Although, with me it's not even entirely that. I think I've spent less than $20 on App Store/iTunes Store and I don't have other apple gadgets. I'm just extremely happy with the ecosystem and product quality. And all those "shocking changes" don't affect me, I have no reason to get worked up about.

Yeah I guess that is a big part of it. It is definitely a big factor for my decision to go back to iOS after a few non-Apple smartphones...
@kt_ said in Don't Update Your iPhone:

TBH, that is most of what you see all over the internet, so it's easy to come to the conclusion that it is all about that.
@aliceif said in Don't Update Your iPhone:

Probably. Sometimes it is hard to imagine that Apple doesn't purposely create controversy as a marketing strategy though...
-
@kt_ Pretty much the same for me. Most apps I have on my iTunes account are "Free app of the week" deals, and a few 79c apps.
