To anyone that knows what that means, it's actually not that insignificant, especially considering what "noise" is actually constituted of.
A drop in peak noise lets you reduce the amount of EM shielding that you need to separate the CPU and antenna, and that's critical for reducing the weight (or allowing the weight to be spent on battery). I'm pretty sure that some of the techniques that we were looking at at that point are in use now, but I don't know for sure (and the group I was working with at that time are now building an awesome and weird supercomputer for neural network simulations on a massive scale, which is a totally different thing where electrical noise isn't anything anyone cares as much about).

Heck, with neural networks it might even be a good thing!

Depends on the type of simulation. ;)

That's the thing, there'd be a trade off.
Well, yes, obviously. That cuts both ways, though. My point is that the argument of “it wouldn’t fit” doesn’t really fly. But I have this feeling that there would be a lot less complaints about 15 or 30 minutes less charge time, than about not having a jack for the worldwide standard type of headphones.
But I agree with you that it wouldn’t matter to me, or probably to a lot of other users. I don’t need to charge my iPod touch and listen to it at the same time — even if I were in the situation that an iPhone 7 would be my only source of music but it’s charging at the moment, then hey, you won’t die if you can’t listen to music for a few hours, you know?
Personally, I charge my phone while I'm sleeping, so if I can't use wired headphones during that process, um, no biggie? (The fact that I generally listen on Bluetooth phones is neither here nor there. Why BT phones? Because I want to listen to the music, not the audio reproduction, and BT phones don't have wires trailing all over the place.)
-
@Steve_The_Cynic I listen with wired headphones because if I'm listening to music on my phone I have my phone with me, and I don't want to find I can't listen because I forgot to charge my headphones.
It's actually very rare that I charge and listen to music at the same time but it does happen, and I recognise that I don't have the only viable usage pattern when it comes to phone usage

Fair enough. I carry a set of wired headphones because they are light and enable me to listen if I forget to take my wireless ones off the charger, but I normally use the wireless ones if I have them.

I know someone who literally does. Every time we see it at a dog agility show, it's all we can do to keep from rolling in the grass!

Can't listen while charging? I generally don't listen why charging (maybe happened to me 5 times).
A non-irrelevant percentage of people listen to stuff on their phone phones while driving using the headphone jack, including me. And when I played World of Tanks Blitz on my phone/tablet I tended to have it plugged in as well. Remember, the best way to extend the life of your battery is to recharge it during brief periods of the day, rather than waiting until night or whenever to go from 5% to 100%.

@anonymous234 said in Don't Update Your iPhone:
@Jaloopa On the other hand, replacing the headphone jack with a second USB-C connector would be a straight upgrade, since USB-C can transmit analog audio and everything else.
Just glue one of these adapters to every pair of headphones you have to upgrade them.
No thanks. If all you care about is audio, the 3.5mm jack is vastly superior to to the USB-C connector. And I don't want an ugly dongle glued onto headphones/earbuds I might need to use with something other than my phone.

If you really want high-quality audio, connect your new earphones to your phone by WiFi! The higher bit-rate will give you much better sound response!

@dkf keep in mind that apple is advertising to audiophiles here. These are the same people who SWEAR they can hear a difference by 'cleaning' the AC power supply and by reversing their audio cables and suspending them off the ground to 'eliminate interference'. I think any combination of apple's words that end with 'quality audio' will sell

Selective quoting FTW!
Which part of "I want to listen to the music, not the audio reproduction" did you think means I really care about the worse sound? Besides, I listen when I'm out, and when I am out, there's plenty of noise - traffic, wind, the natural noises of the Métro(1) and the trams, all that, which makes choosing because of quality audio reproduction rather more foolish than you think.
(1) Lille, not Paris.

-
-
@Steve_The_Cynic Sure, but there's no reason to pay more for worse quality.
-
@Jaloopa Sure there is. If, for example, quality is not your main goal. If you get what you want (no wires, for example) only with worse quality and a higher price, that might be perfectly reasonable for you. If @Steve_The_Cynic had to choose between two wireless headphones that cost the same, and the only difference is audio quality, I'm sure he'd choose the higher quality ones.
