Maintained with the finger comb. You must be really popular in places like the Eagle and the Lone Star.
(Doesn't matter which city. Most major cities have at least one of them, and they're all bear/leather bars.)

DE shaving is a godsend if you're shaving your whole head. I used to use 2 disgustingly expensive cartridges for a single shave before I discovered that subreddit someone linked above and learned that people still make these razors.
-
-
@Maciejasjmj Not my choice, really - it was either that or going Trump.
-
-
@Maciejasjmj I'm not sure that's a whole lot better than an obvious combover...

Would You Pay $100 For A Razor Blade That Lasts At Least 2 Years?
I've been using my current razor for more than 2 years and replacing the blades normally, and I don't think I've even broken $100.
-
My main problem with shaving DE is that it only seems to take one pass for my lather to dilute so much as to be entirely unusable. Been doing it for... Six years now? Huh.... so you'd think I'd have gotten the hang of it by now but I certainly haven't. So I just end it after one shave and don't have anything approaching as smooth a shave as I'd like. :<
It's probably a function of the soap, but then Van Der Hagen soap is one of the only soaps I can find at a brick and mortar nearby. And that soap feels like it should be good and I'm just not utilizing it effectively. I hate online shopping, but considering soap lasts for a good three-six months for me I suppose it'd be worth trying out any soap recommendations anyone may have.
-
@heterodox I feel like I have this problem as well, but generally can get two passes in without my lather falling apart. Not sure if I'm just not quick enough, or I'm adding too much water or what.
That being said, I've gotten some samples of Stirling's soaps and they smell quite wonderful. The menthol ones are super powerful, like dipping your face in IcyHot
EDIT: Bam, didn't even realize you were asking for products.
If you want to try a cream, I'd recommend Proraso or C.O. Bigelow (same product, different branding)
What brush do you use?

@boomzilla I can't understand from the audio, but managed to google a transcription:
Grampa: We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

I can't really speak to this without knowing your current process, but a common problem is not loading enough soap on the brush.

If you don't mind going online, you can find much better soaps than Van der Hagen. My favorite artisan shops are:
- Stirling
- Black Ship
- Henri et Victoria
- Dr. Jon's
All are are available at Maggard Razor's, with samples available as well.

Texas on Fire is my favorite.

I use a boar brush most frequently as it just seemed to work better for me when I started, but I recently switched to a badger brush without issue.

Mmm, possibly. I spend about 60 seconds loading up soap, but I don't really dig in there. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the problem, though; I'm not a patient person.
-
@heterodox 60s is probably too much soap.

Except then it wouldn't be falling apart. D: Anyway, I feel up to just trying a completely different soap. On the basis of recommendations, I'm thinking Stirling's tea tree; that looks nice.
-
@heterodox Stirling soaps have a reputation for being easy to lather, and can hold a lot of water.

Picked this razor up recently from a guy on/r/Shave_Bazaar/:
http://imgur.com/a/QggH1I recommend checking out that subreddit if you are looking for a razor. Some really good deals on there.
-
I'm back to using a DE razor before work and saving the straight razors for weekends.

Those maggard razors look quite nice. I've thought about picking up one of the vintage straight razors that they offer.
-
@SlackerD I have two of their vintage straights. Both have very nice edges. Brad Maggard (it's a mom-and-pop shop) knows his stuff.

Just noticed that when I read the about me just a moment ago. All the more reason to support them.

I wish we were back on Discourse so I could change this thread title to "The Officious Shaving Masturbation Thread".

I'll stick with my beard trimmer.

I picked up this soap from Cooper and French recently:
https://shop.cooperandfrench.com/products/authentic-barber-shaving-soap-new
Smells great, and does the job, doesn't irritate my skin. We have a winner.
Edit: Rather amusing that the onebox is saying that it is 3.5 USD. It's $18, actually.
-
Also got this as well:

Damn good shave brush. I recommend it.
-
@slackerd You should try their soaps, too. Silky-smooth lather in a wide variety of scents. They also make bath soap and lotion.

I've got some of their soaps. I have the stirling gentleman bar soap. I also have a couple of shaving soap samples that they sent me with orders that I did with them. They are quite nice.
-
@slackerd You have to be careful. If you try everything they have that looks interesting, you could end up with 20 different soaps and aftershaves and it will take you decades to use it all. It happens a lot on r/wicked_edge. They call it Soap Acquisition Disorder, and if they do manage to finish a tub of soap, they post a picture of it there for upvotes.

Indeed. Don't forget Razor Acquisition Disorder. :P

There are guys on /r/wicked_edge who post pictures with an equivalent amount of shave gear.

Amazon review of note:
I've used mine to give my own little Floki a Brazilian IYKWIMAITYD. It handles the underbrush around the Thor-totem, excavates the Great Chasm, and deftly chisels away at the Twins of LavaSpitten. It likewise handles the growth on my Viking Jaw like it was a thresher in Spring wheat, and cleans my finger nails with elan! At the banquet table, I use it with equal ease spreading Nutella on toast, and cutting chunks off of muskox flanks. At this price point it's highly recommended! 4-stars because Lagertha says it gives her little gersnitzelfuekken a bad case of razor burn.
-
@boomzilla
for excess requirements of brain bleach.
-
@boomzilla I don't know if I'd trust a review by a guy who uses the same blade to shave his face and "excavate[] the Great Chasm"
-
@hungrier Well, there's a reason people invented the insult "buttface".
-
@hungrier Hopefully he's not really using it at the pictured angle. He'd be doing more scraping than cutting.
-
I will start doing this soon and report back with how much of my face I scraped off.
