@anotherusername
Did this question really have to be repeated in another thread?
-
Always fun to see someone hit rock bottom, and then gleefully reach for a pickaxe.
-
a programmers team with two ladies... Is such a thing possible?

Since @Onyx doesn't seem to be around:
Rimmer, you already are one glorious hole
-
@Jaloopa wow, that one completely escaped me. As in, the setup, I know what episode the quote is from and everything.
Appreciated, good sir <tips Captain Emerald hat>
-
@Onyx I had to look up the episode, but the quote immediately jumped out at me

You know what that means: you must turn in your Smeghead Card to your nearest JMC facility.

I just watched The Giver the other day. I think you got their use of the word release correctly.
Admittedly, even in context, this particular put-down was a bit obscure; I had to look up the book and film myself to get it, and the person the poster was slapping down was completely lost by it. But, it turns out, it was rather well deserved, seeing how immediately after starting the thread the target deleted the repo for the program he just announced.
Filed Under: I wonder if anyone else here will recognize the context... probably not, most of you have lives.
-
@ScholRLEA as someone who read the book and watched the film, I got the reference.
No clue where the quote came from, though. So there's that.
-
@anotherusername Be glad. The OP's code is eye-bleedingly bad, being sewn together from tutorials and Sewage Overflow posts that he didn't understand and may not actually have read the text of. OK, so he claims to be a kid, but that doesn't really justify it in light of what he's trying to accomplish; I expect that Alex is watching his career with the expectation that he will have his own section in The Daily WTF eventually.

Google it, easy enough to find.

UPDATE: I just found out that Nano-Larva, the programmer in question, has ragequit OSDev again, this time deleting his account. This isn't necessarily a good thing; while he drove everyone in the forum up the wall, he was finally starting to show some signs of learning something from his mistakes, and the fact that he's apparently blaming everyone else for his own mistakes seems like a case of DigiHom Syndrome in the making.
While he won't be the first would-be developer to decide that paranoia works better than hard work (I imagine that this sort of thing goes back to the UNIVAC days, and would probably go back to Babbage's time if he'd actually finished the Difference Engine - hell, some of the historical records sound like Babbage was that way himself) and won't be the last, it is always a sad thing to see.
We really did try to help him, or at least some of us did, but he took everything we said as a personal attack (OK, sometimes they were personal attacks, but he really did seem to court them, claiming that he was nine and refusing to listen to advice and so forth) and in the end I guess he felt that we were ganging up on him.
He won't exactly be missed, but there's definitely a loss of some potential, no matter how small, in this.
Filed Under: And now back to our regularly scheduled lack of context.

Actual quote from a very technical meeting at work:

Strange, I'm gearing up to add this functionality soon, when a player logs out we need to destroy any inventory they spawned into the level to prevent others from "stealing" it.

Only @boomzilla is old enough for that.
-
@pydsigner I posted it and only when I came back did I check the thread title .. doh!
-
@Gąska I am guessing that this was meant in a 'kill all your darlings' sense of not getting fixated your own cleverness. Alan Kay was all over that idea, IIRC. While that phrase (or the similar "murder your children") is often attributed to various famous authors, it seems to have originated in a fin dé siecle writing manual.
Or maybe this your quote was from a story brainstorming session while designing a game. Dunno.

The bloke made me drunk from just fucking breathing.

Discourse is good at degrading. Over time, people, on mobile, battery life, in FF22....

@ScholRLEA That wasn't out of context. Liar.

Actually, it was about improving the way we use threads in our application. You know, make it more RAII.

I mean... if children are going to die, you should at least give the parents the opportunity to say their last goodbyes, right? You owe them this much.

@lucas1 tells his origin story:
The bloke made me drunk from just fucking breathing.

@HardwareGeek said in The word 'microagression' is a microagression.:

In all fairness...it is not any better in context.
