You remind me of Susan Death in governess mode.
Susan is a remarkably practical and level headed individual. I am glad that my practicality can be likened to her pragmatic approach to life.

I looked on Amazon for nail clippers.
The first few results...
-
side cutters
-
Secateurs
-
Hoof trimmers
-
Pocket Knife
-
Dremel
-
Pocket Knife (again)
-
Nailgun
(turns out it defaulted to the DIY category)

At work, payroll and benefits are outsourced to a third party.
A couple of months ago, I get my paycheck for the month and notice the amount is more than it should be. Hey wait a minute . . . . where's the deduction for medical insurance?
Pointy Haired Boss decided that things weren't confusing enough, so benefits administration was outsourced to a different company. I was allegedly sent a letter about this new arrangement, which I never got.
Call the payroll company,
"Sorry, we can't help you, we just deduct the amount that the benefits company tells us."Call the new benefits company,
"Sorry, can't help you, that's a payroll issue".I spend a month making phone calls, dealing with people who seem to be far beyond stupid and incompetent, with each company blaming the other one.. Meanwhile, I'm having to rush to the post office to mail a check covering insurance premiums that are past due.
Everything finally gets sorted out and at the end of January I get a paycheck with the medical insurance premium deducted from it. The wrong amount. Someone transposed two numbers and so they took way too much.
And the dance begins again.

Susan's weapon of choice was a fireplace poker though. Frying pan is more of a Tiffany thing.

Mattermost instant messaging and real-time communications can already be used to replace Workplace private or public groups. Discourse can also help exchange information that can be referenced in the future, and is already used by many, including the CERN market and the ROOT community, as a questions and answers platform.

Eh, when the choice is between Bad and Evil, is the lesser problem.

You're talking to someone who spent a few days coding off their phone at native 1080 resolution on a five inch screen.
Why would you need the instant gratification of coding on your phone? Why not wait until you could get to a normal dev setup?
Because someone mentioned how to do this one cool trick and I had to get it started before I came home, otherwise the build wouldn't be finished before I arrived!
Meh, I just start the build before I leave for work and come back to it when I get home. Problem solved!
But what if someone tells you that cool trick after you started the build?!? How would you fix it before getting home again???!!?
Definitely not by trying to code using my phone.
Well, setting up a build server program is so much harder, good luck getting Jenkins to do it!
I don't even know anyone named Jenkins so I definitely wouldn't try to ask him to do it.
Good idea, he mostly just talks about himself anyway.
Right now, mine's 38 versions behind current release, it's worse than Chrome.

fax museum
I sure wish we had already left this technology behind
We can fax if we want to, we can leave your friends behind
Cause your friends don't fax and if they don't fax
Well they're are no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to a place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
And we can fax.

Calling it Bad, but not on the level of Facebook is "semi-defending"? I mean, relatively speaking, maybe...
Obviously they should've gone with something not-shit instead.

I absolutely love it when I install software downloaded directly from the manufacturer's downloads page and on first opening said software I get a "There's an update available, would you like to download it now?" prompt.
Fuck off. Update your primary downloads page, you retards.

I have an old laptop still running Windows 7. I haven't used it in several months and I'm probably going to buy a new one later this year, so for now, I'll just update Win 7.
Windows Update downloads and installs several hundred megabytes of updates and reboots.
After reboot, Windows Update tells me that there's a new "important" update available. One that wasn't in the batch of updates that I just did.Yes I know, Windows Update is

Oh, only 2 months in that case?
-
One that wasn't in the batch of updates that I just did.
Ah, standard Win7 (and before) behavior. Carry on...
win10 does it sometimes, but not as much as XP and 7 - I always did an (update, rescan)* until the rescan said "you're cool"
-
win10 does it sometimes
with Win10, when that happens it's because the rescan is getting a package that you weren't eleigible before because you hadn't installed an update that needed this update and Windows update could not automatically determine if you would need the second update because depencing on.... well stuff..... the update that would need this update may or may not install the thing that needs this update....
that's the reason with XP and Windoes 7 too. the difference between that and 10 is the package system for 10 is MUCH smarter about that and can almost always determine the full set of updates needed in one pass.
thash ma story ossifer, and 'm stickin toit! -falls over and passes out while trying to walk in a straight line heel to toe-

And you can't detect that and enqueue it to be installed?
The answer seems to be "no", but that's still retarded.

So, next time someone asks me "Why don't you take the time to report the issue?" and continues with "Of course it won't be fixed when nobody wants to report it" I am going to kick them in the nuts so hard their kids will be scared of shoes for life.
Best possible outcome for steam.
- they didn't have to do anything
- you didn't leave the platform
- issue was not escalated
- no more reports from you
Just what they were aiming for.

no more reports from youBut that's the issue here. They never had to do anything. He wasn't going to leave the platform no matter what. And there's no way to escalate the issue.
-
@anonymous234 said in WTF Bites:

There's always a way. In cases like this, it generally involves complaining in public and hoping you can make enough noise to get someone's attention at the company.

Also, if someone has multiple VAC bans and keeps doing the same shit over and over, when do you as a platform owner step in to stop them and punish them for all those ToS violations?
I might be misunderstanding VAC, but how does someone even have multiple bans?
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
It means that VAC doesn't work and should be fixed, no?
Quite.

Anyways, you should check with your dentist. New teeth can be a bad thing (they can push existing teeth and cause problems in the long run).

They're only halfway through the gum, so it's pretty obvious.
And yeah, it's probably a problem. So, let's ignore it and hope it goes away!

Status: Thanks, GitHub Desktop and by extension
git
!
-
@levicki It is the first one,
EXCEPTION_IN_PAGE_ERROR
. And it's description says:The thread tries to access a page that is not present, and the system is unable to load the page. For example, this exception might occur if a network connection is lost while running a program over a network.
That does not seem like a bug in Git, but a bug in the setup. Either running something over network (including accessing git repository directly on a share—that is a bad idea) or I think running out of memory could also do this.
Of course part is Windows being helpful—3221225478 is a system issue, but 3221225477 would be an application issue—and part is GitHub Desktop being helpful (it could at least find the appropriate error message, though this error is pretty rare and any message you might find is probably rather unhelpful anyway. Git itself can't be helpful here as it does not get a chance to do anything about it.
I am not disputing that the message GitHub Desktop actually gives is horrible. It is.

@levicki said in WTF Bites:
If a VAC banned user can connect to supposedly VAC secured server that's a big issue, isn't it?
if the server isn't run by Valve, making revenue for Valve, then they obviously don't care. you are running your own server so obviously it's your responsibility to have the server kick people you don' like.
you could conceivably add a script to your sever that fires once a second and kicks anyone connected to the server that has any VAC bans on their account (active or inactive) and then the cheater can't do much of anything because they get kicked too quickly.....
and if that scripting functionality isn't built in.,.... well you run the server, hook up a script to STDIN and STDOUT of the server and have it puppet the console. it's only got to parse arbitrary text input, it's not like that's a hard problem like computing orbital transfers to accomplish rendezvous for rocketry.
And i know that for a fact, because i
have a job with NASAhave played KSP

I seem to have pasted in a hyperlink to Notepad3. Not a URL that got hyperlinked, but a bona fide hyperlink. Into what is, ostensibly, a plain-text editor, while editing a
.txt
file.I wonder what will happen when I save it. (Update: it scrubbed out the hyperlink, as expected/desired)
Edit: after years of heavy use, this is the first I've had with this editor, so I still recommend it
