But it is not rude to shun people by downvoting them into oblivion because of HOW they say something even when WHAT they are saying is right?
And this is exactly why I was supporting public downvotes so strongly.
Can I chime in for that?
I almost never downvote, except for either 1) that guy who does it habitually, so I might as well, or 2) the rare cases where I strongly dislike the post but don't want to engage, but wouldn't mind my name attached to disagreeing.

Almost everyone here is an asshole according to everyone else. Some people are even assholes according to themselves.
That's why I thought I'd fit right in when I joined.
Sadly, it seems that all those different strains of assholism exhibited here are incompatible with mine.
You also need a decent amout of so that you just can't be arsed to respond to rants.
-
I don't really give that much of a shit about downvotes (outside of the down votes and vote balance topics, natch) but I still maintain they'd be better public. At least someone'd know who and wouldn't need to round accusing anyone of downvoting.
-
Are you guys still bickering? It's been what? 5 days, a week?
-
@Zecc nah. @levicki blocked me so he's now arguing with everyone else and I'm eating popcorn.

@levicki said in WTF Bites:
arguing no. having a flaming row, yeah it would be nice....
And what is the difference between those two when you are doing it with a stubborn idiot who argues with you in bad faith?
Consider that that "stubborn idiot" (who you complain about insulting you, so you might need to be more aware of your phrasing) considers you to be a stubborn idiot, too, and everyone considers the both of you to to be extremely stubborn. Whether the rest considers either or both of you to be idiots probably varies, but the general reaction to the flame-wars are not particularly positive.
i'm not. i'm suggesting you unblock them because it's rude to shun someone
But it is not rude to shun people by downvoting them into oblivion because of HOW they say something even when WHAT they are saying is right?
A post can at the same time contain factually correct information and personal insults, so there's no contradiction there. Besides that, @gąska told you he's not the one downvoting you, so that's moot anyway.
You don't need to block him to disengage in the argument (although I think if you do block him that's your decision to make)
[Deleted before posting because that rant was unkind and not nice. And foxes should be kind and nice. -BZ]
Don't bottle it up -- just go ahead and hit me with everything you've got. After all, I am obviously the only asshole here according to everyone else.
I think people are tired of the way you escalate factual disagreement into personal flamewars where both of you think they're 100% right and refuse to see another perspective. Hint: people here are professional pedants, so there will always be someone who picks up minute details to tell you you're wrong.
And of the complaining, I think people are tired of that too. Make it an IT complaint, not a forum user complaint, and we're with you.Or, as @boomzilla put it more succinctly: YSWATB?

Oh, but I know what you're thinking. Bioshock 2 was released in 2010. It's an old-ish game. Old PC games break on newer Windows releases, that's just a sad fact of life, right?
Except they released "Bioshock 2 Remastered" (same game but with better graphics and minor improvements) in 2016. When Windows 10 was already out.
If they couldn't get the program to run properly on Windows 7, why would you expect it to run any better on Windows 10 (see all the posts here about how much Windows 10 sucks).

which is impressive given one party says they can't even see the posts of the other, and the other party is just kicking back, eating popcorn and laughing as the party of the first part argues with the empty air where they assume the party of the second part is because the party of the first part refuses to admit the presence of the party of the second part but still wants to argue with them.....
can you spell Cognitive Dissonance?

That factor works well for avoiding those walls-o-text too. Both writing them. And reading them.

@levicki said in WTF Bites:
I cannot but wonder why the same does not seem to apply to him?
It does. Some people here think he's also an idiot, based on arguments he's had with other people. The arguments he's had with you are far enough outside my area of expertise that I can't judge who's factually correct. Sometimes his points seem plausible to me, sometimes yours do, and sometimes both. However, often you seem to be the first one to become hostile and resort to insults. That doesn't help you win on either facts or style.
-
You're obviously thinking you're soooo special that you're the only one who warrants the title Chief Asshole around here.
There's lots of competition for that title.
-
Hey, I stopped kicking back already!
I believe "kicking back" was intended in the figurative sense — "putting your feet up on the desk or table, leaning back, and relaxing; chilling" — rather than the more literal "fighting back by kicking."

But only on technical side. The behavior is near identical. For example, both thought I've had a grudge against them personally, and both made a scene out of it. Anyway, yeah, them meeting won't be nice, and there might be casualties.

@levicki said in WTF Bites:
At this point..... I'm going to say that from our perspective...... you may want to look in a mirror.
I post rant-ey WTF bites in hope they will be interesting, and at least a bit funny. What I post is usually fact-checked (there was this case of added sugar, but it can happen to everyone to make a mistake).
If something I post is indeed incorrect I am OK with being called out on my bullshit.
However, he made it a habit to nitpick everything I post regardless of my intent (informative, WTF-ey, joking, clearly labeled as trolling, etc) into tiny little bits, make incorrect assumptions about what I meant to say or outright misunderstand me, and in disagreeing with me make inaccurate or just plain incorrect claims himself.
So when I respond to that because I feel like I have been singled out as his favorite target, I am the asshole who is arguing in bad faith?
If you think so, then maybe you are the one who should look in the mirror.
it's that everyone else that I have observed doesn't get butthurt when they get called out on being an asshole
I haven't seen you call out anyone else except me. Maybe in some threads I don't follow? As I said, I don't mind being called out, as long as everyone gets the same treatment. From my point of view, everyone (inb4: not literally everyone) piles up on me when I defend what I posted even when it is true and it really makes me want to stop posting alltogether. If that's what you people want, I am OK with it. Just let me know, delete my account, and I go to join @blakeyrat while you enjoy patting and high-fiving each other.
Honestly, most people here don't mind the occasional trolling, flaming and name calling. Especially if kept bite sized.
Occasionally a couple of people just rub eachother entirely the wrong way and it ends up being pages upon pages of going back and forth. That usually gets boring for everyone else.Now that you and Gąska have stopped with that, I don't see any reason why people'd want you gone.
It'd be even better if both of you would stop talking about each other like a pair of exes as well. Just sayin.
-

Or at least get a room. (Whips and chains optional.)

@Carnage My rule of thumb is that when people start taking apart other posts at the sentence or phrase level and interpolating their responses that way, it's likely not a conversation I really want to read.
I've been guilty of doing that myself, and it's certainly annoying.

I simply skip over anything people write when they do that. Either reply to my arguments in a complete and coherent text or don't bother. The most I'll do is to quote a single (part of a) sentence I object to - but then it'll be that one(1) bit and not a complete vivisection.
-
It'd be even better if both of you would stop talking about each other like a pair of exes as well.
As I said numerous times, I can't guarantee that. I don't have a habit of looking who I'm replying to.

I don't give much of a rats arse about direct replies.
Not that I care about the talking about each other indirectly either, but it looks a bit silly.And this is gonna be the last thing I say on the matter, because otherwise I'd just be contributing to the silliness myself. People are always welcome to discuss my opinions in DM/PM or whatever it's called around here. Only one person ever sent me one though.

False, it's a lot of work to scroll past those.

have you paid attention to the place? that's 90+% of what goes on here. you're not special, unique, or important enough to warrant special targeting.
actually i take it back, you're unique in your response to it.... but that's not relevant to why your posts are nitpicked. all posts here proporting to be about technical matters can and will be nitpicked by someone.
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
make incorrect assumptions about what I meant to say
we ain't mind readers. we don't know what you meant to say, only what you did say. And intent, much like inflection has a tendency to get lost in text based formats, so what you intend as "lighthearted humour" can be read as "arguing in bad faith" without changing or misunderstanding a single word or phrase of what you said.
@levicki said in WTF Bites:

/shrug
do that if you want.... but what i think we mostly want is for you to just..... you know.... accept that everyone's going to be an asshole here, so being treated like shit is to be expected because that's what assholes do.... deal with shit.
but if you want to leave...... send us a postcard from time to time, 'kay?

ah. sorry. Apparently that was an 'Murican-ism that doesn't translate well across the pond. Yes i did mean it in the sense of "chillaxing" and not "kickboxing".
but hey, learning is fun!
-
chillaxing
That is a "word" I hadn't heard in many years, and I wouldn't be disappointed if I went many more without hearing it again.
-
chillaxing
Contraction of chill and axing, must mean "To chop with an ax in an easygoing way"
-
@TimeBandit "To chop with an axe while in Canada"

-
"chillaxing"
Can we please be careful with the trigger words?
the 90s were that rough to you?
I can try to use 80s slang but i was only 3 when they ended so I might not be able to do it authentically
-
@Vixen That would make you 33 now, which is... um... super old in fox years!
-
the 90s were that rough to you?
No. It was a favoured term of a previous terminally uncool political leader. (The ones since have been worse, but at least haven't tried to be so hip they're little more than a pelvic bone.)

it would, wouldn't it. I think i get the longevity from my human form, which i assume occasionally when i want to interact with humans and not get shot and or chased out of the yard.

But if you're trying to take a body apart in Canada, an axe is a minimum requirement...

@levicki I don't know much about Windows services. But my vague understanding is that requiring black magic is... Not uncommon. Good luck with that. Make sure to turn widdershins, not deosil.

@levicki is µTorrent still a thing? Back when I used it over a decade ago it was tiny (~ 1MB) and fast. No idea about running it as a service though.
