tells me what updates it's going to install
Only if you manage to click on the correct dialog when it first pops up. Otherwise it just does something annoying like an “I'm going to reboot to install something now lol” overlay that interrupts
shooting aliensimportant work and you don't realise what's going on because you were pressing keysto not die embarrassinglyfor important business reasons and didn't see what was going on.And the notes in most of those KB articles are usually pretty shit in my experience. Yes, I know it is an update to a system component. It says so in the fucking name of it. I want to know what is actually involved so I can figure out the real risk in my deployment (probably minimal; I've got a reasonable firewall and I don't use Edge or Outlook so random crap doesn't get in via drive-by attacks).

WTF of my day: So, I told you (and you may even remember!) that we have a lot of those Office365 accounts for my school. As a first step towards making it easier to login, I wanted to move away from the
username@schoolname.onmicrosoft.com
to ausername@sn.de
(wheresn
is both a short and official descriptor for my school). We actually own
sn.de
and from what I read I didn't expect it to be difficult - according to the docs I simply had to prove that I was in control of the domain initially by adding a TXT entry (did that before for one of my private domains where I wanted to use Mailgun).Today was the day where I finally had all the needed ducks in a row and clicked on "Domains" in the Admin portal. Clicked on "Add domain", entered
sn.de
and then ... had to email someone under that domain to add the person behind that email as an administrator?Weird. I mean, it's not as if we were suddenly disabling the
schoolname.onmicrosoft.com
subdomain! But nevermind, did that. Sent an email to one of my own accounts, obviously. After that, the portal explicitly told me to logout (nevermind that it detailed 3 more steps after that). And received an email which told me:
Hello Rhywden, (Your-Long-Ass-Schoolname) uses Microsoft Store for Business for collaboration on projects at schoolname.onmicrosoft.com. Participate as well and add your share of ideas!`
First of all, why is my school name in brackets? Secondly, the text of the email does not remotely relate to the purpose of the email.
Anyways, I clicked on register. Had to choose a password and then I got this:
Not sure what they want there but the next step simply resulted in an obscure error code.

Then I'd guess that either it knows that the IP address belongs to your university, or it knows that people from that IP address are often interested in it.

It wasn't really ever broken. It just thought it was.
-
@anotherusername Given that there are forty subscribers, I'd say about thirty people have ever been interested in it.

Because Lunix distros consider those to be internal components too, they mix the updates in the same place and force you to look at them.
"Mix the updates." That's a funny way to say that they give you a consistent way to update (nearly, anyways, for most people who don't do a lot of weird custom stuff) everything on your system.

Weird, it doesn't update Chrome, Firefox, MySQL Server, etc...

@pie_flavor Which one does?
Please explain to me how I can add my own program to Windows update
-
@TimeBandit I wasn't referring to Windows Update. Simply make your app for UWP, and it will have a centralized update process controlled by the Microsoft Store.

-
Irrelevant, since few people use UWP apps in the first place?

If it were non-obfuscated how to use it, I would totally publish shit on Windows Update. As is, it's still nigh impossible to get back app crashes that Windows claims Microsoft will send me.

A walled garden that you have to commit a whole lot more into than it's worth if the only thing you care about is updates. Compare to dpkg, where you just setup a server wherever and tell people to add it to their repo lists (or do it yourself in the installer).

Not a replacement for Windows Updates, which would be a requirement for having a consistent way to update the software on your system.
Unless it does? Did they finally take my advice and let people use Windows Updates? Are they now getting prosecuted for anti-trust monopoly stuff like everyone always claimed they would if they did this?

One can get Microsoft Team to work in Chrome by lying to them they are running in Edge. I hoped we were past user agent sniffing by now, but I guess its still par for the course for Microsoft.
Also, the “desktop” application is Electron. There is no excuse for it not working on Linux in the first place.
-
@bb36e I'm still disgusted by how the Win10 start menu searches the Internet faster than it searches locally-installed applications, so if you type too fast and hit "Enter" without paying attention, you get a web browser instead of launching the application you wanted.

WTF of my day: So, the status thread contains my experience with the new MacMini. The one which suspends into a black screen.
Well, I just unpacked a replacement unit ... and it does the same thing!
So, I lugged an older monitor around and it turns out that it's the combination of my default monitor and the MacMini is the problem - because, y'see, it's a 21:9 monitor.
The older 16:9 monitor has no problems with suspension. And if I do a full shutdown/reboot cycle, the 21:9 monitor also runs flawlessly. It's just when I resume from suspend that I get the black screen.
What I haven't tried yet: Manually setting a 16:9 resolution and suspending/resuming from that.
Also: The old MacMini from 2011 has no problems with this monitor, aside from the fact that it doesn't support its native resolution. Which the new one does. But only halfway, or so it seems.
-

An anti-incontinencal Christmas tree?

As a non-Dutch speaker, I am constantly amazed at how legible it is...
-
@Rhywden Addendum: If I switch to 1080p suspend and resume works fine.
But then I can't switch back to 3440x1440 without getting a black screen in the process.
And just for shits'n'giggles I exchanged the HDMI cable for another one I know from experience to be 4K capable just to make sure it's not the cable.
