@anotherusername No, if you copy the text and paste it elsewhere, it's obvious that only 3 combining characters were kept.
-
@ben_lubar is that way .

I have a .bat file on a network drive. Used to work fine. Since today I get a security warning
The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?
Yes, I do. I wrote it myself. Where's the fucking option to disable this question?

@dcon I’ll try that tomorrow. But why did it start happening out of nowhere?
Not sure if I’ll blame IT or Microsoft.

Here's a somewhat sorted version (which this time includes every combining character I could find):

Also... my ISO basic Latin javascriptlet apparently thinks that a lot of those are "letter-like" characters...
javascript:for(var s=window.getSelection(),i=s.rangeCount-1,a=Array.apply(0,Array(95)).map((_,i)=>String.fromCharCode(i+32)).sort((a,b)=>a.localeCompare(b)),T=t=>t.normalize('NFKD').replace(/[\u0300-\u036F]/g,'').replace(/\udb40[\udc20-\udc7e]/g,c=>String.fromCharCode(c.charCodeAt(1)&255)).split(/(?![\udc00-\udfff])/).map(c=>a.indexOf(c)>=0||/\s/.test(c)?c:(a[a.map(a=>c.localeCompare(a)).lastIndexOf(1)]||"")[c==c.toLocaleUpperCase()?"toLocaleUpperCase":"toLocaleLowerCase"]()).join(""),p=n=>n.hasChildNodes()?[].forEach.call(n.childNodes,p):n.data&&r.intersectsNode(n)?(n.data=(n==r.startContainer?n==r.endContainer?n.data.slice(0,r.startOffset)+T(n.data.slice(r.startOffset,r.endOffset))+n.data.slice(r.endOffset):n.data.slice(0,r.startOffset)+T(n.data.slice(r.startOffset)):n==r.endContainer?T(n.data.slice(0,r.endOffset))+n.data.slice(r.endOffset):T(n.data))):0,r,j;i>=0;--i){r=s.getRangeAt(i);p(r.commonAncestorContainer);r.commonAncestorContainer.normalize();s.removeRange(r)}
edit: It also converts the 🤦 emoji into a ~ symbol.
(really, it doesn't know what "letter-like" means... the regexp that I wrote to strip out combining marks probably just doesn't include the newly added ranges of code points.)

Do you not have wi-fi? My phone is connected to the wi-fi while I'm asleep.
At that point we didn't, no. Though I still keep mine off it normally to block the ads.
Also, you can set a mobile data cycle and limit in the Android settings (I don't know if iPhones have something similar), and then it'll stop using data when it reaches the cap that you've set. (Wi-fi will still work though.)
Yeah, I know. Generally we have ours set to alert us but not to completely cut it off - since there may be a legitimate need to use it even after reaching the limit. Our policy is to make the kids responsible for their own usage; we pay the plan fee but they have to pay us back for any overages. In my daughter's case it's generally Snapchat that is responsible for the most usage - since apparently just texting your friends isn't cool enough any more.
I have a .bat file on a network drive.
I have one of those too, for business users to run. We'll see if I get any questions about this next time they need it.

You can set the alert level lower, so you get some advance warning. If you have a legitimate need to use it even after reaching the limit, you can always increase or disable the limit.
-
-
@anotherusername Her alert level is indeed set a bit below her actual cap. Plus she gets 50%, 85% and 100% alerts from the telco. A lack of advance warning is not really the issue.
In any case, she seems to have learned fairly well how to manage it; I only occasionally get overage charges for her now, which used to be quite frequent.
-
@Scarlet_Manuka The main advantage of setting the data limit is for the "misbehaving app sucking down gigs of data before you even realize it" scenario. Point being, she still would've woken up to find that her data was used up, but it wouldn't have kept right on going after it capped out and resulted in overage charges. And she could otherwise be just fine at managing her data usage, because it's not a "normal" data usage scenario.
-
@anotherusername That happened to me once and it sucked. I'd just bought a Gear VR and downloaded some 20 - 30 GB of VR games to see what the hubbub was about. During the download, my phone decided to disconnect from my Wi-Fi for no particular reason, and I didn't get an overage alert until the next day. I only have 512 MB of data per month because I'm always on Wi-Fi.
-
@anotherusername There are several combining characters that are actually letters. No, rͭeͪaͤlly.
-
@ender Yeah, but that's not what was happening. Actually those ones were in the Unicode range that my script strips out before it even starts trying to figure out what letter is closest to each character.

If you right click on the Google Chrome system tray icon on Windows, you get these interesting ghost windows in the taskbar from the context menu:

If you have extensions or "Apps that run in the background" (such as Google Drive) you should see a Chrome icon in your system tray.

What the ever-loving fuck?
Doesn't look changed to me....?
Let's see what it "resets" to...
Huh, looks like it hasn't.
-
@Tsaukpaetra
The location where all your important files are stored has "changed". Resetting this to default may resolve some Windows Update issues, would you like to reset this to default?
-
IntelliJ IDEA defaults to having at most 10 files open at once. When 11th is opened, it closes another one at random.
-
@Gąska Are you sure that's the case? I've never observed that behavior. Perhaps there's simply too many tabs to display. Try scrolling the tab bar (shift + scroll wheel).

I actually had thought not dissimilar to this some days ago. I usually have too many windows with too many tabs open at once in Visual Studio, so unless I search or go to definition all the time, I have trouble finding what I wanted to refer to. Badly structured, badly documented project and me having vague idea what is happening at all times is an orthogonal issue. Perhaps one solution could be that that tabs not touched for some length of time (let's say, 1/2 an hour default) and without unsaved content are closed automatically when I open another one.

I feel you, sibling.
CtrlTab, Ctrl-, Ctrl,, CtrlF2, and I still get lost.

runs to check whether perhaps there is already such option amidst tens of hundreds of options in Visual Studio and will not be surprised if there actually is
Edit: There isn't. Or sucks at finding things. Which is very possible given the original issue.

It works perfectly for just like Discourse and Windows Updates.

Not sure if I’ll blame IT or Microsoft.
Sounds like a policy change.
I asked IT to solve this and they were all like "Huh, that's weird, we haven't changed anything."
Well, whatever they did or didn't change, they changed it back and now it works again.
-
Also WhyTF can there only be one "Find Symbol Results" panel and 2 "Find Results" panels? WTF.
Also and especially since VS takes ages to populate the "find symbol results", why doesn't it keep an history of previous searches?
(QtCreator manages to both have a symbol search that takes a tenth of VS time or maybe even less than that, and to keep previous results so you can e.g. flick easily between searches for related symbols)

@topspin
How do your system administrators rank on the BOFHs scale?

@Applied-Mediocrity Best described as "don't attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence"

IntelliJ IDEA defaults to having at most 10 files open at once. When 11th is opened, it closes another one at random.
This can be solved by using Eclipse, which will run out of memory before having enough tabs it needs to close one.

Can't you just try/catch it instead of asking the user a question they can't answer? That is the point of exceptions after all.
Is OOM special in that way that it would make the system unstable? (honest question, Java has been over a decade for me)
