@Onyx I actually like the minimalist panel too. I don't tend to run oodles of windows, and the only thing I tend to multi-desktop is my music player (but I do have 2 physical monitors).
I like the combination task view/app search, though I miss the categorized app overview from the earlier gnome shell versions, and I wouldn't mind having windows' pinned tasks.
And indeed many of the gnome apps are over-streamlined at the cost of features.
On windows I've got the task bar on top, and I frequently have to correct 'no, the shutdown button is under the top left menu not the top right one'. And speaking of that, windows' action center has the bad property of opening on the primary monitor, rather than the monitor containing the action menu button. I have those distinct because games tend to insist on the primary monitor and I want to keep the primary task bar visible.

In my family, my parents frequently use each other's car for various reasons and often have to re-adjust the seat, mirrors, and radio to suit their preferences. Cars aren't really designed to streamline multiple users anyway.
There are high-end cars where those settings are adjusted electronically, and separate settings are kept for each key.
Well, in computer world there's OS X. And KDE.

What if you weren't there
This morning when I logged onto my PC, it popped up a window asking if I wanted to reboot now or wait until a time I wasn't using the PC. It suggested shortly after I leave for work. I said sure, and when I got home, the machine had rebooted and was waiting for me to log on again.

This was my question when I attempted to update my phone and it corrupted the flash so badly it lost the Modem's NVRAM partition (which normally isn't touched by any installers, and in fact, can't be recovered from using tools like ODIN).

It won't reboot until "outside regular hours" or whatever the screenshot above said. That might be all day long. Typically I've seen that when I come in in the morning or back after lunch or something. Note that would give you 5-8 hours notice.

I get it but I still don't like it. I want my system to update when it's convenient to me and that's that. Last night I had to wait for 15 minutes before going to sleep for my computer to shut down properly because there were updates. It sometimes happens to me that my home machine becomes quite unresponsive because Windows decided it'd install updates in that particular moment. I don't like it. I don't like my computer acting unexpected on me and I don't have the time to update my home machine every Tuesday.
I know, I know, security breaches. But let's be honest, how many people you know (from outside of work) who got haxxxxiored? I don't browse porn, I've an antivirus and besides that: I shouldn't have to explain myself to a fucking OS.

Given that you can turn them off in W10 Pro but not in W10 Home, that would appear to be MS's position as well.

@kt_ at the risk of sounding like an elitist asshat, your using an operating system that's meant to be used by the average/lowest common PC user. So their use cases take precedence over yours

When there is a windows update, there is no time to stand there shooting aliens. It doesn't matter if you are behind a good firewall, with an up-to-date anti-virus, that you are not browsing the big-bad internet or even sending/receiving emails.
Apply and reboot asap, security is the ONLY concern here, you and your damned need can go to hell.
At least, that's what I've been told.
-
@TimeBandit Quite right too. There are international agreements that constrain the Russian mafia to deploying new zero-day exploits only after the MS patch to block them has been released. That's why they're not called minus-350-day exploits.

They could allow for turning it off in the Professional edition.
On the other hand, I feel for all those Windows 10 Home owners who get an auto update during an important presentation.
Yeah, I know, they had it coming.

Just modify the HOSTS file to redirect Windows Update Service URIs to 127.0.0.1. Windows will complain that HOSTS was modified and could be the result of a virus, but once you work out how to dismiss/override that you'll be fine. It's not the most elegant solution, but it provides a permanent solution if you never want updating.

I'm wondering if you could set local group policy (or whatever it is for home users) to say you have a WSUS server at localhost, it should have the same effect, right? And you wouldn't need to screw with Windows complaining about the hosts file ...

Is this windows 10 update a global thing? Support people here told me win 10 isn't free at all for win7 and win8 users, and that nothing like that is happening.

If you refuse to sign in with a Microsoft account, all you have to deal with is a nag window telling you there's a problem with your Insider updates.

Pfft. No, I don't care that much for Microsoft's update schedule, I've better things to do. All I know is, sometimes my machine slows down unexpectedly for what it turns out is to install updates (last time -- Sunday -- it was during a quite important thing I was doing and I hated it for that).
Look, technical stuff's not important here. What's important is usability and the fact that a user has to adhere to a fucking operating system instead of the other way. It might not be such a problem outright, I mean I know that Windows gives "warnings", but that's not enough. It breaks our workflow. It doesn't matter that Windows can be cheated -- it's prone to errors (this shit could be patched) and it doesn't change the fact that the UX is all wrong.
Why don't I know how often I've to restart? Because I don't fucking care. Honestly. Why should I? On W7 I updated quite regularly, sometimes more often than 2 time per month, sometimes 1 time per two months. And I didn't have to fight with my OS because it steals my resources.
I don't understand how can it be so hard for you to understand that. Am I from a fucking moon or something? Do I speak fucking fish-language or something?
