because of my religion, I believe that homosexuality is a sin.
You're fine thinking homesexuality, drinking, smoking, and wearing white after Labor day are sins. You're fine to abstain from those things. You would not be fine to call a gay person a sinner, unless she or he specifically solicited your moral/religious opinion on the matter.
Are you sure? Simply because of my religion, I have repeatedly been called homophobic and transphobic. It's never on this forum (except by an asshole who thought it was funk to harass me while drunk), but with this new policy I have no idea what to expect.
Think whatever you want. The second you antagonize, dismiss, or otherwise mistreat someone on the basis of who or what they are, you are wrong. Period.
In short, DON'T BE A DICK. It really isn't hard, unless you're a dick.
Man, I didn't even have to ask Ben, because I haven't been so far up this forum's ass I still remember what polite society looks like.

That's part of the concern a lot of people have expressed. This forum has a long history of tolerating people who are just being dicks. One person suddenly changing that feels like a dictatorial move.
-
@abarker like, anyone remembers those epic Morbs v. Other People fights from late 00s? Those were EPIC. Purple dildos were flying left and right. I rarely ever lasted more than two pages, it was just so heated and needlessly spiteful. Signature Guy didn't help (and SG itself was the very definition of what being a dick is all on its own. Especially the one mocking Blakey.)

@Benjamin-Hall I already told you those tactics won't work. You can stop using them.
@ben_lubar said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
Look, I told all of you that the alt-right playbook wouldn't work here.
You can stop trying to make it work.
@ben_lubar said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
I literally just told you that wouldn't work.
Yeah, fuck this.

you can absolutely be an asshole
I'm getting mixed signals. Could the moderation team work out a consensus, and only then announce the new rules?
-
-
@ben_lubar if I understand correctly, antagonization, dismissal and otherwise mistreatment is allowed as long as it's not on the basis of who or what they are?
-
@Gąska that's correct
we're a tech forum
we laugh at mistakes people make
we don't call people mistakes
-
@ben_lubar hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, something seems to be missing here?
Why, whatever could it be?
-
@Polygeekery I have resigned as administrator because the other administrators of this forum would rather side with someone making death threats towards me than "upset the decorum" or some other nonsense.

I am disappointed you feel this way (and note that I'm not calling you names or slandering your character), but I do believe you need to take a really hard and long look at what happened these last few days and ponder what you could have done differently and/or better.

All trolling aside, if you look at this as anything other than an unsanctioned coup and insurrection that is completely countercurrent to what these forums have stood for, you need to step away from all moderating duties on the Fediverse also. Dealing with the Gab folks has twisted and warped you and you need a break and some introspection.
Your actions were completely unacceptable. You did not involve Alex at all. You shit all over the group as a whole. You burned a lot of bridges and it's my opinion that your actions absolutely should warrant a permanent ban from the forums.
But that is not my decision to make.
-
@Polygeekery A permanent ban for being a total dick? Wow, for a second you sounded like Ben there.
-
@pie_flavor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Oh, this went way beyond that. It was a total mental break in to @Fox territory, but with admin privileges. @Fox got banned.
-
@Polygeekery well, to wear the devil's advocate hat for a little bit longer, Fox got banned for breaking the cardinal rule of no spam: he very repeatedly posted a thread where it kept getting moved away from. He did not, in point of fact, get banned for being a complete lunatic douche.
-
I wasn't planning on returning, at all, but I've been following this thread, not logged in, first to find out what the hell happened, then to see how the situation developed. With this evening's changes, I don't have a reason to stay away.

I don't have a problem with you continuing to be an admin, babysitting the database, handling software updates, and so on. You do that well (apart from the notorious lack of up-to-date backups that one time).
However, you should not be performing any moderation functions (other than, perhaps, dealing with obvious spambots). You lack the interpersonal skills required for that. You have a history of communicating in a way that other people have difficulty understanding. As other people have said, a moderator needs to be articulate clearly a specific reason for a moderation action, especially one as severe as a ban. This incident has demonstrated your inability to do that.
That said, I look forward to your continued participation in the forum. I admit I have been extremely and irrationally angry with you for the last couple of days, but I have calmed down now and harbor no ill will towards you. I don't know what's happened recently, but you used to be a fun and active participant in the forum. I'd welcome continued interaction with the really weird but fun Ben who posted DF screenshots and talked incessantly about lojban. Not that I would welcome the screenshots and lojban, but I'd welcome the fun Ben who posted them.
BTW,
Tlooks at the time — YIL that one of the conditions I have is considered neurodiverse. Yay, a label, I guess. Also, sucks when you're not logged in. Really sucks diseased animal genitalia.

Yeah. It would remember I have a place in threads, but always take me to the first post regardless. Really weird...
-
@Tsaukpaetra It can't even consistently go to the right post when you are logged in. It's hopeless when you're not.
And pagination. I've gotten so used to the abomination of infiniscroll that it feels really awkward to go back to a paginated format.

Yeah, I kept deadlocking myself at the end of a page thinking it would load more posts. Really odd experience.

Be free to think whatever you want to think!Be careful to express that, or really anything at all (your favorite breakfast?), around where the new dictatorship can see it though. My recent ban was just commenting in the vicinity.
Oh wait, things have changed to normal again? Then there should be no problem.@abarker said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

Here, now it is.
I won't repeat it though, it has no business here.
While the post above is my honest belief, I realize it's perfectly off-topic and doesn't belong here. However, I feel like I got one post that deserves a ban free, so here goes. I'll leave it at that though.
-
@HardwareGeek Yeah, agreed with everything you said.
Especially about NodeBB being shit when you're not logged in. By Jove, it's so shit. I had to just keep the thread open in a tab and hit refresh once in a while.

HARD, HARD disagree with this.
@ben_lubar, I hope you don't leave the community over this. I don't want anyone banned except obvious spammers and I'd appreciate hearing your point of view on things.
That said, you went rogue and broke Alex's trust. You also conspired against forum users and attacked them off site. I was ready to request a full account deletion because I was worried that the next step was that you were going to dox me.
I don't trust you with my non-public information. I hope you can understand why.
Can you confirm whether you have backend access to the database still? Because if you do, I might be leaving the forum anyway.

The interface has just gone completely haywire the last few days. The forced 60% minimum sizing, zen mode being broken by not being full screen, and now mobile is popping up 30 unfinished drafts every time I hit any topic.

To everyone accusing me of calling people nazi sympathizers:
I never did that.
I posted that using the tactics that neo-nazis (whom I have banned a lot of on the fediverse) try to use to muddy the waters will not work here.
If you're angry that I'm pointing out that tactics you want to use are the same tactics neo-nazis use when they're cornered, that's a sign that you should examine your tactics more closely.
But what tactics? I really don't know. That's a 100 percent serious question. I think I must be less familiar with neo-nazis than you are. Can you see how bringing them into a discussion where they have no place would upset people?
A common tactic they use is trying to establish a definite boundary between acceptable and unacceptable behavior so that they can brush up against the limit and accuse anyone who punishes their repeated bad behavior of overreacting.
That's hardly a defining or exclusive trait of neo-Nazis, though!

Who isn't at least somewhat autistic around here? I'm completely serious right now, for once in my life.
This is a forum centered around information technology, populated by people who are so much into computers they seek out forums specifically about IT. Everyone here is deep into the ol' spectrum.
Let's not perpetuate obnoxious stereotypes please...

Agreed. But someone started calling people neo-nazis very publicly.
I'm not accusing you of anything, but your behavior so far today has matched exactly what my experience of dealing with neo-nazis in the fediverse has taught me to look out for.

@error Autism Speaks treats autism as a disease, and has the intention of "wiping out" autism, which is, by definition, eugenics.
The fact that you're articulate enough to write this proves that you're very much one of the lucky ones. I have an autistic brother-in-law who's deep enough into the spectrum that he's not capable of living independently, and he's still considered a relatively mild case! For the vast majority of people with autism, it most definitely is a disease to be wiped out, which means "cured", not "killed."
Comparing fixing a debilitating mental disease to eugenics is just in the highest degree!

I went to school (7-12th) with a kid born almost completely deaf. There is a similar feeling in parts of that community. He got a lot of hate from people in that community when he got cochlear implants in high school.

On desktop it used to go into full screen mode with just your post and preview visible. Now sometimes it goes to 100% size but shifts about 40% upward. I never use it on mobile, mostly because A) posting is full screen by default and B) hit detection is so bad. Everything is always shifted around 25 pixels in some direction because DIVs are the devil.
I don't know where people are getting 40% minimum from either. Attached is clearly
60%70% minimum.

It makes some sense. People feel like they're being attacked personally.
-
@boomzilla Deaf Person A ("Fred") feels like Deaf Person B ("Jim") getting implants for himself (Jim) is a personal attack on Fred?
Like I said, of the highest order. Anyone who considers me trying to better myself and improve my lot in life as a personal attack against them, (unless it actually is one, if they are specifically and maliciously obstructing my self-improvement,) is just messed up in the head.
-
@Mason_Wheeler The problem is that the capital-D Deaf community sees being deaf as a culture and not a disability.
You see the same thing with people who strongly identify with a racial group disliking people dating outside that racial group.
Or religious people not wanting people to date outside their religion.
I remember a time when some organization was running a Super Bowl ad that praised Alexander Graham Bell, and the (large) Deaf organizations at my school threatened boycotts.
You also hear stories every so often about capital-D Deaf couples finding out that they're going to have a hearing child, so they get an abortion and try again.

People build their identities around the weirdest things and if you try to "fix" that, there will be push back. I can understand that to some degree, even though I might disagree with the specifics.
Just as a thought-experiment: I think an outsider could view WTDWTF the same way. Why is being an asshole tolerated here? Why not fix that? Wouldn't the place be much nicer if there were rules, and everybody had to play nice, and so on, and people would focus on just making fun of IT/tech/etc? For us/an insider, that would on the other hand be an attack on some of the core things that make WTDWTF WTDWTF. There might be some disagreement on the specifics (e.g., where the line goes and so on), but I doubt anybody here disagrees with that at the core.
-
@GuyWhoKilledBear
Also, by getting implants you're leaving the group through your own decision. That makes you a traitor.
