Another SJW hoax.

Guy claims Whole Foods wrote "Love Wins, fag!" on his cake, sues. WF turns up the security camera of him buying the cake, which, compared to his video, shows he must have altered it himself.
In the US, a "public figure" like a store chain has a high hurdle to win a libel or slander claim, because they have to prove "actual malice". Hard to see this as anything but that.
-
Well that would be an interesting deposition to sit in on. Funny enough, depositions are very "unsafe"-spaces for all parties involved.
-
I don't see the 'SJW' part of this...just someone being lawsuit-y
-
"This video has been removed by the uploader"
Great video.

What do you expect? Now that he's been caught lying, he's going to try to cover up the evidence.
It won't help. You can bet Whole Foods' laywers have a copy.

There's been quite a few cases of people who, damn it, just can't find the bigotry they know is out there, so they fake an incident. He's doing it for all the right reasons, to help gay people against the evil bigots that American society is chock-full of. It's not his fault if he has to fake a hate crime because nobody around him will commit a real one.
I mean, it is, but you'll never convince him of that.
-
@FrostCat if I read the article correctly, the video was supposedly a security camera that proved Whole Foods didn't write a third word on the cake.
-
@ben_lubar I thought you meant the liar's video. As for WF's, E_NO_REPRO:
The video purports--I didn't watch it all, but am going on others' description of it--to show him buying the cake, and showing differences in his video. For example, he claims he didn't open it in the store, but in the store's video, the bar code sticker is on top of the box, but in his, it's on the side. Also, apparently the box changes color between the time he bought it and the time he recorded his video, as if he replaced the top with another one.
Now, some may discount this, but I don't know anyone who ever bought a personalized cake that didn't look at it before buying it, because you'd be stupid not to, not because of what he claims happened, but because people make mistakes, and it might have your message misspelled, which could cause problems if, say, it's for your four-year-old daughter, and they spelled her name wrong.

First off, "her" is the proper pronoun for "a four-year old [girl]". Second, QED.

While that is correct, my image is for the birthday of a 38-year-old man.

@ben_lubar Ben, perhaps you didn't notice that you had two distinct quotes in your post, and that I was addressing the first one. I know Tarn's not a four-year-old girl.
-
@FrostCat said in Another SJW hoax.:

I was not aware of this. I looked and I am still not aware of this.
-
@ben_lubar First you quoted me, then you quoted Bay12Games via twitter. Are you not speaking English or something?
-
@FrostCat I posted a link to a tweet. There is no second quote.
-
@FrostCat Dude, he was just showing an example of a misspelling, apparently. Though it's not clear.
The picture could either be a guacamole worthy hate crime or just for some Vietnamese dude for all I know. Or maybe they just don't like chocolate icing. It's difficult to tell with @ben_lubar.

Could be, but fake hate crimes have been pretty popular for the last few years, at least. As @mott555's post exemplifies.

Fake crimes, in general. Case in point. Part of my job is running what's effectively an amusement park ride. Duration of ride 5 minutes. So, guy turns up, asks "Can you look after my rucksack for me while I do the ride". Sure, 'course I can. 5 minutes later, comes back and claims that there's 300 euros missing from his bag, and what am I going to do about it. Insinuation being that I've been through his bag and nicked his money. So I call the police, and my boss, while the guy is getting all righteously agitated and saying he's going to sue the resort.
Once my boss, the director of the resort, and the police have all turned up, and the guy has finished screaming blue murder and demanding that I be searched, I point out the fact that the entire departure area is covered by video surveillance camera, pull up the recordings and show that I haven't touched his bag except to place it on the floor and then again to give it back, and that he's obviously "lost" his 300 euros elsewhere.
Goal, as far as I can tell, was to embarrass the resort into giving him some sort of payoff, and to hell with the fact it would get me sacked.
-
@tufty said in Another SJW hoax.:

Could be, though I suspect that sort of thing has been going on a lot longer and is really a lot more common than the fake hate crime, which has really gained prominence much more recently, at least in the US.
-
@boomzilla Fake hate crime is probably easier to pull off, and almost certainly far more embarrassing for the "mark". Hell, you don't need to threaten legal action, all it's gonna take is a mention of being deeply, profoundly shocked, I'll be posting this on Farcebook / Twatter and making sure everyone knows what absolute fucking nazis you are / employ / condone etc... Low hanging fruit, innit.
-
@boomzilla I'm pretty sure that's the Dwarf Fortress dude, whose name is Tarn.
Of course, I know way more people named Tran (hell, I know a Tran Tran) than I know Tarns.
-
@tufty 300 euros. About right for a day at the amusement park between tickets and overpriced meals and beverages.
-
@Weng Ski resort in this case, but yeah.
-
@tufty so add equipment rentals.

These sorts of things have more commonly been false flag sorts of operations done anonymously (graffiti, threatening online comments, etc). Probably because stuff like this guy (in the OP) is too easy to get caught personally.
-
@FrostCat [sigh]
I love it when people fuck up the cause

yes, but also, as someone already mentioned, it was the guy who wrote DF (you can tell by the twitter handle Bay12Games.)
-
@FrostCat said in Another SJW hoax.:

Maybe you can. Bay12Games meant nothing to me. I'll probably remember that it's a DF thing for the next 12 minutes and then it will be gone, like random shit my wife tells me, because who cares?
-
@FrostCat (lol) Like this
-
Interesting, because I've been to Whole Foods, and they are very "inclusive".
Goes to show that identity politics has created a climate where no one can win, no matter how much they try to appease.
Well, this is only going to serve to making it harder for a homosexual to be believed in court when they say they were discriminated against. Ironic that it's motivated by someone that wants to prove that discrimination exists.
Why the hell Whole Foods though?
-
@xaade said in Another SJW hoax.:
Interesting, because I've been to Whole Foods, and they are very "inclusive".
Yup--another thing commenters have pointed out is that, first off, the idea that this would happen at Whole Foods is unlikely, and when we're talking a Whole Foods in Austin, well.
-
And he doesn't have the foresight to predict what crying wolf will do?
I've moved away from being casually dismissive, into straight up pissed off, because while I don't make it out like the whole world is bigoted and that every form of bigotry is evil (it's fine to be bigoted against a racist culture), I do actually have gay friends and family, and this only makes it harder for them under the guise of "exposing a problem".
Faux protesting is the bane of every issue needing support.
-
@xaade said in Another SJW hoax.:
And he doesn't have the foresight to predict what crying wolf will do?
Obviously not, or he wouldn't have done it. Unless he secretly hated gay people.
But there's a lot[1] of people out there doing this same exact thing: perpetrating hoaxes.
[1] not in absolute numbers, but it doesn't take more than a few people a year drawing swastikas on themselves or drawing nooses on their front doors to cause problems for the people they're supposedly trying to help.
-
He repeatedly says his story is bulletproof and not at all a cake hoax because the sticker on the cake box is intact. And, to be fair, that was good enough for some commenters on news sites. But I’ll just post a random sampling of comments from sarcastic friends of mine:
- “Y’all, he never broke the seal! Cake boxes are impenetrable. I keep all my valuables in an old cake box * with some tape over the original price tag.”
- “When I leave home, I actually leave a cake seal across the door so I can tell if anybody entered the premises during my absence. It’s foolproof.”
- “Fort Knox is actually protected by a 3 tier cake seal system. Impenetrable.”
- “But if the seal is slit, you must acquit!”
- “FIRE CAN’T MELT SEAL”
The most ridiculous thing here is that he claimed he didn't notice it until he got into his car.
-

Yeah, I read an article from a guy that generally wanted to
tow the linetoe the line (thanks Boomzilla). Then they got into a situation where they needed to "apologize", but no amount of appeasement would work, and it just got worse for them. Even after apologizing and trying to change, they wanted this person to completely shut down, like some kind of warning shot to everyone else. And the situation was rather trivial.
I wish I could remember exactly what happened. But the conclusion of the article / Moral of the story.
"Fuck em. Fuck em all. Don't give one apology. Not to them."
I mean, I look at some of this stuff, and it's just.... Well, that could be reduced to a general... "Don't be rude"... and then move on. But they've made the slightest offense into a terrible sin, unless you fall completely for their mental framework, and then you can be as rude as you want. You can even break your own rules. They rarely hold themselves to their own standards, because it's completely impossible, and that's the point. The point is to have a soapbox where you can humiliate everyone from, because it gives you power over people.
And I'm sorry, but that just makes you into the worst kind of person, the most rude kind of person.
It's funny how similar this stuff is to Puritan or Victorian era Christianity. It's basically Parochial...
It's become a religion, that no one really follows, just so they can abuse other people with it.
But hey, when you're actin a fool, you often become the very things you hate.
-

Ironic. I originally typed that. Then I thought, "what the hell does a toe have to do with keeping in check. The line is a guideline, so dragging it along makes more sense."
And that's how we end up with "for all intensive purposes"....
Now I realize that it probably means keeping your toe on the right side of the line...
Stupid English.
-
@xaade not exactly... it means putting your toes in the exact same line as all the other toes because it's your duty as a soldier/citizen/person/whatever.
