And THIS kind of BS is EXACTLY why I have NoScript ON by default, EVERYWHERE

Last time I tried it was not appreciated, because the resident code monkeys did not understand packages and objects.
That's not very surprising. If they knew about sensible language features, they wouldn't be using Perl.

the website only works if all of its analytics and advertising crap has loaded.
Well, it is not unlikely that a website is explicitly designed in such a way that you can only use it as long as you don't try to undermine its business model.
If the business model is analytics and advertising crap, then undermining that business model is the only way I will use the site.
-
The right thing would then be not to use such sites at all, because if everyone would act like you, such sites couldn't exist so you couldn't use them in that situation anyways.
-
If people want to disable Javascript, that's their choice. Just don't then do the next thing that most noscripters move on to, which is moan about how some website doesn't work when they've turned off an integral part of what makes it work.
To use a car analogy, if I take the battery out of my car because acid is dangerous, I have no right to complain that my headlights don't work and I have to bump start it every time I want to go anywhere.
I'd rather try to avoid renting a car (which is a better analogy to websites than owning one) that uses its battery to continuously play a radio station that doesn't share my taste of music, show off the flashy color-changing leg room illumination, automatically honk the horn for me whenever someone before me stands more than 2 secs in front of a green light, etc.
And if too many rented cars would have such "features", I'd disconnect (not take out) the battery and connect one load after the other until I've found a combination near the optimum according to my preferences.

basic fucking usability

Should cars be usable by people without arms to cater to people who decide they want to drive in a straight jacket?
Why not?
(Pity that only the German version mentions that some of them actually were foot-steered.)

I am fortunate to be dealing with users who:
- Don't turn JS off. Ever.
- Use modern browsers.
- Are not dealing with Google Analytics, trackers or ads, because our stuff doesn't have these things.
I have a nicer life because of it.

Neat, you found the Discourse source code.

Fine. That's your choice. But you accept that certain other essential functions require the battery and font bitch at the manufacturer when your radio doesn't work at all
-
Nah, that makes more sense than DiscoRubyEmberDocker.

eval()
is a level of stupid beyond all others; why that was ever part of the language, I'll never understand. If Javascript didn't have an
eval
function, someone would have been obligated to make one, in Javascript, and it would have been 10x less efficient.
-
Only 10x?

Actually, I think perl was the right tool for that job, which was taking a data file in some format and loading it into a database. Many of them were various ad-hoc fixed width or delimiter separated files that a bunch of regular expressions did a great job with and for the rest the collection of libraries on CPAN was unparalleled back then (it's been 10 years). E.g. one of the files I had to deal with was .xls and there were not many libraries to deal with that, but perl had one. And it had decent database interface for the other end.
All the logic concerning invariants was (reasonably) implemented in stored procedures and the client application for the clerks to work with the data were in Java, but writing this kind of import scripts in Java would take longer and gain absolutely nothing. It was just that it was, as relatively simple task, given to the less capable programmers. I was just loaned to the department for a couple of months between projects because I happened to have good grasp of perl and I turned out to have much better grasp of it than the people there.

I wrote exactly one Perl script in my life so far. It was used to parse some convoluted logging output into something machine-readable. I have to admit that Perl is a reasonable tool for parsing and creating text files.
-
I wrote quite a lot of perl in its time. It used to be pretty much the only scripting language that was widely available and had good selection of libraries. These days I mostly go to python, but back in 2005 it was just starting to be practical.
-
I don't have time for your bullshit. Now fuck off.

The Discourse source code isn't that readable.

So, you made me check the raw to see if this was some kind of bug, and upon finding that it was not, I immediately started wondering if there's a way to break displaying raw...

In the case of my company, we successfully persuade our manager to drop support for IE7/8 because jQuery will no longer support them, and for those still using WinXP, they can move to Chrome/Firefox.
My previous company decided - a little before I joined - to drop support for IE8. While they themselves still had everyone using XP. When we released the first bit of the new site they had to urgently roll out Chrome to everyone in sales.

Meanwhile, here's a web page:

Yes, it's quite the practical extraction and report language.

Would there be any choice of language that would NOT be raisinable?

Yes, you might not want to randomly necro a thread, but Discourse makes sure you do anyway.

Because Discourse told me it was OK! In fact, 500 times OK!
