The distiller's edition was not even the same whiskey
Oh, yeah, the link you posted mentions a sherry cash finish, which the standard Oban doesn't have; I only saw that now. I can imagine that this significantly changes the flavor. So, in this case, the distiller's edition is actually different.

True. Michigan has minimum prices for liquor.

Over the Xmas break, I went through a gift/sampler set of Glenmorangie single malts.
http://i.imgur.com/ZBmIUkQ.jpg
There's four 10CL, cask-strength bottles from different lines:
- The Original
- Quinta Ruban Port Cask Finish
- Nectar D'or
- Lasanta Sherry Cask Finish
The set was about $60CAD for the four bottles, which is an excellent price, and the perfect way to try some otherwise expensive whiskeys. Each of these would be a ~$80CAD 750ml bottle, which is a lot to lay out to "just try". I really hope other whiskey makers come out with discovery packs like this.
The Original
I started with the basic. A nice whiskey. It has the standard harshness you'd expect from a whiskey. Not much of a finish or flavor. A good introduction to single malt, but not one I can see myself buying.
Quinta Ruban
Way better than The Original. Still has a slightly harsh start, but smooth finish. You can taste the heavy, dark, woody flavor they were going for. The finish doesn't last long, but is definitely bolder and more pronounced than other whiskeys I've tried. If you enjoy a woody flavor, this one's for you.
Nectar D'Or
Lives up to it's golden name. Although it has the same sharp, harsh sting at first, that quickly gives way to a very smooth and silken flavor. There is a hint of sweetness. Nice finish that slowly fades away. It's like they took everything wrong with The Original, and fixed it. I would buy a larger bottle of this.
Lasanta Sherry Cask Finish
Not going to lie-- this was of absolute favorite of the bunch. And it's probably now my second favorite whiskey I've tried, right behind the pepper-y 12 year old Glenfiddich.
They aren't kidding when they say this is a sherry cask finish. The sweet woody notes are VERY pronounced, giving this one a carmel flavor. Not just "I'm describing this as carmel because of snobby snob snob" but literal, rich, melted-butter-and-sugar caramel notes. It's wonderful. My only regret is that the finish is so short, that wonderful flavor doesn't linger anywhere near long enough. Maybe a minute (compared with the 5-10 minutes you get from the Glenfiddich 12yo).
I am absolutely going to pick up a bottle of this next time I'm somewhere that carries it. There's only a few shops downtown. It's under $100CAD per bottle, so absolutely affordable. I want this one to have a permanent home right next to the green Glenfiddich bottle.

Got this from my wife as a birthday gift:
I don't know any pretentious whiskey describing words so you're stuck with this:
it's tasty and more mild than any other whiskey I tried
-
@homoBalkanus your wife needs to teach my wife how to give good birthday gifts.
-
@homoBalkanus Jura is a nice introduction to the Island Malts, nothing like as aggressively smoky as the ones from Islay. (Some of those are almost like drinking a peat-fired kipper smokery.) When I take whisky as a present for friends in the US, I'll usually take Jura.

Dude, there's jokes, then there's saying things that will get you put on a watch list.

@lorne-kates Yeah, but it's cheap when it is cheap booze. Think $9 24-pack cases of Milwaukee's Beast, $1/gallon box wine, and $4 fifths of Rye that taste worse than moonshine that was distilled through a radiator and aged for five minutes.
Most people - even ones who aren't diehard alcoholics - don't care what it tastes like as long as it short-circuits the gray matter for a while. I don't know how true it is elsewhere, but it is very true here, and most 'package stores' outside of upscale neighborhoods and college towns tend to go for volume. Until the 1990s, in most of the US the only Scotch whiskies you would find were bottom-tier blended ones such as Cutty Sark, VAT 69, and Johnnie
WankerWalker, and even those would be hard to find in many places. The 'upscale' whisky? Chivas Regal.(OK, as I understand it, Chivas is actually deserving of its accolades, but it is still a blended whisky, which sort of goes against the grain for most whisky connoisseurs these days.)
My BiL (well, my SiL's BiL) deeply loves Bourbon, especially the rather pricey Angel's Envy, but always points out that while there are expensive bottles that are well worth the money (to someone who likes bourbon) and some decent buys in the mid-range, below a certain price point you get far less than what you paid for. Sort of like with Dell computers and HP printers.

By far the best I have ever had [and, no I did not buy it]..
""The Macallan Sherry Oak 25 Year Old Whisky is a pinnacle from ""the Rolls Royce of single malts"". Rich, robust aromas with hints of peaches, blood orange and wood spice. Flavors of coconut, vanilla, lemon and peat. A beautiful lingering finish with slightly spicy, sherried orange. The Macallan Sherry Oak 25 Year Old Whisky is one of the world's most awarded and admired Single Malts.""

That's quite amazingly dysfunctional, you realise?

A couple of students are pushing me to try whiskey with apple juice. As I hate both of those, is there any way some sort of synergy makes the combination drinkable?

Drink the whisky and throw the juice in their face for suggesting such an outrageous idea

Are they trying to make knockoff apple brandy? I'd have thought vodka would work better for something like that
My dad used to mix ethanol with apple juice when he was a chemistry student

If it's cheap American whiskey you can't possibly drink straight because it tastes like a combination of gasoline and that stuff they put in natural gas so it stinks when it leaks... whiskey and Coke (or Pepsi, or Dr. Pepper) is usually my solution.

@boomzilla Interesting. Does anyone know where that whisky actually comes from?
I remember a few years back, Tesco introduced a range of unbranded beers that were pretty good, because they were all brewed by well-established and renowned breweries (whose name only appeared in the small print, it definitely wasn't advertised). I'm guessing it must be something similar here?

Damnit, now I've gone and RTFA, yes, those are fair. The whiskey itself does sound okay too, unfortunately. It helps that the master distiller is dead, for metal purposes. Unfortunately no-one is making a drambuie from this so it falls apart there, send it to rewrite.
Also, this is the "whisky" topic.

Whiskey just makes me gag, am I doing it wrong? How are you people able to enjoy that foul substance??

@Lorne-Kates said in The Whisky Topic:
Like a good whiskey, this topic is well aged and in need of a visit.
Tried two new ones. One on @blakeyrat suggestion, and one by mistake because I couldn't remember which "Glen" Blakey had recommended.
The Glenlivet 12 Year Old
Price: ~$57 CAD for a 750ml bottle
Taste: Light. Harsher start, light finish and the taste ends very quickly. Easy.
Is it shit: No
https://i.imgur.com/X7oDRfi.jpgThe Glenfiddich 12 Year Old
Price: Also ~57 CAD for a 750ml bottle
Taste: Wonderful. Woody and bold flavor, with minimal burn. Beautiful pepper finish that lingers for a nice, long time. I love this. It's a great taste experience, and a single sip hangs around nicely. Makes a small glass last longer.
Is it shit: Absolutely not
I tried a 375ml of each, and ended up buying the 750ml of the Glenfiddich. Unless stated otherwise, I think this'll be my go-to for a while. The Whyte & McKay from before is good-- probably still equal to the Glenlivet.
Oh these two are so fucking good. If i wanna get fucked I go the Jack Daniels + Coke down it like a motherfucker route. Otherwise, these two are the only whiskies I've had and I really like them. Glenfiddich IMO is really enjoyable. I cannot talk like a connoisseur but this is good shit.

The addition of a splash of water brings out a little of the fruit notes – like a dish of Bananas Foster that’s left to burn in a corner.
