Steam Names

Status: Why doesn't every bookmarks system in every piece of software allow me to apply arbitrary textual tags to my bookmarks?
Example: friends lists on various platforms would be easier to manage if I could add labels like "TDWTF" to people from TDWTF. Steam seems to be the only platform that allows me to do this.
-
What's worse is the people who use a different username on EVERY GODDAMNED SERVICE, so even if you do vaguely remember that username comes from DailyWTF, you have no possible way of remembering WHO on DailyWTF that actually is.
Basically, that describes about half of my Steam friends list. Only about 3 people on it have the same name on Steam that they have here.

In my case, it's because my main screen name is traceable to my real identity. So I use another one for obvious reasons.

I usually end up with different names everywhere because
- Already in use. Fuck.
- Rules for logins (this is one of the few that allow 4 chars). Gotta love the ones that say 'we recommend first-initial-last-name. Oh and 8 chars. Well, fuckers, my last name is 6 so your recommendation sucks. John Doe hates you too.'
-
Only about 3 people on it have the same name on Steam that they have here.
- 2 people (@JazzyJosh, @aliceif) have names with additional spaces (or fullwidth characters)
- 2 people (@accalia, @Onyx) have names with additional characters bolted onto the end
- 2 people (@blakeyrat, @Yamikuronue) have names with different capitalization
- @error changed his name when we switched to Discourse
- @Joel, @TwelveBaud, @dhromed, and @RaceProUK have exactly the same name on Steam as they do here
- @ben_lubar the Adequately Skilled has a different prefix, but the same suffix
- @Jarry has a different name on Steam
-
They're all my alts.
-
I have a different one on steam too. Mostly because I don't use Twitter to sign into steam :-)
-
My name (and avatar) are the same on here and Steam as well.
-
As is mine.
Although steam may not be the official @abarker mad hatter hatted version...
-
Since Ben L assures me the nickname feature is relatively stable and Steam won't just fucking delete them one day (like they did with my game categories, and once with my mods), I've gone ahead and added a nickname for everybody I know for sure.
I removed all the friends I couldn't identify. So. Re-invite me if you want. Or don't. Whatever.
I'm sure Steam will delete all these nicknames next week anyway.
(Pro-tip: if you run an online service and just flat-out delete user's data without any warning or recourse, they will NEVER trust you again. I still remember when World of Warcraft lost everybody's friends list during a botched upgrade. Fucking Blizzard. I never trusted that shit again.)
In the process, I found out the Discourse "user:foobar" search doesn't fucking work at all. Trying finding some guy you think has "blake" in their username: https://what.thedailywtf.com/search?q=user%3Ablake
Even when it does work (which is only when you type the full name exactly) it shows that person's *posts" instead of their profile page: https://what.thedailywtf.com/search?q=user%3Ablakeyrat
Quality.
-
it shows that person's *posts" instead of their profile page:
Well that's what you wanted, right?
Clearly trying to search for a user is doing it wrong.Filed under: I channeled Jeff, now I have Jeff all over me. Halp?
-
It also took like 8-9 seconds to render the extremely small "help" lightbox on the search page, after hitting the "help" button. I guess because that requires a server round-trip? Of course it would. Why wouldn't it.
-
In case anyone wants to add me on Steam, there are three Arantors. I'm not the one in Germany, I am the one that has a custom URL - steamcommunity.com/id/Arantor
-
there are three Arantors. I'm not the one in Germany, I am the one that has a custom URL
... who's the third one?
-
Some random person listed as Arantor with a picture of a soldier as their picture - private profile, so nothing else to see.
-
BTW why we're talking about this, do any of the admins in the DailyWTF Steam group still post here at all? There's like 6 people who have admin, I don't recognize any of them.
-
Summer Glau.
-
And 8-9 seconds for static content too, apparently.
Great.
Fantastic.
-

Pfft. Perfect set up, and botches the punchline.
Summer Glau.
See, now Fox ain't funny, but at least he's trying here.
Thanks, Steam. Very useful information there.
-
-
Wait, there was a joke set-up there?
-
-
2 people (@accalia, @Onyx) have names with additional characters bolted onto the end
what? you wanted my steam name to be shorter? :-P
My steam name is my full name, i just go by my frist name here.
but then, you already knew that, didn't you? ;-)
-
You should make
http://accalia.de/elementia
a thing, then.
-
At least that is only three of you. If you search for mine (Justyne) there are a lot more search results. If anyone wants to new steam friends are welcome.
-
There are a lot of results but only two that are Justyne With An E. ;)
-
What's worse is the people who use a different username on EVERY GODDAMNED SERVICE
Helps preserve your anonimity a bit tho', as outside parties will have to jump more hoops to tie the profiles on the various services together as belonging to the same person.
-
You should make
http://accalia.de/elementia
a thing, then.Unfortunately i do not qualify for a german country level domain name.
yes i could lie that i my contact was in gernamy, but that would be purjury....
so yeah... as awesome as that would be.... nah.
-
Unfortunately i do not qualify for a german country level domain name.
Biggest Polish gamedev community has Grenadian domain. Why can't you have German?
-
Why can't you have German?
because
- Germany says i need to have the primary contact for the domain be in germany
- I do not live, nor do i have a contact in, Germany
- Private domain registrations are not available for .de domains on any of the registrars i do business with, and i do not like PII to be associated with my online presence in any way.
- all these bullet points are
1.

My issue with Steam is that people constantly change their display names to whatever they think it the most funny at the time. That little nickname you can give them that shows up in parens? It doesn't show everywhere, so I often get confused when a meme sends me something...
-
At least Steam will show you a history of the person's usernames. If you change your username, avatar, and profile on Twitter, you can be an entirely different person and confuse the fuck out of everybody.
It's funny as shit though when people get angry that Twitter "forced" them to follow George Bush Jr.
-
[...] do any of the admins in the DailyWTF Steam group still post here at all? There's like 6 people who have admin, I don't recognize any of them.
As opposed to some of the 15 admins we have here?
-
Well I think one person who's an admin on the Steam group should probably be part of the community here, but whatever. Permissions on that group are wide open anyway.
-
We'd only need a group admin if we needed to ban someone from the group, so
whatever
-
I still remember when World of Warcraft lost everybody's friends list during a botched upgrade.
Around 1999, Ultima Online lost the part of the world map that stored what kind of ores could be mined where--they didn't put nodes down like WoW or GW2 did, you just mined anywhere that was a mountain. I was making my money as a miner at that time; the rarest mineral, when made into armor, sold well enough I bought a house, which were very expensive because they were actually placed on the map.

If for some reason someone wants to friend me on Steam, this is me:
Although sometimes it's my son playing.
-
Here's mine for anyone who's interested:
I haven't played much on Steam recently, but I'm wanting to get back into playing some.
-

What did you think of Sunless Sea?
Lack of a fast travel system killed it for me. Otherwise: excellent.
Although sometimes it's my son playing.
Please make your son his own account. It's not that hard to log in/out.
Two people sharing one account is worse than people who use random and different names on every IM service.
-

I've only played it for half an hour or whatever so far, but I like it. I was actually going to ask you what you thought of it.
I briefly played Fallen London several years ago and liked it but it took up more time than I wanted.
-

I've been thinking about this, but then I'd probably have to rebuy a bunch of games.
Is it possible to transfer games from one account to another, as opposed to gift buying?
-
Just use the family share feature. That's literally exactly what it's for.
The only limitation is you can't both play simultaneously, but, hey, you can't do that now so you lose nothing.
-
At least Steam will show you a history of the person's usernames.
That "only" goes back 10 names. I've seen it happen a few times that someone I added from some game that I didn't immediately add the same name as their permanent nickname has changed their name over 10 times in a two day period. It's always fun to guess who this Dickbutt today is. They usually get the boot from my friends though.
-

I thought that if I share my library I can't play anything in it if he is playing anything, but maybe I misunderstood previous conversations here. With family share, I can play Sunless Sea at the same time he's playing Fallout 4?
-
I dunno, it looks like the entire library is locked, but that's still NO DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW. So.
I assumed it was the same as the Xbox "home console" feature, but I guess not. That one only locks single games, and locks online play to a single console.
-
If you play a game while he's playing something that you own but he doesn't, he'll have 5 minutes to either buy it for himself or save + quit. If he's playing a game that he owns, then you can play whatever you want without interrupting him. And vice versa.
This is an improvement on the current situation where if either of you is playing anything then the other one gets a nasty "can't launch a game while you're already playing a game" error. Plus, he earns his own achievements, gets his own Steam Cloud slots for savegames, etc.
You'll probably want to buy a few games again, but strictly speaking it's not required.
-

Well, I'll look into it then.

He actually plays more on Steam than I do but I'd hate to just give up my account, as I've had it since Half-Life 2 came out.
