My Unread Outlook Message!!!!! SGADHGFASHDFA DA H FW
-
So we run Outlook 2013 on Office 365 here at work.
Outlook for the last 2 days thinks I have an unread message in my Inbox. But I have a smart folder set up that shows ONLY unread messages, and it doesn't show up there. It's a phantom unread message and it's pissing me off.
Ok, fine. Let's fix this.
Click to Send/Receive, click "Update Folder". Progress bar... done... nope! Still an phantom unread message. Hm.
Right-click Inbox folder, select "Mark All As Read". ... nope! Still a phantom unread message. Hm.
Select-all messages in list, right-click and pick "Mark as Read"... nope! No good.
Ok, let's try this option named "Clean Up Folder". It says "all redundant messages will be deleted". Not sure exactly what counts as a "redundant message" but why the hell not. Progress bar... my inbox went from 7000 items to 5581 items but! There's still a phantom unread message in it.
I AM OUT OF IDEAS. Well, I have---
Ok a co-worker just came by and she suggested opening up the webmail interface and seeing if that listed the phantom unread email. The first time I clicked "show unread" it gave me a server error, but then after a few seconds it did an AJAX refresh and THE UNREAD EMAIL APPEARED! It was a calendar invite! I marked it read there and now my Outlook says zero unread again.
Yay.
So now you know: the Office 365 web app can see strange phantom emails the Outlook desktop client cannot.

If it ever happens again, try turning off your smart folder temporarily.
Before you complain that this isn't the help topic, I'm not trying to help. I'm wondering what would happen.
-
Did you perhaps think to check if the phantom unread
emailcalendar invite was showing up in the calendar?Filed under: also not trying to help, also curious
-
It's Outlook. Calendar invites show up in the inbox. There's no folder for "calendar".
-
It's not a folder, it's a whole different part of the application.
You're right, though. Calendar invites should show up in the inbox. I'm just curious whether it showed up on the calendar.

I don't know.

That's Office 2010 and outdated.

My bad. Here:

Been there. My solution is usually to move all to a temp folder, nuke the folder, reboot, move them back, nuke the temp. Also have found that emptying the trash sometimes helps, as the calendar invites can sometimes show as unread FROM the trash into your other folders .... o_O

Really?
That could have been this. I never delete my files.
-
Yup, really. Had it happen at the last office I was at. They were running Outlook 2013 though, not 365, so YMMV.
-
I'm pretty sure all calendar invites do get moved into the trash folder, even if you accept them. They will continue to appear on your calendar unless you delete or decline the event. It is probably possible to move an unread event to the trash and have it still be a pending-to-accept invitation in your calendar.
The only part that's still puzzling me about blakey's story is the part where he said he had an und
read message in the Inbox. I'd also be quick to blame the smart folder, but @FrostCat already had that angle covered.

It’s obvious once more that Microsoft steals all its ideas from Apple and then tries to “improve” them: if you have an unread message in your spam folder as well as your inbox in Apple’s Mail app on OS X, and read the one in your inbox first,¹ Mail will keep displaying a “1” badge on its icon in the dock (indicating one unread message) even though it doesn’t ever count spam as unread.¹ I may not have the sequence of actions exactly right, but something happens in the situation I described that causes this bug to show up at times.

Did you try turning it off, and then turning it back on again?

If @blakeyrat calls the version of Visual Studio I work with outdated, I can do the same to the Office version from that year!

Logic.

I haven't had this exact problem, but I do from time to time get the "You have new items" icon showing up in the
system traynotification area when I don't actually have any new items. Usually, but not always, marking something as unread and then reading it again is enough to make it go away.
-
Yesterday I had a similar problem. The same Office 365 Outlook 2013 shows one unread item in Inbox, can't find it. Googled for the filter to show only unread messages because the Outlook interface is utter shit and finally after trying it many times - as it didn't seem to do anything - it finally gave me an unread (which I actually had read) Skype for Business conversation which I had to manually set to read to get rid of it.
Needless to say I hate the way previous Skype for Business conversations are in Outlook and not in the application itself. Also you can't paste long text into Skype for Business which is also a big .

I want to copy something from a conversation. So I select some text and Ctrl+C. I past it somewhere else ... ucking SfB pastes my selected text + the name of my colleague and a date & time. I didn't ask for that did I? I ucking specifically selected part of a sentence ...

Skype for Business
That's apparently one of the big loci right now. I don't know from personal experience though, as we managed to bungle our local deployment of it so badly that nobody uses it as they prefer to stick with ordinary Skype on the grounds that that actually works. If nobody's using it, nobody will start using it because nobody they want to communicate with is using it: it's the network effect, and it is working in our favour this time.
-
If you are/were using Lync, it's the same shit with different name and skin and it really has nothing to do with Skype.
: Read your post wrong, you apparently know it already. It's still a to rename it into something that people already know and it has nothing to do with it.
-
you apparently know it already
Oh yes. We stuffed that deployment up too. The academics round here really don't want to end up stuck with that doesn't work, and aren't very forgiving when IT has one of their… “less well-advised” moments. We have a lot of custom and
leadingbleeding-edge stuff here and do a lot of collaboration with outside organisations, and all that is a big part of our USP. Standardising things almost invariably causes trouble. (Opt-in services work much better.)

One of my pet peeves with Outlook (2010): I get a meeting invite, I read it, accept the invite, and Outlook moves it to the "Deleted Items", still marked as unread...
-
Googled for the filter to show only unread messages because the Outlook interface is utter shit
It's a button that says "Unread" right there above the list of emails. RIGHT THERE. ABOVE THE LIST OF EMAILS.
It could not be easier to find.
-
Yes, I tried that and it did absolutely nothing.
Then I read I need to click on the mailbox (which was already selected) in the left pane. That closed the whole search operation a few times until it suddenly did what the instructions said - filtered the folder I selected and not close the god damn search.
-
Yes, I tried that and it did absolutely nothing.
It should show "there are no unread messages" if your phantom email was like mine.
I don't know what you mean by "did absolutely nothing". Do you mean it didn't show the unread message? Or it literally did absolutely nothing? In the latter case, your shit's all broke.
-
My workplace has run the gamut (Lync, some Exchange chat thing, and now I think I heard Skype). To the best of my knowledge, I have never seen a single person interacting in any way with any of them with the exception of "what the fuck is this shit that pops up every time I log in". Skype's not even installed on my computer, actually, so I Dunno LOL ¯(°_o)/¯
-
Actually let's revisit this UI because I find it really hard to use [s]even when it works[/s]:
a) Click in the "Search Current Mailbox" input field and the magic search ribbon appear above
b) Click on "Unread"
c) All unread shit everywhere appears in my view now
d) Click on "Inbox" in the left pane
e) Search closesThe page I linked clearly says "In the Navigation Pane, click Inbox or the folder that you want to filter.". The instructions don't really say what version of Outlook but either the way it works has changed since that was created or it's broken.
-
You're making it WAY harder than you have to. I can't post a screenshot because my laptop doesn't have Outlook installed, but there's a button to filter Unread at the top of the list of emails in every folder. You don't need a "search ribbon".

I am so glad I got a job that doesn't force me to use any MS product

Funny, I didn't see it there. I'll make a mental note to use my eyes next time.

One of my pet peeves with Outlook (2010): I get a meeting invite, I read it, accept the invite, and Outlook moves it to the "Deleted Items", still marked as unread...
So? The unread state doesn't show up unless you're in Deleted Items.
If it really bugs you just set the "mark as read" timer shorter so it's marked it read before you accept.
-
The unread state doesn't show up unless you're in Deleted Items.
IIRC, it has a little parenthetical number next to Deleted saying how many unread there are. It bugs me too.
-
I guess Outlook wasn't designed for obsessive-compulsive people.
-
IIRC, it has a little parenthetical number next to Deleted saying how many unread there are.
IIRC mine shows how many emails are in there, and this isn't anything I've changed because I don't care either way.
-
-
"what the fuck is this shit that pops up every time I log in"
I made the mistake of starting it up once (looking for the real Skype). ONCE. Now I can't get it to stop launching, despite not having set up an Outlook profile. So, I added the Deny Execute attribute to the "Skype for Business" executable, which happens to be called...
Because that makes SO MUCH SENSE!
Forget rebranding!

We;re supposed to have upgrade from Communicator to Lync two weeks ago. Then they delayed a week for unknown reasons. now if you mention either software, the helpdesk guys hide under their desk until you go away.
-
the helpdesk guys
The (partial) main menu for our helpdesk has for options:
- Password Issues
- Windows, desktop, laptop and Wyse terminal issues
- Microsoft Outlook issues
- All other issues
I have to wonder each time I hear option 1.1, I mean, do you not know that you're using Windows credentials when logging into a Windows machine?

Our helpdesk is a big Hawaiian dude named Sam.

It also bolds the deleted items folder in the filder list, and thus attracts my attention.

Hmm no ... only the number. It does however sensible bold the current folder you have selected.
