HTML Video Player Controls
The rumors are true. The video player has been redesigned and the controls are now in HTML.Oh wow! As an end-user I can safely way this is so impressive becau-- oh wait. NOBODY GIVES A FUCKING SHIT!!!!!
"Implementation detail: not implemented slightly differently than before! NO REAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PRODUCT! BE EXCITED!"
Goddamned.
-
I don't even give a shit about Twitch, but I'd be happy not to be using a non-HTML player anymore .

Why? Are you some kind of HTML supremacist?
<script=I swear I'm not doing it on purpose but it seems every single of my posts lately involve accusing someone of moral misconduct
I blame all of you all.
-
One less binary blob, maybe, so one fewer basket the eggs are in, I can hope - at least, one fewer vendor to look for security updates from... Tho, that "controls are in html" makes me think, maybe I've jumped down @blakeyrant's throat a little too soon.
Also, I'm an SGML supremacist, yes. Why do you ask?
-
One less binary blob, maybe, so one fewer basket the eggs are in
You... Normally want more baskets for the eggs...
-
Would you prefer Twitch continued to use Flash?

Fucking metaphors, how do they work, @Gribnit?
-
No, I would prefer they don't send me spam over non-features.

Do you have a Twitch account?
-
Flash is stupid and it's going out of style quick. HTML5 video player is definitely a feature I want to hear about. YouTube has had HTML5 livestreams for ages, nice to see Twitch finally catching up.
Don't believe it's a big deal? With the Flash twitch player, my system basically can't cope with livestreams. With HTML5 player, my system doesn't even care. It's a huge usability improvement IMO.
-
Furthermore, do you use Twitch at all?
-
Do you have a fist in your face?
Because if you're about to pedantic dickweed me over the definition of "spam", you're gonna.

I almost did, but I've decided that I'm going to pedantic dickweed you over the definition of "feature" instead, because in this case it's more relevant to my internship than "spam" is, ironically.
So, in any case, if you use Twitch at all, you have, up until this point, been using Adobe Flash Player to do so. Adobe Flash Player is the gift that keeps on giving, and not in a good way. There's an emergency fix for a critical vulnerability released almost bi-weekly. Upgrading your wildly popular video streaming platform to not rely on it is probably the best feature Twitch has ever released, because now all of those Twitch users don't have to use Flash, and can probably disable it entirely now. The internet just became a little more secure in general.

You could, you know, just check his Twitch page. Or realize that he is one of the members of the hit online series Robots in the News. Or, well, not be a complete dick. Any of the three work for me.
Edit: Oh, there's a fourth thing you can do. Read the damn article, which says they're still using Flash (and not PlayReady and not Widevine and not PlaysForSure and not ClearKey, so they're idiots), so your rant is completely orthogonal.
-
I was nice to him earlier today. Since he responded with dickishness, I'm going to take a guess and say he had his fill of that, so I'm just trying to accommodate him.
-
which says they're still using Flash
Ok, I take back everything positive I said about Twitch. @blakeyrat is 100% correct that this email is useless.

Seconded.

NOBODY GIVES A FUCKING SHIT!
Accurate.
Some devs don't seem to get this. They think some technical thing, let's say for example "rewriting a WYSIWYG editor in ember", is an achievement that users will care about. If there is no functional difference, the users will give zero fucks. It's sad for a dev to come to terms with, but it's true. Users don't care about whatever technical marvel you've achieved. They only care if it does the job or not.
Devs on the other hand are a different kettle of fish.
-

Could be worse. They could do it semi-weekly...

Could be worse. They could do it semi-weekly...I'm sure we have a Java bashing topic somewhere around here, take that shit there please.

Speaking of which, meta.derp was just updated.
-
Oh, well I see how that's relevant to Twitch.TV's useless spam. Thank you for posting that here.
-
This is just a step in the process.
Twitch expects to finish their HTML5 upgrade by Q2 2016 according to the TwitchCon 2015 keynote address.
-
You'll get another spam email when they finally move the actual video to html5. It's just the controls that were changed, and they've been working on that for nearly 6 months.
-
Great. Looking forward to that.
-
Hey, guys, you know what the difference is between bi-weekly and semi-weekly, right?
-
Hey, guys, you know what the difference is between bi-weekly and semi-weekly, right?
One means twice a week and the other means every half a week?
-
That's the way I learned it, yes. The comments above suggest that some of the audience maybe think they mean the same thing.
-

Well, they are, roughly. Averaged over a week, certainly.
-
The applicable metaphor is "Put all your eggs in one basket, and WATCH THAT BASKET".
-
So, what you're saying is, they've completed one step in the feature they should've implemented at least a year ago, and they're not going to have the full feature done for about six months, but they're still bragging about being partially done via email to all their users anyway?
-
"Take your eggs out of the old rotting basket they're in and put them in this newer basket that should last at least a couple decades"
-
You'll get another spam email when they finally move the actual video to html5
People aren't stupid, we know what HTML5 video is and why it's better than Flash. One such reason is that YouTube advertisements are affected by
$("video").playbackRate = 4
, but that's just a personal preference.
-
Is this why now streams don't start playing until I go fullscreen?
As an end user I care about this shit because it broke my shit.
-
So... I guess that boils down to "hey guys, we're actually trying, and we should now be one step closer to supporting all you who [ca|do]n't use Flash".
You're right, it's not terribly useful, but it's something I guess.
Also, the controls being HTML might make it play a bit nicer with screen reading software. But since I don't use that software, I wouldn't know.
-
No, that shouldn't have anything to do with it.
-
One means twice a week and the other means every half a week?
I was always taught that bi- means 'every other' and semi- means 'twice a'. So bi-weekly would be fortnightly and semi-weekly would be twice a week.A quick search tells me that, sadly once again, where my knowledge was once correct, common usage has stitched me up
-
But how many days does a week have?
Filed Under: old topic is old

That thread is hilarious.
OMG He's from Phoenix, this explains EVERYTHING.
-
Flash in general is meh. Twitch's Flash player in particular, however, is completely horrible, and it's a good thing they're replacing it (with anything else at all).
-
I was always taught that bi- means 'every other' and semi- means 'twice a'.
Taught wrong then.
Bicycle - every other.... cycle? No. Bi means two (as, likewise, tri- means three). Bi-weekly -> twice a week.
Semicircle - twice a... circle? No. Semi means half. Semi-weekly - half a week.
A quick search tells me that...
... there is a vocal subset of the internet which agrees that the opposite is the case. I know.
-
the controls are now in HTML
What was it before? If it was Silverlight, EDGE users might care.
-
When I was growing up, magazines and such which released every two weeks called themselves "bi-weekly", and it seems that some people can't let that ingrained meaning go quite yet.
-
Try again.
Semiannual - "half year": Every 0.5 years (six months).
Biennial - "two year": Every 2 years.
-
Try again.
As I said:
... there is a vocal subset of the internet which agrees that the opposite is the case. I know.
But:
Semiannual - "half year": Every 0.5 years (six months).
Biennial - "two year": Every 2 years. If you're going to use semiannual as your example, then the other case should be biannual ("twice a year"), not biennial.
-
I'm confused now... so how long did the Bicentennial Man live?
Filed under: I'm going for 2 years because he had to be always-online and the servers got shut down

Dickish is his fursona's default setting. Don't take it personally.
