Today, in a double feature...
- @sam with the FBNECROMAC response
- That reveals hidden information, because their shitty whisper feature treats "hidden" posts as actual posts, incrementing the post counter
- That doesn't even provide a fix for the problem, just declaring a workaround "the right way to do it"

@pie_flavor said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
@jaloopa Ok, then, what's the reason? Why would you want to edit a post, as a moderation action, to remove extremely harmful information from it, after determining that it's bad enough to suspend or mute someone for, and yet leave the information that you've removed behind?
And you can always choose 'do nothing' and then edit the post normally anyway.
Why not outright delete such a post and at least track that it was a moderator who deleted it?
It gets hairy if you get caught up in someone's legal spat and the court grants a warrant (or just give an order, depending on jurisdiction and legal systems) to audit the post history. How do you prove to the court that something was said or not said? Admittedly, that's not something that wouldn't (or shouldn't[!]) come up frequently, but it could happen, especially if the forum in some way regularly deals with PII or other sensitive information and/or the legal system in the forum's home country requires such record-keeping.
Allowing only admins (or even just db-level access) to view (soft-)deleted posts and edits and otherwise hiding them from all other users and moderators usually covers any such issues, though.

https://meta.discourse.org/t/password-settings-changed-after-rebuild-users-unable-to-login/79835
- Users have 10 character passwords
- Discourse updates, sets the minimum length to 15
- No one can log in now because the log-in page rejects the 10 character password
Can everyone use the password reset?
-
@lorne-kates fucking hell, that's programming 101. You don't validate password requirements on login, you only do it when the user sets a password.

One of the TCotCDCK acolytes has produced something to truly marvel at:
A discourse plugin that can help you combating with inappropriate content. It requires a Google Perspective API key (experimental and with limited availability). The plugin can:
- flag user’s post if it’s toxic.
- show a notification when they type something toxic.
Live Demo
If you are interested in the plugin, try it on a test site asusername: toxic-user password: ThisPersonIsToxic
Jeff must be salivating at the prospect of being able to automatically control what people can say on his forums.
Repent sinners! The age of Civilised Discourse is upon us!
-
Ooooooo, look at this one!!!
Specifically:
When run on my forum, the “most toxic posters” list corresponded well with members our moderators are keeping an eye on. Aside from “toxicity” the measures of “inflammatory”, “attack on author”, “attack on commenter” were also reasonably accurate - at least enough to highlight the most problematic behaviour on the forum.
We could have a new section on the "Users" page that ranks users by toxicity! That would be so fucking cool! :-D
Also see this for bonus lols
There were one or two anomalies. For example, one of our “most toxic” members turned out to be a wonderfully kind chap who was one of our forum’s earliest joiners and freely donated money to help with our running costs. Why so toxic? It turns out that he signs off posts with his nickname, “Dick,” and as far as the Perspective API is concerned, that’s rather uncivil.

So how do you deal with a case where certain language is used as an in-joke? Or, maybe it's a roleplaying forum and someone is running a pirate-themed game where they all swear all the time because, y'know, in-character stuff?
I doubt the ability of any AI to correctly determine stuff like this without extensive per-instance training. And I'm not sure that API does that.
At least it's "just" a plugin... For now...

@onyx You make a good point.

Conclusion:
BITCHCOMPLAINing about anything is toxic.
-
@onyx For funsies, I tried some of the invented "swearwords" from SciFi:
Smeg
from Red Dwarf gets 0.36 (unlikely to be toxic)
Frack
from BSG gets 0.28 (unlikely to be toxic)
Frell
gets a 0.51 (unsure) however.Dren
gets the same. Sorry Farscape fans, you're fucked. There's a silver lining though:mivonks
only gets a 0.39, and the phrase "suck my mivonks" makes it confused.Suck my mivonks, Perspective, suck them good.

Discourse is for SERIOUS discussions only. Jokes are not desirable communication. You're communicating wrong. And in-jokes are exclusionary and toxic. Literally NO civil forum in the entire world uses in-jokes. BANNED!Or, maybe it's a roleplaying forum and someone is running a pirate-themed game where they all swear all the time because, y'know, in-character stuff?
Discourse is not for playing games on. Games are not desirable communication. You're using the forum wrong. New users will be confused why people are talking different in these subforums. Literally NO civil forum in the entire world does roleplaying or "games". BANNED!!

They've been ignoring (or at least not publicly replying to) that post all week. Of course, he might have followed up and gotten posts deleted. Maybe everyone wants to forget about it.
-
@boomzilla fuck, I didn't see how old the post was...

As we all know, is not only great as an ultra modern forum, designed for the next 10 years, but it is also very useful as a bug tracker too.
Well, you can now add another skill to that list, as a guy is now using it as a note app! Joe proudly posted about his achievement on the Discourse meta site:
I’ve started a new private instance of Discourse that is designed to be a notes app replacement. Think of Evernote or OneNote but it’s Discourse and for only a single person.
Wow, that's a fantastic idea, and isn't at all completely moronic.
It's also very nice to see a lot of community support for his brilliant idea.
-

@doctorjones react and ember were originally designed to be UI frameworks for to-do apps, so this isn't too crazy IMO

Today in Doing It Wronger:
Hey, we ran into a lot of problems with new user onboarding with Discourse. It takes a lot of time for non-technical users to figure out how to use the system, because there aren't any help resources for indicating basic functionality of the software, and the @discobot tutorials are both too advanced and too unreachable because our users don't associate chatbots with new user help
What sorts of help threads did you wind up setting up, what's the background of your users?
WTF, do your users even Internet?
