:wtf: How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread)
-
What happens if they get replied to? Do we end up with some spider-fuck-web of a reply chain?
Fuck knows.
-
Just imagine, certain topics in The Lounge could be discosecurely merged with the Status thread!

That's actually an interesting question. Posts will get their IDs, yes. But, what will be their
topic_id/post_number
pair? Will it belong to the topic? Would that mean that regular users' URL jumps from/t/x/n
to/t/x/n+2
if/t/x/n+1
is a hidden post? Does that give the regular users a hint that mods are talking behind their backs?Don't know about you, but I'm getting popcorn...
-
Don't know about you, but I'm getting popcorn...
I wonder what happens if some posts get jeffed? Wouldn't surprise me if the post IDs change, but then forget to update the table with secret/not-secret IDs, and suddenly innocuous posts are hidden and the super-secret dev trash talk is open for all to see.
-
Don't know about you, but I'm getting popcorn...
Yeah. There is just no way that they don't fuck this up. There is also no way that I can see that this will not significantly increase database load. They are just adding more shit to select by for each thread.
-
I'd hope that like Jeffed posts, there would be a gap in the actual post ID but the Newlevator just counts the visible posts.
But they'll have fucked it up some how.
-
There is also no way that I can see that this will not significantly increase database load.
I wonder if the IDs for the "whispers" would be sent down in the list of all post IDs in the topic.
-

AFAIK, this doesn't happen. They just get new
topic_id
andpost_number
.but then forget to update the table with secret/not-secret IDs, and suddenly innocuous posts are hidden and the super-secret dev trash talk is open for all to see.
You'd HOPE this would be a flag in
posts
table and not a separate one. However, given how the database looks now...There is also no way that I can see that this will not significantly increase database load
If they used SQL, eh, it's just a
WHERE
on aboolean
column. It's not that big of a deal. But they use ActiveRecord. Fuck knows what it will do to the query.I wonder if the IDs for the "whispers" would be sent down in the list of all post IDs in the topic.
-

Can you imagine what would happen of the thread where we put blakey's picture over the sphincter of various animals ever leaked from The Lounge?
...I may have said too much...
-
I have now idea how you actually whisper in a topic. Can't see any related options on either riking's forum or elsewhere.
Another Discocoverable feature.

Use very tiny text to inform others of @loopback0's @accalia?

Sufferball Goalie Bot
I don't know what that is. The only result Google returns for that phrase is this topic.

TIL: Pasting animated GIF's doesn't seem to work; had to use URL.
Animated GIFs are not civilizedhttps://meta.discourse.org/t/impersonating-user-and-then-returning-to-admin/19382/15?u=codinghorror
But don't worry, we're bikeshedding the workaround away too! (RIP logout button)

How about pasting MNGs?
-
Right, which means it'll get Jeffed in another release or two, once he has stats to show how many (totally not inactive auto-created bots because you can't make bots in DC) users don't even use that setting anyway.
-
Well, I've never used the logout button in Discourse. I should get 257% attendance today or tomorrow.
-
Yay, another bug. I was on /latest when I submitted that. Of course, /latest is not a valid place to post a reply, so it should have posted to the only valid place for it, here, the original topic. Actual behavior: Asked if I wanted to post it to the original topic or shadowmod queries, which I had open in another tab.

>New feature: "whisper", replies in topics that are only visible to staff.
I can't imagine why this would be useful in a typical forum. The only way I could see this being useful is if you are using your forum as an issue tracker. Then you can accept bug reports and feature requests from users, and the dev team can have inline conversations that are hidden from the users.
Oh, wait …

Another thought: Does anyone else foresee issues with the "N (days|months|years) later" insert, kind of like currently exist with filtered posts, deleted posts, jeffed posts, etc.? Isn't this "whisper" feature just going to compound that problem?

Yeah.

Like most Discofeatures it just creates new problems (or worsens existing problems) and doesn't actually solve any problem known outside of Jeff's head.
-
Does anyone else foresee issues
Obviously, the discodevs don't foresee problems. That would require actually thinking about potential consequences, which would require actually thinking.
Seriously, there's a thing called FMEA — failure modes and effects analysis. I'd bet more money than I have that Jeff&Co. have never at any point in Discourse development done one. They sure as fuck don't do one for all their bikeshedding changes.
-
Well, I've never used the logout button in Discourse. I should get 257% attendance today or tomorrow.
I had the impression that you had to register some 'activity' for each day (even as little as visit the site (hit F5), read one post, like one post...) to qualify for attendance badges...
-
I thought HTTP 500s WERE failure modes...? Jokes one me.
The call is coming from inside the building
-
You have to load the page while logged in. You don't need to do anything with it.
-

Yes, yes you do. Which is why I don't have that badge yet. I have quite a few 1- or 2-day gaps here and there. However, I don't think I've ever intentionally logged out since this steaming pile of donkey dung was dropped on us almost a year and a half ago.
-

And the only reason you would use a forum for your bug tracker is of you wanted to argue with and be hostile with your users.
...oh...wait...
-

I've intentionally logged out once or twice. It causes you to be logged out from every browser or device you were logged in from at the time. I suppose it's a security feature, but it's more annoying than anything else. It meant that I stopped logging in to TDWTF from my work PC, so I guess there were some benefits...

One of us escaped the Discoban.
Said ban escapee is debating sending a message to certain people trying to explain what they have done and how badly it will come back to bite them in the arse.

One of us escaped the Discoban.
Several of us.
Said ban escapee is debating sending a message to certain people trying to explain what they have done and how badly it will come back to bite them in the arse.
But that would involve visiting meta.d, which is a toxic hellstew run Uncle Jeff Stalin.

I think it would be much more apropos for DC if 1.41 was released on September 20
-
various animals ever leaked from The Lounge
Hmm. Let me see.... That would be one fox and one hedgehog, right? What other animals have leaked from The Lounge?
-
What other animals have leaked from The Lounge?
A rat with a modified sphincter?

Imagine that every post carried a list of user IDs (or user categories) that are allowed to see it.
The potential for trolling and various fuckery would be amazing. You could present a different post to each half of the forum and see how long it takes them to notice they're talking about different things, or present slightly different comments to just one user and make them think they're going crazy.
-
Said ban escapee is debating sending a message to certain people trying to explain what they have done and how badly it will come back to bite them in the arse.
Does said escapee seriously expect that strategy to work? One of the symptoms of Jeff Syndrome is a complete inability to admit being wrong.
-
present slightly different comments to just one user and make them think they're going crazy.
Shadow<wbs>trolling?
Please implement this immediately. It is relevant to my interests!
-
But then the mods would decide to turn the whole forum into a "Truman show" where they'd carefully craft different environments for each of us to see how we react and put us on TV.
-
So...flags? They already have flags, and they make sense the way that they work now by sending a PM.
This looks like the genesis:
The benefit of the confidential tag is that any moderator can see and react to the post quickly and sound a company-wide alert, vs. a PM system or ticketing system where the specific recipients need to be online at the time to see the report.
Which is totally fucking backwards, because the mods immediately get notifications of flags instead of having to read a topic. But...I guess they have their way of operating. They must be paying monies to not get the Doing It Wrong Topic Close Of Doom.
-
I agree with you, but it might just be because I'm used to Discourse now.
The way you propose would involve:
- Creating a new topic with whatever info can be posted publicly
- Flagging your own post for moderator attention
Now, because "flagging" is usually considered a "bad thing" so it might be counter-intuitive for the users?
My solution would probably be adding another icon, but you can imagine how well it would go with Jeff.

The correct way would be to PM a group: the group of moderators.
Doesn't/didn't Discourse have groups? Where are they hiding?
-
I must be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome but as written in that meta.d post I can see it has some merit.
This assumes, of course, that they have simply discounted having access controls on certain sub-fora which would be the way I'd let the devs discuss secret shit with each other.
-
ailure modes and effects analysis.
Well.
I remember that there was talk of categories that users could create posts in but only moderators could see other people's posts.
Just such a category and stick the info there..
-
But then the mods would decide to turn the whole forum into a "Truman show"
It's a funny idea, but sounds too much like work.
-

See: The Lounge and Turn Left, two of the categories we have here, which are restricted to TL3+ and TL4+, respectively.
