I am awestruck at this level of supreme dedication to doing the absolute bare minimum. It is amazing.
I read more about it. This girl is my hero.
If I weren't sick during collegiate nationals in 1993...I might have had a shot at Olympic trials in judo in 1994.

They did surprisingly well, as evidenced by the past 200+ years, but a lot of their efforts would have been better spent on establishing firm principles of accountability and transparency rather than decentralization; all of human history teaches us that that's the exact opposite of what actually works, and a lot of the messes we've ended up in in this country spring directly from that one root.
Like...what?

@karla
I would have thought that shooting belongs and judo go as well together as judo and chops

but you wouldn't have had a chance at a medal in 1996 ... you almost needed a ID to get on the stand that year

Derp...96. I knew I had no chance at medaling.
ETA:
My chance for Olympic trials was only because there were 3 of us in the division at collegiate nationals. I had a decent chance of winning if I weren't sick.I ended up tapping out in slow motion, referee didn't even realize it right away because it was so slow.

I got an autoplaying video trying to load followed by "VIDEO UNAVAILABLE." If one really must have an autoplaying video (one mustn't), that's quite the best sort to have.

@boomzilla So, do they normally give law enforcement officers a discount? If so, that's cool. Or was she pretending to be a corrupt officer trying to get a discount she wouldn't have been entitled to even if she were a genuine officer? Also, I like Chick-fil-A for the exact reasons that make them controversial :face_with_stuck-out_tongue:, but I don't really like their food; it's definitely not worth that much trouble to get it cheaper.

I've seen restaurant around here who only charges the drinks to police officers, since the location is protected while the cops are there
-
@timebandit said in In other news today...:
only charges the drinks
MakesDoesn't make sense. Most fast food restaurants don't really make money on the food, but make a killing on the drinks — charge $1.95 for $0.03 worth of carbonated water and sugar syrup.
-
A live image of @boomzilla pondering looking up the context of a conversation he's replying to:
-
@hardwaregeek
But you just proved why "only charging the drinks" is exactly upside down. If the officer gets food that has a retail price of $5 plus a $2 drink, the restaurant is "eating" $2.50+ by comping the food, and charging the officer $2 for that $0.03 beverage. Instead of the other way around.

329 lawyers in the class action against Anthem, Inc.
A $115 million settlement
With costs, the judge said, only 45 percent of the fund would be left for the class members.See, lawyers are not bad people. They help innocent victims get justice and all they ask for in return is a measly $192,249.24 each.

It's not even as bad as that - from the article, the actual lawyers' fees totalled a little under $38 million, so that's only around $115,000 each.
Something the article never got around to explaining is how the number of firms involved went from 8 to 53 - after the judge had expressed concern that dragging another 6 firms into the case meant the two original firms didn't have the expertise to handle it.

How the fuck is that poor judgement?

Poor judgement is launching a full police investigation when a kid makes an innocent offhand remark in class.Overreaction much?

The KFC thing here is a classic (though calling the police over it is still ). Apparently, KFC changed their supplier of logistics for moving the chicken from the abattoirs to their franchises; it'd previously been some specialist provider that I'd not heard of, but now is DHL who undercut the other firm. Despite not actually knowing the faintest thing about moving many tons of fresh chicken a day. As you might quickly guess, it's a total fustercluck, with vast amounts of now unusable chicken accumulating at a single warehouse that's not large enough or certified to handle this sort of thing, and those KFC franchises are now without their chicken. Plenty of blame on the managements of both DHL and KFC, and very little sympathy from anyone else.
Who knew that temperature- and time-sensitive food logistics in a just-in-time delivery chain isn't exactly the same thing as moving a few parcels? Next up, we'll end up with someone suggesting that management needs to know something about the business they're in charge of, and the whole world will come to a juddering end…

They pragmatically expanded the powers of the federal government to cover necessary functions, but they remained somewhat shell-shocked after British oppression and the war that arose from it, and kept trying to cling to their small-government ideas (which had already failed once!) as much as they could, in defiance of reason and human nature.
You're rewriting history here and confusing federalism with "small government."
Yes, what we now call "small government" was the status quo for about 150 years after independence, thus there was no need for a special phrase for it.

From what I've read they've already been through the exact same song and dance five years ago.
-
@rhywden It looks like that was for Burger King & DHL though:
-
@rhywden Frankly, there's almost nobody with sympathy for management on either side. DHL were already on my personal “do not trade with those guys” list, and I'm happily in the state of never having purchased a thing from KFC. I do feel a bit sorry for the franchisees and the delivery workers at Bidvest, but it's not about to change my habits or anything…
An ideal outcome would involve at least one of the major parties ceasing trading, for maximum

Just for the sake of due diligence - was the only evidence (apart from the common sense "this couldn't possibly be true) that Stan was delusional the break-in that didn't happen? Certainly the doubles would be hard to accept on face value, but there was any other concrete evidence?
