we'd be rid of those assholes forever
I've never found any reasonable basis for hostility toward vegans per se. What's yours?
If it's an objection to sanctimony in general, fair enough. But the incidence of sanctimony among the vegans I know doesn't even begin to approach that occurring in, say, conservative American Christians. "Live and let live" is, after all, the fundamental idea that underpins veganism.

There is that, and the fact that they're insanely difficult to cater for, and very unlikely to trust that you've done it right even when you put the effort in, which is deeply insulting when you're trying to organise a social gathering. In general, I'm totally happy with vegetarianism per se (about 10% or so of my cow-orkers are vegetarian) but the vegans I've known in real life have been complete asses.
IME, most conservative American Christians (yes, I know a few) are not as bad as all that as long as you avoid a couple of key topics (generally, the widely-known hot topics “religion” and “politics”; those have had warning flags on them for many centuries).
-

pfffft. That's no fun at all.

Exactly. Whereas with vegans, it's "don't eat". And when your social gatherings often revolve around food, having a vegan around is like inviting an Evangelical Christian to your orgy.

Work smarter, not harder. Invite your vegans over early and have them do all the food prep.
Every vegan I know is a fucking amazing cook.

Christians generally won't inform you that they're a Christian within the first 5 minutes of meeting them.
-
@flabdablet I don't care how good a cook you are; as much as I like cheesecake, it fucking pisses me off when it's made out of cashew and almond paste instead of real dairy.
And actually, every vegan I know also has a fake gluten allergy. So fuck off.

@flabdablet
Except they don't use the most important ingredient for any dish... BACON!!! :pSeriously, though, it's like having someone with a serious food allergy at your party, except instead of asking for you to label dishes and cook in separate pans, they're likely to guilt trip you for your Gaea-insensitivity in your menu selection. Loudly and in front of everyone.
-
@flabdablet sorry, I just have a "fuck off" reaction to the suggestion of having someone who doesn't eat food put in charge of preparing it.
-
-
I wanted the one where the girl waves a car to pull to the curb then runs to tell the driver she's a vegan, but I couldn't find it so here's this:
-
@izzion I love Mongolian grills, but it's so frustrating when there are vegans present. They have to shut down the grill, thoroughly clean it, swap out all utensils to special ones that have never touched meat, and all the normal people are forced to wait until they're done. We have an hour for lunch, don't have time to spend all that waiting for the one who grinds the whole process to a halt.
-
@mott555
Yeah, that would seem like a case where the restaurant should either maintain a separate small grill for segregated cooking, or post the Dairy Queen / McDonalds notice of "your food might come in contact withallergensanimal byproducts, deal or gtfo"

If they're wearing a cross necklace or have a jesus fish on their car, it's within the first 5 seconds.
Not to mention the fact that they literally have places were people go to preach about it. I used to go to one when I was a kid. Jesus and being christian is like all they talk about there.
-

It's odd. I see this kind of "vegans are like this amirite" stuff way more often than I ever see an actual vegan actually express actual disapproval of anything I happen to be eating.
All of the vegans I know are quite reticent about their food choices, and will talk about their veganism only to people they have reason to believe will not just dump the customary load of snark on them as result. And yet there's this widespread perception of vegans as irritating, proselytizing, holier-than-thou killjoy pricks.
It's almost as if there are huge numbers of people who have to expend so much effort on willful blindness toward the shameful state of modern agribusiness that they genuinely experience the mere existence of a vegan as an implicit reproach.
Either that, or the fact that every vegan I've ever encountered in person has been pleasant company is just freakishly good luck.
-
@Bort said in In other news today...:

That isn't "telling" you. If vegans just had a little broccoli charm to wear and didn't also feel the need to tell you about it, it'd be a hell of a lot less annoying to be around them.
Not to mention the fact that they literally have places were people go to preach about it.
Those places tend to be well marked as such, so I suggest you just avoid them. They're private property, anyway.

More likely, you only ever hear the complainers, because they're the only ones likely to speak out in the first place.
-
@RaceProUK I know! And what about these shoes? I only bought them yesterday and look at the state of them!

Are they eating it too?
-
@flabdablet
Yeah, the most likely answer is that 90%+++ of all ${PERSON_GROUP_WITH_NEGATIVE_STEREOTYPE} people are quiet, generally happy to live and let live, etc.Our brains are just wired to remember the loud proselytizer, and they become the exception that proves the rule of the negative stereotype.
I can say I haven't personally met any vegans, though I have known several people that had food allergies that required they avoid mass prepared food and buffets and similar. It's definitely something a "normal eater" doesn't consider during menu selection and food prep, and it can easily become an annoying inconvenience for the person responsible for the menu. I just personally have a much harder time thinking about dealing with that inconvenience over a preference (veganism) rather than an actual life or death allergy.
-
@izzion the vegans I know are nice people but they're freaking annoying to cater for when you're having meals together regularly.
And no, the fact that they're implicitly accusing me of murder doesn't help, even if they're too polite to say it to my face.
-

That about goes for any group with some kind of food preference.
Reference: kosher, halal.

Also, yes.

: Yep.

Are thankfully easier to cater for, as (some) stores mark foods as kosher or halal.

If you buy from those stores you are SUPPORTING TERRORISM.

@TimeBandit Let me check the definition:
I'll admit Google isn't the ultimate arbiter of the use of the English language, but I think I can safely conclude meat isn't murder
Unless it's human meat

Plenty do. Especially the ones who knock on your door specifically to tell you they're Christians

Because eating meat is a somewhat more common activity than chanting praises to Satan.

Halal, yes. Kosher is a bit more tricky as you basically need two sets of every kitchen utensil you have (that includes stuff like a dishwasher).

: Yep.I have come to the conclusion that there is no moral case for eating meat, and I should stop.
I have also come to the conclusion that I am selfish, and won't stop until lab grown meat is a viable alternative

My parents know a vegetarian who won't eat food they make when he visits because the pans have been used for meat. He takes his own pots and pans around with him

No moral case, but from an evolutionary viewpoint, humans are meant to eat at least a bit of meat. Otherwise, why have canine teeth?

@RaceProUK from an evolutionary viewpoint, we're not meant to survive many diseases that are now shrugged off. Technology changes things.
It is perfectly possible to get all the nutrition you need without including meat (although it is more difficult), so from an ethical point of view that argument is void
