Spanish: naranja (fruit) -> anaranjado (color: literally "like orange-fruit")
This might be a regional dialect thing but I've never heard the latter word; I've only ever heard the color naranja.

True, it's quite culture-specific. Then again, rice-colored is more likely to mean "brown" in the US than in Laos. "Sky-colored" does not mean "grey" as British people might think, and "vinegar-colored" doesn't mean "like the diluted acetic acid from Walmart" either.

Not sure about the historical details, but the article kind of makes it look like a lot of that was due to problems with getting good-quality material 100 years ago, which has been improved upon quite a bit since then.
Whatever the case may be there, it sure looks like this has improved enough that Pepsico found it worthwhile to start using these guys' refrigerators instead of compressor-style. And that's kind of a big endorsement.

Not so much. If you go to a supermarket in the US, you will see rice - which is white due to having the hull, bran layer and germ removed - and brown rice, which is brown due to being a whole grain rice.

@abarker I don't think anyone is disputing the difference between white and brown rice. I think his point was (:shoulder_aliens:) that whole grain brown rice is more common in the US than it is in Laos.
I think this is probably true; nevertheless, white rice is far more common than brown rice, even in the US, and if you ask Americans what color rice is, the vast majority will say white.

@MrL Practically, because it's the way the Constitution says it must be done. Amending the Constitution is a difficult process, and I don't think there is sufficient political unity in the country now, nor in the foreseeable future, to ratify an amendment. You can be reasonably certain some states will oppose it because the Electoral College gives them more prominence in national politics. Voting to abolish it would be voting to diminish their own political power, which is something politicians tend to avoid. Some small swing states would practically cease to exist politically without the electoral votes they control.
But the distribution of electoral votes wouldn’t change. Each state still has the same amount of votes, just that the votes go directly to the presidential candidate instead of the elector who is required to vote for that candidate.
(Hypothetically. Since the court decided this is not the case, it does make a difference. But if the electors didn’t have any choice of their own, they’d be useless middle men.)

Having electors could actually serve a purpose if the one that has been elected by the people is a litteral Stalin, and is murdering people all over the place. Then the electors can go "Naaah, fuck it, I aint picking that dude."
This also holds true for less silly cases....so in other words, exactly what happened in the incident that precipitated this conversation?

I'm of the opinion that the Danes should have offered to swap (on a non-monetary basis) Greenland for Florida and the Gulf Coast. That would have been quite the victory for Trump to tweet about, as everyone can see how much larger Greenland is on the map, and figure out how many golf courses would fit there (the clue is in the name: Greenland)...
-
@dkf The Danes wouldn't have dared. After all, Trump might have said yes, and then they'd be stuck with it.
-
@PleegWat I can't begin to imagine the fight getting such a swap through Congress.
