@dcon
So, my original question standsDSL has always been a pretty dodgy Internet technology, moreso now that it's on top of a telephony infrastructure that is borderline-deprecated. DOCSIS (cable Internet) has had several technology upgrades to keep it competitive with fiber, though it may soon get into the same quasi-deprecated state (if/when Netflix puts the Pay TV business model in a state where it can't be used to cross-subsidize cable Internet), but ADSL/VDSL basically hasn't changed in 10+ years.
If AT&T's actual Fiber Internet service is available, change to that, and you'll get much better service. The eyewash about "a mix of FTTN and FTTP" in U-Verse is absolute horsecrap... U-Verse is Fiber to the Central Office and then bog standard DSL from there.
Otherwise, I'd be giving AT&T their walking papers in favor of any other Coax or Fiber provider available.

Residential internet connections go down pretty routinely.
Mine has had an uptime of 99.9982 percent for the past three years (according to my records). though, being at the literal end of the line meant it took a lot of effort to fix the line so this was so.

Yeah, CenturyLink isn't that.

You must be lucky to live somewhere where the cables are all buried and they rarely ever have to do construction.
Nope! Overhead lines! I could even point out which one is for power and which is the Internet!

LOL. I have AT&T uVerse. Seems every couple weeks/months the system randomly breaks. Last one was 3 outages (of about 1 minute) within one hour. And I'm in Silly Valley.
Yeah worry. Too bad you never talked to me, I was tier 1 support for a few years. Have the scripts gotten any better?
-
@Tsaukpaetra I guess you're just lucky. But it's irrelevant, really. Even if they could guarantee 4-5 9s of uptime, they still wouldn't. Not for a residential internet connection, at least. People who need guaranteed uptime have to pay for it, because really, they're paying to be the first priority the moment anything goes wrong.
-
@izzion My choices are Comcast, AT&T, and other providers that use AT&T. Fiber to the house is not available. We don't all live in (affluent) Palo Alto.
-
@brie said in In other news today...:
@pie_flavor We're talking about someone who legitimately needs to be monitored 24/7. They're nearly to the point where they need to be in a 24/7 care facility, but just not quite yet. They're coming to the stage of life that Medicare was designed for.
If money is no object why not just have rotating shifts of butlers? An oven mitt was designed to handle high temperatures; that does not mean you should stick it in molten iron.

And that's not expensive or anything--EMTs only bill small amounts, especially for non-emergency calls...</sarc>
Not nearly as expensive as the damage they will pay when the customer died because he couldn't reach 911 when he needed it
Does 911 even work on a SIP line? It should work, but FCC.gov's Consumer Guide for VoIP and 911 Service doesn't seem to instill much confidence...
Even if it does work, I doubt you could hold them liable if it failed when it was needed. There's probably something in your service contract to cover exactly that.
-
@anotherusername
It works when it feels like working, and you sign an E-911 waiver with your contract that effectively says your 911 is best effort and if it doesn't work, well that was a risk you chose to take.Edit: That said, your SIP phone provider is going to do their damndest to make sure it works in almost all situations (barring your Internet/phone service being completely out). They're still potentially subject to The Displeasure Of The FCC with many many zeroes attached if their E911 service doesn't work reliably under normal conditions.
-
@izzion said in In other news today...:

Redirecting all your internet traffic to an ad page is NOT what I call "best effort"
-
@TimeBandit
Ah, but you don't speak "Government" or "Bureaucrat" (pardon the repetition)
-
@dcon
Well, win-win, if you switch to Comcast, you'll still have a reason for the catharsis of complaining about your ISP (their shitty customer service), but it'll be Coax so won't go down as much as the DSL and you won't have reason to call supportMore seriously, though, my condolences on your Internet situation.

Nothing in the article about correcting for confounding factors like links between ethnicities that live longer on average and cultures that include libation.
Also nothing about other antioxidants than ellagic acid having exactly the same benefits as ellagic acid.

@djls45 Thereâs no need to read the article. Thereâs about 90 trillion contradicting studies showing that drinking a cup of coffee / glass of wine / whatever a day is either healthy or unhealthy, whichever you prefer to hear.

The mezcal worm ain't worth much either, really. Pickled organics taste like, nothing soaked in alcohol - okay. And now you have eaten a worm. Fine. For no particular reason. The mezcal itself, is pretty alright.

"He sat on a step, took from his satchel a bottle of that Olâ Janx Spirit and a towel. He opened the bottle and wiped the top of it with the towel, which had the opposite effect to the one intended, in that the Olâ Janx Spirit instantly killed off millions of the germs which had been slowly building up quite a complex and enlightened civilization on the smellier patches of the towel."

The other major effect might be in reducing the impact of chronic stress. That would do a lot to improve the health of many people.

@Gribnit When I went to Stockholm recently my sister ordered a glass of plum sake to go with the dessert and it happened to be the last of the bottle. Afterwards we got offered to taste the plums that had been soaking at the bottom of the bottle. They were all shrivelled up and tasted very strongly, probably having a very high alcohol content. Would not recommend.

Rachel Barton said she often walks past the âdistressing sightâ.
Stop looking up? Find a different route?

From the comments:
Just over the road from there is a shop with a cupboard in it that is fully [sic] of dead birds that seem to have become trapped in plastic and suffocated to death after having all thier [sic] feathers removed.
They're trying to sell them, it's disgusting.

To discourage birds from shitting everywhere on it. It's a common thing in the UK, hence the omission of the 'why.'
Such things have been in the news recently for exactly this sort of reason.
