This is quite annoying.

So after Windows 10 did it automatic update last night, my laptop's touchpad no longer works. The driver's still installed, the hardware's all "working correctly", but there's no pointer on the screen to move. It's like Windows no longer realizes that its a mouse? Or something?
Fortunately, this laptop has a touchscreen so it's not too difficult to use, but. Still. Annoying headache and something that, if it had happened to my parents or someone less technical, they'd have absolutely no idea how to fix it. In fact, I'm not sure if a driver reinstall will fix it, considering the driver is installed and working now...
EDIT: Not related to Windows 10 update; I accidentally hit the key combo that disables the trackpad on my laptop.
-
And... reinstalling the driver didn't fix it. So. Hm.
-
Crappy open source shit. No quality control what-so-ever.
Oh wait...
-
Do USB mice work?
-
I havent had that issue on 10, but i did see it, or something similar, on 8.1.
I fixed that one by just plugging in an external mouse. that caused the mouse pointer to reappear and the trackpad worked just fine after that, even after i unplugged the mouse again.
Maybe that will fix it in 10 too?
You might also check the charms bar and see if the laptop slipped into tablet mode. That's available if you have a touch screen and does some odd things if you're not expecting it.
or, since this is side bar instead of general help you can yell at me for trying to help. Catharsis can be a powerful thing.

wow, rude

USB mouse doesn't fit how I use this laptop at all (60% in bed, 40% on a public bus) so that doesn't help me.
again
THAT is interesting, I could pull out an old USB mouse and try that.
tablet
It's not in tablet mode.

addendum: If anybody clicks that link wrong, it'll probably break
addendum2: Aaaaaand it broke. oh well!

Open source being crappy is not mutually-exclusive with Microsoft being crappy.
The fact is, all software is crappy.
Open source is still more crappy on average.
-

it's worth a shot.
An option if it needs to have the mouse attached is you could get one of those logitech unifying receivers, those (used to at least. not sure about the current generation) present as a keyboard/mouse even if no device is connected.
You'd lose the USB port, but if your general use case is mobile (on the bus as you say) that might not be a big issue.
It's not in tablet mode.
well there goes that idea down the drain.

My wireless mouse is a MS Arc, I dunno if it works the same way. Or if it even has batteries anymore, I haven't used it in ages.
-
My wireless mouse is a MS Arc, I dunno if it works the same way.
it probably does, if for no other reason than it's better user experience when the user turns on the mouse/keyboard while the receiver is already plugged in. it takes less time for the receiver to pair and start issuing HID events than it does for windows to set up a new HID device.
-
Plugging in the mouse makes a cursor appear, but the trackpad has no influence over it. When I unplug the USB mouse the cursor goes away again.
-
That's... odd
It didn't disable itself did it? Most laptops have a Fn keyboard shortcut, it may have either been pressed accidentally or it just chose to disable it randomly.
-

Blakey blaming Microsoft for shitty touchpad drivers? Is the world coming to an end?
Anyway, I've read somewhere that some laptop have a Fn combination that disables the pointer or something. Might also be worth it to enable the "show pointer location on Ctrl" thing - at least you'll know whether it's some graphical glitch that causes the pointer not to render, or is the touchpad totally unresponsive.
-
Open source is still more crappy on average.
My laptop's touchpad is still working fine after applying 2 years worth of updates to Linux Mint.
But don't change your belief, MS needs all the beta testers they can get

Shimata!
hmm.... a thought occurs. A lot of laptops have a function key that toggles trackpad between disabled/enabled.... maybe that got flipped in software when the new driver dropped?
/me is grasping at straws here.
EDIT: 'd by @sloosecannon

That driver is WHQL approved, so nobody can be blamed except MS.But yeah, the world is probably coming to an end.

Since you are a Windows user, this is probably the first thing you tried but just in case, did you try rebooting ?
-
Yes.

Right; but on my laptop sleep-mode works.

Winner winner chicken dinner.
My laptop has the "disable trackpad" key as Fn-T.
My password starts with T.
The Fn key is right next to the left shift key.
I logged on while groggy as hell.
I'm kind of amazed this has never happened before.
So it's Acer's fault, for putting on a stupid key that disables the track pad I can't imagine anybody actually asked for.
-

Weirdly enough, on my old Acer TimeLineX, the disable touchpad button was Fn + some function key - which is a lot less likely to accidentally be hit.
Seems like Acer really went to shit in the four years that passed.
-
My Aspire S7 doesn't even have function keys. (Or rather, you use the Fn key to access them.)
And it's the best PC hardware I've bought in my life. I'd definitely buy Acer again.
-
I actually do use it, because I use the trackpad when I need to but turn it off when I'm typing a lot because palms on touchpad, but on all the laptops I've used it's one of the F-keys (thus it's pretty hard to hit accidentally). Having it be Fn+T is stupid...
And I didn't even read @aliceif's post which basically said the same thing.
My Aspire S7 doesn't even have function keys.
?Tiny keyboard or something?
And it's the best PC hardware I've bought in my life. I'd definitely buy Acer again.
Yeah, Acer isn't bad. I've switched back and forth between Acer and Lenovo, haven't really had problems with either.
-
So, IOW.
The previous posts that tried to point out that Microsoft makes mistakes as a way to show blakey was wrong....
were wrong...
In fact, it was the user-keyboard interface.
And it's terribly hard to come by new drivers for that interface.
I'm still stuck on fatfingers 2.0
-
Just turn on the "disable trackpad while typing" option. It's in the driver.
Disabling the physical hardware with a physical switch is stupid.
-
-
In fact, it was the user-keyboard interface.
Well, yes, but it's an issue that could have been avoided if it was more obvious the trackpad was disabled; sometimes, a little icon in theSystem TrayNotification Area isn't enough.
-
Tiny keyboard or something?
Do you have some disability that prevents you from looking up Acer S7 on Google Image Search? It's not like it's some closely-guarded military secret.

GIS blocked on school wifi because raisins and I don't feel like network-hopping

The icon didn't indicate it was off. Probably because it was off in hardware (which I assume means the firmware virtually unplugs the internal PS/2 port it uses for the trackpad.) PS/2 doesn't have any kind of handshaking or anything, so the PC has no way of knowing whether it's plugged in and giving no input or unplugged.
Acer using PS/2 hardware in 2011 when this thing was built is something of a WTF, but not a huge one.
-
-
I have the 13.3" one.
Great laptop.
Much slicker than a MacBook Air, which is what I had previously. (More plastic, though, so not as tough-- but thinner and much lighter.)

;)
That's... huh.
Interesting.Looks like a sweet laptop though. The missing F-keys look like the only annoying thing...
-
I never use function keys. F5 once a day, max.
-
I bought this one back in 2011:
http://www.chip.pl/images/testy/notebooki/notebooki-z-windows-7/acer-aspire-timelinex-5830tg/54325.jpg
Really liked it a lot.
-
Yeah... I use them a little more frequently cause I try to use the keyboard if I can.
I bought this one back in 2011:
Really liked it a lot.I had one of those! Or a similar one with an AMD proc in it. It died pretty quickly though. I've got from that to an Aspire... M9 (?)... now I'm using a Lenovo Edge 15 which isn't too bad.
-
Right; but on my laptop sleep-mode works.
I use it everyday on mine. What's your point ?
-
My sister has this weird Toshiba laptop where the F1-F12 keys have alternative functions such as disable touchpad, volume up-down etc., but for some reason those are the default and you have to hold Fn to access the normal functions! So much for quick browser tab management.

BIOS/UEFI can usually fix that. Still stupid.
-
On my dhromebook, the F1-F12 keys are labelled 1234567890-=
You have to hold to make them do the F-key thing.
Also, there's a row of keys above those that are labelled: esc [insert icon for fullscreen] [insert icon for switch window] [insert icon for reduce brightness] [insert icon for increase brightness]
-
Usually there's a light indicator on the laptop keyboard to indicate this.
-
All this angst over FUNCTION key press.
If it's causing that much confusion with Ctrl or Alt, how about you put it up there with the function keys, so you won't press it by mistake.
Long holding for function keystrokes.... really?!?!?
-
Long holding for function keystrokes.... really?!?!?
No, dhromebooks have a key instead of caps lock. You can get caps lock using right alt + .
-
My laptop (from like 2008) has a little indent on the trackpad that can be double tapped to enable/disable it, as well as an indicator light right damn there to let you know. In fact my other laptop also has an indicator light. acer?
ust turn on the "disable trackpad while typing" option.
That option made playing minecraft without a seperate mouse impossible, as using wsad disabled the trackpad. Of course, playing minecraft with a trackpad sucks sooo...reason those are the default
Check the BIOS, mine allows you to toggle whether they or the normal function keys are default

Hey, I love it for the two hours it takes to get setup in a new world and then immediately get bored and quit and delete the world just like the last forty-seven times I've booted it up.
