Almost nothing is new in Windows 10’s 21H1 update
It works for Apple.

I talked to the admin today about the changes to my work schedule and she said she’d send me a copy of the preliminary schedule for autumn once she was home, as the scheduling software only works in IE and she uses a MacBook at work. Maybe tomorrow I could suggest trying user agent spoofing to bypass the restriction.

Good luck with that. Most webapps that "only work in IE" are using ActiveX or VBScript or some combination thereof.

Script kiddies hate this one trick!

Or IE specific Javascript.

@error Wouldn't surprise me considering the, um, quality of the web-based tools I use. Like the JSP abomination I use for reporting.

I haven't looked at this in any detail but it looks very
apt
-like to me:Now we get to see if the fanbois were right that this will be a major antitrust thing. Which never made sense, of course. But hopefully it's the start of the end of everyone putting in custom updater code.

@boomzilla The freedom to innovate

@TimeBandit honestly, no one wanted them to innovate in this space. Just play some catch up and join the modern world.

Now, if they could fix the mess that is Windows Update, that would be really nice.
-
@TimeBandit it does seem like they have the potential start of that. Assuming WinGet isn't as much a pile of as Windows Update is.

Before you update with this month’s patch batch, please make sure you have backed up your system and/or important files. It’s not uncommon for Windows updates to hose one’s system or prevent it from booting properly, and some updates even have been known to erase or corrupt files.

That was actually my first guess, with some interpolation based on what I know of you and the hardware you run.

Anyways, one VM reinstall later and I got the OpenZFS test package installed and running.
And created a a pool on a USB Zip disk for shits and giggles.
Not sure why Windows says it's an NTFS system, it most definitely is not, but that's probably just cosmetic...

Back to Win10... Looks like 21H1 is rolling out. One of my computers was just infected. The others say "nah, you're up-to-date".
Mine keeps telling me corporate policy is installing 20H2... but it fails every time and nothing happens.
Filed under: Error code 0x87D00664 apparently just means it ran out of time... but it had hours to do what it was doing.
Having failed daily every day since posting this, today the update succeeded.

Grr...
Visually, the biggest changes you’ll notice can be found along the taskbar. Microsoft has centered the app icons here, cleaned up the tray area, and included a new Start button and menu.
It's not just the app icons. It also appears to move the start button. Why would you do that?

Windows 11 also includes new snap controls that you can access from the maximize button on all apps.
But let me guess, still no easy way to set "keep on top" on a window?

A centered start button suggests they don't have any designers left who understand Fitt's law

Also, it finally looks like a “modern” OS like macOS or the chrome stuff (not saying good, just modern in the desktop == phone sense).
Probably won’t look like that in the end anyway. One click and you’re back to the windows 95 dialogs that are still not resizable.
