@Luhmann Found a way to view PDF's with Microsoft Edge Legacy! Just run Windows Sandbox. In this VM there is still Edge Legacy available. This will work till April 13, 2021. After that day, it is gone for good when applying the latest update (or at least, they say so).
Details are at:

@littletijn
This worked for me: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/144061-enable-microsoft-edge-side-side-browser-experience-windows-10-a.html

Schrödinger's app updates.

If Schrödinger and the other guys were alive nowadays, I wonder what they'd think of Windows 10's behavior.

@Zecc
He would be confused how we are stuffing so much wrong inputs into this tiny box
-
@Luhmann And assuming the answers are right.

@HardwareGeek
Even more confusion when some answers actually are correct

Something weird has been happening with my son's computer's wifi. It happened a couple of weeks ago and then again this past weekend. His wifi would stop working. Ultimately, when I'd opened up the device properties the "Diagnose" button actually worked. Both times it said that DHCP had been disabled for wifi.
Not what TFA is talking about, but weird.

That looks like it might be actually helpful and covers a few options.

....checking....
All the stuff they recommended (aside from the firewall thing) was already set.
Interestingly DHCP was off for Wireless #2, but on for #1 and for the "Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi" which is actually being used. The service is running and everything. Very odd. Hopefully I'll remember the magic incantation the next time Windows decides against using DHCP.
-
That's nice. There are updates available. And no buttons.
(Actually, I had just clicked the 'optional updates / drivers' - so it's actually downloading / installing those. I think.)

Windows Status: Windows demanded to install updates on my mom’s computer. No idea which, maybe the latest one in their Halloween H20 version scheme, maybe some older one.
Anyways, it’s been running for an hour now and says 30%, this can take a moment, do not turn off your computer. Bitch, would you hurry up then? I’d like for this to finish before having to go to bed.

@topspin on Saturday I was playing Civ 6 with my wife and daughter. My wife had put out a post on Facebook asking if any friends wanted to play, too. One responded, but he was having problems because his computer was trying to use the displaylink graphics instead of whatever graphics card he had. Then Windows decided it needed to update. That actually took about 4 hours to finish.
Eventually he got the graphics thing straightened out but by that point we were ready to go to bed.

Tsaukpaetra's Shop for Relevatives' PC Repair is now in session! The subject of today: A Lenovo Ideapad 330.
First step: Turn it on. Apparently it has managed to not have Windows Updated, because it has been 20 minutes so far and Windows Update is at 3%.
It clearly has spinning rust backing it, which is probably most of the problem complaint: It's too slow.
We'll see...
-
Status: Windows refuses to install touchpad drivers because it wants to Feature Upgrade instead.
It's great that they got rid of the ability to cherry-pick updates.
I guess I'm just going to have to l33t myself around Windows on the keyboard only....
-
@Tsaukpaetra Mousekeys is still a thing....

It is, and I've done it, but it's a lot less impressive.
Besides, it lets me make fun of how fucking terrible people didn't set the tab order in their apps!

That's on purpose, so that if the screen goes blank because it doesn't support the new resolution, you can get back to a working resolution by pressing Enter.

Nah. I'm not doing anything that really actually requires a lot of mousing. Mostly watching the defragger slowly count from 0 to 1 percent every few minute.

No, I mean, navigate to the Settings app. Select any category. Select anything that will cause the screen to change (i.e. Windows Update), find your cursor on the "Back" not-a-button (you can't tell because there is no cursor or other positional indicator, but it's there!).
I can only assume it's been fixed in later versions of Windows.

That'll be making the system checkpoint (or whatever it's called). It takes for…ev…er for some reason, especially on an HDD.

Offered to replace the rust (1tb, using only 63 GB) with a cheap Crucial SSD (240 GB).
They're going for it. Cloning now. Should take, what, half an hour to transfer 63 GB off the spinning rust?

Discovered that for some reason my drive was in MBR mode. And that there's apparently a utility to switch it to GPT*. That... worked?
Microsoft, don't you dare try getting in my good graces...
*With several caveats

Let's say that if it gets fixed, they'll also introduce a new bug to keep it zero sum.

Messing with the Settings app just now: it defaults to the search box after using the arrow keys and Enter to select any of the Settings pages. (This machine has 20H2.)
Also, Microsoft has decided it's again time to try to convince me to set ChrEdge as my default browser.
-
@Parody said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
ChrEdge
How do you pronounce that? "Cringe"?
-
@Zerosquare
Crap?
-
@Zerosquare Chr (like Chrome) - Edge (like Edge). krej? krɛdʒ?

After it had finally booted up and I thought you can log in, it said (translated from memory):
HELLO
We have some updates for you
These updates help keep you protected in your internet experience
Please do not turn off your PC
This may take a while
What the fuck did you just do earlier, then?!
Luckily though, it didn't reboot and start all over again, but just went to the Desktop after more waiting.Then it opened Edge or ChrEdge or whatever-the-fuck non-default non-Firefox browser, showing me some MSN site to learn about "new features" (I didn't even read it because otherwise my eyes would get infected with a free OneDrive subscription or something) and asked me if I want to keep every site translated from English to German.
Listen buddy. First, don't shove this browser of yours in my face again. Second, don't ever serve some stupid machine-translated garbage to me. In the time I had to wait for your stupid updates to install, you could have had one of your millions of employees write that "what's new" site in German.

“Don't show this page again until I next do an update. Got it!”

I'm starting to think I should block HTTP(S) queries with "Edge" in the use-agent string in my firewall.
...I wonder if there's an option for that already, since they all MITM browser traffic anyway.

My son is getting ready for a new school day. First class starts in 10 minutes. So you know what happened next...
Time to update!
-
@acrow Microsoft's ahead of you on that one. They use
Edg/
now.
-
@topspin The first word is "Hi." instead of "HELLO", (super casual for friendliness) but otherwise spot on. The stuff it was doing before was system-wide setup (new kernel, installing CrEdge, etc) and the stuff during those screens was per-user setup (installing Candy Crush Soda Saga, re-arming all the nags about file associations, etc).
