WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

Mind you, it's not just Microsoft that are guilty of this sort of nonsense. OK, I get that Joe Public will tend to dismiss anything more detailed as "some garbage junk message", but that's not a reason to hide it from people who are smarter than the bare minimum necessary to eat, breathe, drink, shit, piss and fuck.
Sorry. I get annoyed sometimes, especially by opaque error messages that refuse to give me useful information.I can only upvote once, so here's a follow-up post demonstrating extra appreciation.

So. 0x80070005. It's just an error code, and in context it means little more than "something went wrong". I'd actually prefer that if they don't want to offer more detailed information, they just bite the bullet and say, "Something went wrong but we think you're almost too stupid to be able to breathe, so we're not going to offer any details."
If Microsoft was honest:

Yeah. Stop fucking teasing me and just do it! (New machine, so it just applied a very large set of patches a couple days ago)

That's the one I'm seeing on my main machine (formerly on compatibility hold). Well, OK, the version of that that's written in French, but... And yeah, just Do What It Takes!

MS seems to have a "thing" now about doing multiple major updates in a row. Damn it! It's a new machine - apply EVERYTHING. Don't make me wait a arbitrary length of time - or force me to use some Yes-I-know-what-I-fucking-want tool.

I was tempted but think I'll wait til this is fixed.

The old i5 that still has its original GT430 got offered 2004, but it failed to install for 0x80070005, which means approximately "something went wrong". I'll come back to this in a moment, because it's a major ..
OK, I tried again this afternoon, and it's currently rebooting again while applying the update, as opposed to previously where it footled around with the Windows Update panel open and then gave up. 86% and counting.
More or less exactly nothing changed in-between.

So they made 2004 official after all.

@Gąska Months ago, yeah.

FWIW: I updated my main computer to 2004/May 2020/etc. a few days ago when Microsoft decided it was OK to do so. (Presumably they fixed that gaming thing.) No problems so far; my files are where I left them.
My tablet updated as well without any delay.

From what I've been able to gather, 0x80070005 translates as "something went wrong but we have no fucking clue just what any more than you do. But look! It's technical!"

I'm pretty sure I was told no earlier than in May that Microsoft is hell-bent on never using 2004 in anything official and that it's May 2020 only.
-
@Watson It literally means
STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
. Which could be a permissions problem. Or a "something's holding this open and doesn't want to share" problem. Or an incorrect variation of "operation not supported" (since it was DOS' catch-all error code, it became Windows' catch-all error code, and now Windows NT's catch-all error code). Or, well, anything. It would help to know what specifically access was denied to, but surfacing that information is just an invitation to deleteSystem32
.

Perhaps; "Microsoft" has been all over the place when naming the Windows 10 updates. I've been seeing the same version/update name variants we'd been seeing at least as far back as November, though: 2004, 20H1, (Month) 2020 Update.
It could be worse; we could be looking at Windows 10 Series X.

Got tired of waiting and decided to force it with the assistant.
Downloaded, started install. About 75% of the way in: "LOL! Nope! You can't do it. Your settings are incompatible." No idea what is incompatible. But the Dell XPS 8930 won't update from 1909. (And Dell's update utility says all is up-to-date.)

I don't get it. Are you that impatient to experience the brand new bugs in Windows?
-
Status: Oh, since turning on IPv6, Windows can find the WSUS server again for the first time in months!
Some updates are available!
Things I note:
- Lots of updates for Office. I honestly don't remember why I have it installed on my PC, should just stuff it in a VM or something... Actually, I don't think I even have most of those installed.
- Adobe Flash is STILL being updated? What the shit?!?
Whatever. Time to get up to date, I guess, and finally get rid of the "Your device is missing important security and quality fixes. Last checked Today. No updates available" message.

System, though it does a lot more things than just the system information they talk about in the article.
Microsoft's been talking about moving Control Panel stuff into Settings for years but there obviously isn't a major effort to do it or to get third parties to redo theirs as Settings panels. One might think they'd want to get that done to help Windows
RT10 Sin S Modeon ARM but who knows?

Sorry, you were -ed by @Tsaukpaetra. Better luck next time!
I wonder how many things are going to be removed from Control Panel and never added to Settings. (Because if you think MS won't use this as an excuse to drop stuff they're too to support, I've got a great bridge to sell.)

More seriously though, reducing the amount of places to find settings is an improvement.

I was on 1903, and then I updated all the way to 2004 yesterday. The new animation for the start menu is nice, as is it no longer refusing to run literally any UWP app with a permission error including Windows Terminal.
-
@Parody What do you mean there isn't a major effort? Every update there's a ton more that's been migrated.

It's been more than 10 years since they started developing Windows 8. If they wanted to move or deprecate and hide/remove everything that isn't third-party they could have by now.
There have been multiple theys, though, and that's part of why this remains unfinished, probably will never be finished, and may not even need to be finished at this point. :/

They use a Machine Learning™ algorithm to determine which computers are ready to handle their updates. The answer to which is "not many because our updates are all garbage".
It's consistent with their Windows-as-a-service philosophy of "shhh just don't think about what's going on... go do something else and we'll make sure your files are right where you left them".

From the panicky article above:
Currently, Windows 10 users can access hardware information about their PC in several places, but the main ways are: Control Panel > System and Security > System, and Settings > System > About, or by typing ‘system information’ into the search bar.
Am I the only one who uses +Pause?

I would say probably Yes. I didn't even know that +Pause was a thing, let alone a thing that would bring up Control Panel --> System
In fact, I had to look at my keyboard because my initial thought was "WTF is Pause"?
It's been so long since I used it or even thought about it, I completely forgot that Pause existed.
