When I asked you what other organizations are possible besides tree I meant in practice, not theoretically.
I.e. the least interesting and most useless question imaginable because there is an obvious answer that nothing except the current mainstream is ever possible because of backward compatibility.

Not rhetorically, when the "obvious" answer is being disputed.

I can't say whether that's due to Explorer / the Windows API fetching too much information for each object, or just a lack of optimization in NTFS.

despite it being quite possible from a technology point of view and probably very beneficial when it comes to ease of use, there is no effort to create one.

I've ran out of luck with my trick of leaving an open text editor with unsaved text.
Windows found itself with full baterry and me gone for 10 minutes and restarted this morning. This has caused me actual data loss!
Nothing damaging, but it's very annoying
-
@Zecc I have many of my day to day notes in unsaved text docs that my text editor preserves across sessions. But a while ago (a year or two?) it lost all the contents for some reason and the only things preserved were the files I had actually saved.
-
@Zecc said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

I had something similar. I had Notepad open with some notes, unsaved. Went off to do something else.
Now, due to I never bothered changing the energy saving setting from the default hibernate-after-30-mins. I had however disabled hibernation on the computer completely, as it's a desktop and don't need that stuff. So what happens after 30 mins? The computer shuts down. And having a program with unsaved text did nothing to stop it.

Bullshit. No way it was able to shut down and restart in that amount of time.
OH MY GOD WHY WON'T IT JUST SHUT DOWN!?!?!?!
Seriously...been spinning on "Shutting down" for at least 10 minutes now.

@boomzilla fuck that shit. I got places to be.

Oh, it didn't restart right away. Instead it looked like it was completely off (screen off, power light off) but it also wouldn't react to me pressing the power button. It left me wondering whether it had lost all its battery.
I left it alone for some time because I had better things to do at the time, but when I got back with the power cord I tried turning it on again before plugging it in "just in case", and it turned on normally. It still had something like 80% battery.

Yeah....but it might have actually shut down before the clock ticked over. I wasn't exactly sitting there staring at it and holding a stopwatch. But I definitely did notice that it was still running at one point at 4:03.
Still. Beat the hell out of yesterday when it hadn't finished in over 20 minutes so I force shut it down.

Apparently I forgot to shut down my machine on Friday afternoon. Seems that it went to sleep or hibernate or something (I'm sure some could come up with the right word) because the disk encryption prompt was up when I powered up. I figured updates must have happened and there was a restart.
Nope, after getting through that my VM was still open, etc. And of course everything was running like ass, so I figured I'd better restart. 15 minutes later I'm force shutting down the machine again.

That is widely overrated. Embrace your inner socialist and rejoice at the fact that your employer can use you for less profit!

Currently I do, but I keep Don Quixote:ing the red tape and incompetency.
I've worked plenty in blue collar jobs, and there is plenty of doing as little as you can get away with to counter your employer making money off of you. I seriously can not understand the reasoning, but I've heard and seen it plenty of times.

Employees are happy because they're not stressed out by the job. Low-level management is happy because during those few hours a day the employees aren't procrastinating, they're being very productive. High-level management is happy because from their perspective it looks like employees are working hard the entire time. Win-win.
The 6 hour workday movement is less about reducing every employee's workload and more about dropping the charade and admitting it's already happening anyway.

It would be great if they did, but it's pretty clear for the most part it's not what's about to happen. I mean, does anything that's currently happening, anything at all weigh in favor of that?

Just installed update 1909 and it seems to have broken my custom mouse settings and Logitech G-hub. G-hub just sits there forever playing its splash screen animation.

I did a fresh install of 1909 on my desktop on friday. After that Ksaspersky anti-virus failed to install. No error code. And their support forum looked kinda exactly the same. Oh, except they got the first poster to send system logs, and told them to sit tight while they examine the issue. That was a month ago.
The installation CD that came with the W10 license had "2017" on it, so I just downloaded the latest disk image from Microsoft. This may have been a grand mistake. Did I accidentally sign up for even more beta testing?
I'm also getting a constant nag from Nvidia driver, since I don't have their Control Panel installed. But since I don't know which type of driver I have, I'm not going to risk installing the panel. And I haven't exposed the machine to any Microsoft accounts yet, so presumably I get no store access.
...Internet says I can disable an Nvidia service to get rid of the nag. I might try that.

P.S. I really don't know whether 1909 is till beta or not. Why would Microsoft offer a beta distro when someone comes to ask for an installation media?

Probably the most effective resolution is to try reinstalling again. Because, yes, Windows is insane and you need to apply insane logic to get it to work properly.

Let's see if I understood this right. To fix the anti-virus not installing right, I should nuke, pave, and re-install Windows. Because it presumably installed itself wrong.
Do I use the same 1909 .iso, or should I download a fresh one, or should I start hunting around file-sharing sites for a known good copy?

Can always SHA it. I do believe Microsoft provides those for verification.
